As far as we can see, our book is lust as symbolic in meaning as any previous one of its kind. The only modification is that our yearbook is stripped of embellishments, but we Seniors consider this only a meager sacrifice as compared to that which our boys in service must makeg thus we have no apologies to offers lt is our book, and we are happy to present it to you, We intended it to be simple in manner, patriotic in tone, and unique in style, It represents lust us. Our endeavor is for you to grasp our lite here for six years in our beloved school among dear friends and dear teachers. And now as all Seniors must do, we have to depart, but it is indeed with poignant regret that we take leave of you. May the ties which we have formed here together linger on through the year as a true emblem of comradeshipt It is our hope that in the years to come, when you turn the leaves between these two covers, this product of our work may be a key to many pleasant hours of con- solation and happiness to you. As you have developed to maturity, I have seen you acquire initiative, self-reliance, dependability, tolerance, and an intelligent curiosity of the world about you-all necessary attributes of a freedom-loving people Lowell has said, True scholarship consists in knowing not what things exist, but what they mean, it is not memory but judgment, Your faculty has endeavored to teach you to interpret, to evaluate, and to formulate opintons upon the knowledge gained here, As you stand, eager and expectant, upon the threshold of a new career, you are prepared to face the realities of life, Meet them resolutely, for upon you rests the democracy of tomorrow. Among these were four members of last year's Junior Class: Ralph l-lardgrove, Joe Sterling, Daniel Fulmer, and Larry Sisson, Good luck to you and to those Seniors who left during the year You have gone to war in order that we may finish our education and live in peace We are deeply grateful to you. Class officers were elected at the first meet- ing, At a later meeting, the class, after much controversy, decided upon a blue Norwegian seal cover for the yearbook. Joyful over a called meeting at English period, we discussed, examined, and finally chose our calling cards and invitations, Even then, we were mindful that many hurdles must yet be crossed ere the great day had arrived. On November 22, l943, it must have seem- ed to underclassmen that Seniors were having a dress parade, the boys wore their best suits tincluding tiesl and the girls had the latest in hair-does. You have guessed it! Young and Carl had come to photograph them. Steve Wrenn and Mary Lou Sowder were selected as the Beau and the Belle of Simon Kenton. Following tradition, each year the most popular girl and boy are chosen from the Senior Class by the entire Senior High School for these coveted honors We regret that three of our classmates Wayne Perry, Jack Snape and Ray Violett left us to loin the ranks of fighting forces upon the sea Our loss is Uncle Sai-n's goin. December - january - February The lonq waited for Christmas vacation came at last, The students, in a state of hilarity and joviality, left Simon Kenton December 24, I943, not to return until January 3, l944, the beginning of a new year of opportunities. A short time after the lengthy vocation was terminated, glamorous facsimiles of our seniors began pouring into Simon Kenton accompanied by much admiration from fellow classemen. These portraits found their way into the gloss show case in the hall to be approved by a greater number of people. The eventful and traditional senior class play was selected by Miss Shely, the director, and competitive try-outs were held. After some consideration, Miss Shely chose the characters and began extensive work on it The first play practice was held on January 6, and frequent rehearsals were held thereafter The Madison Avenue Bowling Alley was the scene of much sport on January 22, This bowling party was sponsored by the Seniors for the school The alleys were reserved solely for Simon Kenton and a good crowd attended for an evening of recreation We all wondered why Mr. Moore was dash- ing about with o topemeasure and yardstick on the morning of January l4. Our questioning glances were soon answered when we got word that we were to be measured for our caps and gowns that day. On January l8, the entire student body had a good excuse for dressing up because that was the day for the Webster Studio to take pictures of all pupils for the '44 Pioneer, Although there were some humorous occur- rences backstage iand on-stage too for that matterl during play practices for the presenta- tion of Adam's Evening, the big night saw a great change in the participants, January 27, l944, the S. K. S auditorium was the stage of an interesting farce with quite an exhibition at talent, P330 Thirty-nlghl YEAR'S REVIEW CContinuedl March - April - May On March 3rd, the 66th District Tournament, Simon Kenton versus Waltan4Verono, was held This was a very special event, Simon Kenton won the victory and an attractive trophy as an award. Mr. Spahr left Simon Kenton for o ministerial position at Cadiz an March 3, On March Sth, Young and Carl visited our school to take schoolroam scenes and campus views. This was an eventful day for the annual staff since they got out of classes to escort the guests about the building . The ninth and tenth of March played an important port in Simon Kenton's basketball records, The worthy Pioneers defeated the Highland Bluebird favorites on the ninth after a thrilling game. The weary Pioneers after such a victory the night before were defeated on the tenth by the Dixie Cardinals. The Pioneers deserve our words of praise for a most success- ful season. On March l7, the Band presented a rip- rooring Black Face Band minstrel which increas- ed band funds considerably. We must admit, however, that some of the members were uni- clcntifioble, Our school was well represented in the district speech festival which was held at Ludlow on March 22 and 23, Our participants received worthy ratings ond some attained a trip to Lexington to participate contest, the right of in the state was also an several solos Kenton were excellent ra- tings, On the eleventh the band received a rating of excellent and received the encourage- ment thot they are on the road up. A. again successfully sponsored o Father and Son Banquet The month of May will be the busiest af the school year for the seniors. Our annual Junior-Senior picinic is scheduled for May 6, at Sharon Woods. This promises to be very en- tertaining, Two members of the Senior class will take part in the All Kentucky Chorus to be held at Lexington on May I3. Then, last of all, come the closing excercises of our mem- orable high school days: Class Night, Baccalau- reate, Honor Day, and Commencement. Now, that we have reached our goal, a feeling of nostalgia tor all we leave behind overwhelms us. You will create o bod impression upon the teachers, take too many Throw paper towels upon the floor of the lavatory. lt solves the unemployment problem. Eat your delicacies in the hall, They are more appetizing there, since it is forbidden. Run to catch the bus at night, lt will save Mr, Moore's gas, even if it is hard on his tion. Edge your way into lunch line whenever you get an opportunity. lt gives you that dignified appearance. Shriek with laughter at the teachers' jokes. They expect it, Always applaud loudly and long during pay programs. lt may tend to deter classes. Take your time between class periods. lt makes for shorter class recitations. Sightsee as much as possible on the second floor after your lunch hour. Miss Gardiner and Mrs. Gabriel issue passes freely. Write your own absence excuses, This will develop an early talent for fiction writing anrl thus increase your imagination to go and m Furnish your own gum during class. Mrs, Schatzmdn and Miss Shely may not have enough around. Call the teachers by their first names. lt sounds much more informal. Ignore Miss Stephens' long assignments, Shakespeare's dead anyway. Neglect homework as often as possible. All work and no ploy makes Jack a dull boy. Be absent as often as possible. This will give you an excuse for not knowing your lessons ay serve to keep the class from progressing too rapidly. Spill ink in the halls occasionally. That will keep Spurge occupied. Heaven knows how to put ri proper price upon its goods, and it ziroiilrt be 'strange indeed if so celestial an article as FREEDOM shoiilrl not lu- highly rated - Thomas Paine This year Simon Kenton students have con- tributed much toward the war effort on the home front. The regular sale of Defense Stamps and War Bonds has been going on all year. An accurate account of sales made shows that students and teachers have purchased 56,734.25 in bonds and stamps through April 25. Early in the fall pupils collected a quantity of waste paper to relieve the impending paper shortage. The Future Farmers sponsored a scrap drive and the result was a large supply turned in. An Allied Relief campaign for cloth- ing' in the fall, and a Clothes for Russia cam- paign in the spring were most successful. Simon Kenton responded generously to our courageous allies. Rag dolls and scrap books for refugee children were made by various ones in this schoolg likewise, a collection of coat hangers, which sold for two cents each, was undertaken to secure funds for war organizations, A large collection of books and magazines was sent to the Darnell Hospital at Danville. During the year the Commercial Department was respon- sible for typing 3000 blood donor cards. Home Economics classes were engaged a part of the year in making utility bags and blanket robes under the direction of the Red Cross for members of the armed forces. The Home Economics girls also filled Christmas boxes for the service men. Menu cards and Easter place cards for special occasions were made by the mathematics department The some group sponsored a white elephant sale which was an auction of myster- ious boxes and choice delicacies to go to the highest bidders. The proceeds, which reached the height of 57533, went to the Red Cross and along with the sale money went a donation from teachers and pupils amounting to S28 09. A basketball game was sponsored, also for the Red Cross, which totaled 515,88 Thus Simon Kenton's total contribution to the Red Cross was Sl 19.30. The Senior bays and girls enrolled for a course in First Aid offered by Mr, C. A. Taylor. They acquired a wide range of information that will be of vital importance to them and others around them. They went into the course with the serious attitude of giving their best and their diligence was manifested by a rapid pro- gress in the correct methods of giving First Aid. The following of our seniors and teachers becarne blood donors this year: Gilbert Damon, Imogene Mills, Nina Armstrong, Evelyn Smith, Ruby Bell, Maurice Fisk, Edwin Kelly, Beverly Gets, Miss Elma Taylor, Mrs, Lucile Brown, Miss Helen Richardson, and Miss Kathryn Orem. Some of these have made two donations. We are indeed proud of them. Although their conf tribution cannot be measured in terms of money, the amount of blood donated was equivalent to 5525. 1 Page Sixty-three HOME FRONT AT WAR fContinuedl During the latter part of the school year, the Red Cross offered a Home Nursing Course in which several of our teachers, seniors, and patrons participated, A community Cannery project was set up during the summer of IQ43, the results were so promising that it will again be placed at the disposal of the community in l944 under the direction of the Home Economics and the Agriculture Departments. Approximately 60,000 pints of fruits, vegetables, and meats were canned during l9-l3. The cannery has indeed served its purpose during the present crisis, Home Food Production classes for adults have also played a vital part in the war effort. TO The F. F. A. has encouraged fellow class- mates to raise larger gardens. Total produce being raised by members of this organization consists of nineteen acres in vegetables, thirty- three acres of corn, twelve acres of tobacco, twenty-seven hundred sixty chickens, and cows, hogs, sheep, and beef. A large broader house and a plant bed, l2O feet by 9 feet are also accomplishments of the Future Farmers. They realize the importance of food production, These activities show that students and patrons of Simon Kenton are doing much at home to promote o speedy victory and to bring about that day when our boys will return home.,They are truly behind the lines fighters. These members of '44 who have enlisted in the fight for freedom, a salute. Their sacrifice is one of which the Class of '-'lfl proudly boosts.
