Athletics it wir wir Athletics is one of the most effective experiences in the life of a youth. It develops within the participant high standards of sportsmanship. ln the fall of 1944, our class athletic career began. With Coach Robert Harris as our tutor, we boasted the following members of our class as varsity men, football: James Johnson and Rudolph Johnson, basketball: James Ethridge. ln basketball, the varsity won the championship of the Eastern Section and third place in the State Tournament. ln our sophomore year, James Scott, William Williams, John Helm, Wright Blake, and James Ethridge, bore the responsibility of defending the purple and gold on the basketball court. We considered this quite an honor for mere sophomores. This opportunity was brought about when many of the varsity men were called to the service of our country. Again James Johnson and Rudolph Johnson represented us upon the gridiron. James Johnson, Rudolph Johnson, Kenneth Ward, Fred Parks, Thaddeus Ware, Alfred Winston, Eugene Brandon, Rudolph Henderson, Owens Carter, and James Ethridge, were the class football heroes during our junior year. These stalwart knights of the gridiron helped the varsity to establish a sea- sonal record of seven games won and three games lost out of a ten-game schedule. The same boys who represented us on the basketball court dur- ing our sophomore year, continued to represent us in our junior year. This year the varsity again won the championship of the Eastern Section. Our senior year brought us additional football heroes in the persons of Albert Mitchell and Andrew Mosby.
