P0et9s Corner Original Poems From English Department WONDERING Wonder what's in life for me. When I become a man, Will I be known for great deeds, Or will misfortune be my plan? Wonder if l'll play the part To invent, discover, or build, These are thoughts within my heart That someday I hope be full filled. Now I'm eager to become a mon, I often sit and ponder I'm striving hard as I can To avoid Wondering, but I wonder. . . . . Fred Parks THE ROAD OF RIBBON The road was like a ribbon at night Gleaming for miles and miles In the pole moon light. Going on and on to distant lands Giving service to every man. Gleaming like a ribbon in some small child's hair Just roaming on without never a care. The road was bright with a gleam from the moon Making it look like a flower in bloom Shining like a ribbon so tiny and small Giving service to one and all. Going places, doing things, seeing what others may never see. . . . . Fay Davis SNOWFLAKES Like soft wisps of cotton, The snowflakes fell into wintry night, Each tiny crystal glistening In the fading moonlight. Soon the ground was covered With a carpet-like coat of snow. The night became silent, And the wind began to blow. Flurries of snow blew this way and that, Breezes of silver dust. Over the head and under the feet, The beautiful white snow brushed. The snow covered the world And the earth was blessed, For now it seemed like A haven of complete rest. . . . Evelyn Barrett LOVE Without you, it's like the sea without water, lt's like a sky without it's blue, lt's like a home without a family, That's what it's like without you. At night when the stars are shining above, lt is you that I am thinking of. You're in my arms so it seems, But it all ends up to be a dream. When a boy and girl meet with a smile And are greeted with a hug, Then life has begun to be worth-while, lt leads to one thing, and that is love. . . . Levi Burs 25

Class History We began our high school career in the month of September 1944. We were divided into three sections with the enrollment of 103. The sponsors were: Mrs. Bertha J. Washington-section one, Mrs. Elizabeth P. Vaughan-section two, Mrs. Ottrus B. Dickerson--section three. We were represented in the Miss Homecoming by Miss Peggy Watlington who was crowned Miss Simmons . ln our sophomore year which was also an enjoyable one, we were divided into two sections with Mrs. Ottrus B. Dickerson and Mrs. Elizabeth S. Holmes as our sponsors. ln the latter part of the year, we lost one of our sponsors Mrs. Dickerson who resigned and joined the Aracoma Teaching Staff. Mrs. Moselle Giles succeeded her. Arelia Abercrombie, Gloria Day, Veatrice Goard, Daisy Simmons, Reba Watkins, and Rosa Wright came to us as new members. We were represented in the Miss Home- coming Drive by Miss lrene Walker who was an attendant to Miss Sim- mans . One of the gala affairs of the year was sponsored by our class, the St. Patrick Dance. We were also represented on the varsity team by: Wright Blake, James Ethridge, John Helm, James Scott, and William Wil- Iiams. ln our junior year we achieved even greater heights. We were di- vided into two sections under the sponsorship of Mrs. Elizabeth Holmes and Mrs. Bertha J. Washington. We were represented in athletics by: James Ethridge, Alfred Winston, and Rudolph Johnson. Lola White was awarded a prize for being the best ladylike student in the school. Early in September of 1947 our senior year began. We were divided into two sections again with Mrs. Bertha J. Washington and Mrs. Elizabeth Holmes as our sponsors. We were represented in athletics by the same boys. Our contestants for the Pepsi Cola scholarship contest were: Danielle Bowles, Edyth Carter, and Lola White. We were represented in the Miss Homecoming drive by Miss Wanda Steed who was crowned Miss Simmons . ln the month of October 1947 a lovely student, Margaret Campbell, came to our class from Delaware, Ohio. She was active in dramatics, radio and assembly programs. She returned home on account of ill health and passed in December. We sincerely regret her passing. Each year we have won honors in every phase of the school activities and have also carried a high scholastic average. We shall leave Simmons with cherished thoughts of an honorable school. Edyth Carter Mildred McLemore Lola White
