Old world, to you, farewell, we say. Of course, we will remember you When we have gone away. After four long years together Farewell isn't easy to say. But I must say that we are leaving After this commencement day. Farewell to Simmons and teachers And thanks for what you have done. We are grateful for your many deeds, From the largest to the smallest one 'ik il? dir Class Song Tune: Auld Lang Syne By Ruth Helen Biggers O parting time has come for us And we're about to go. Of course we hate to think of leaving, dear Old Simmons High. Dear school we'll ever think of you Where ever we may roam. We'lI always think of Simmons High as the finest school at home Class History We began our high school career in the month of September 1944. We were divided into three sections with the enrollment of 103. The sponsors were: Mrs. Bertha J. Washington-section one, Mrs. Elizabeth P. Vaughan-section two, Mrs. Ottrus B. Dickerson--section three. We were represented in the Miss Homecoming by Miss Peggy Watlington who was crowned Miss Simmons . ln our sophomore year which was also an enjoyable one, we were divided into two sections with Mrs. Ottrus B. Dickerson and Mrs. Elizabeth S. Holmes as our sponsors. ln the latter part of the year, we lost one of our sponsors Mrs. Dickerson who resigned and joined the Aracoma Teaching Staff. Mrs. Moselle Giles succeeded her. Arelia Abercrombie, Gloria Day, Veatrice Goard, Daisy Simmons, Reba Watkins, and Rosa Wright came to us as new members. We were represented in the Miss Home- coming Drive by Miss lrene Walker who was an attendant to Miss Sim- mans . One of the gala affairs of the year was sponsored by our class, the St. Patrick Dance. We were also represented on the varsity team by: Wright Blake, James Ethridge, John Helm, James Scott, and William Wil- Iiams. ln our junior year we achieved even greater heights. We were di- vided into two sections under the sponsorship of Mrs. Elizabeth Holmes and Mrs. Bertha J. Washington. We were represented in athletics by: James Ethridge, Alfred Winston, and Rudolph Johnson. Lola White was awarded a prize for being the best ladylike student in the school. Early in September of 1947 our senior year began. We were divided into two sections again with Mrs. Bertha J. Washington and Mrs. Elizabeth Holmes as our sponsors. We were represented in athletics by the same boys. Our contestants for the Pepsi Cola scholarship contest were: Danielle Bowles, Edyth Carter, and Lola White. We were represented in the Miss Homecoming drive by Miss Wanda Steed who was crowned Miss Simmons . ln the month of October 1947 a lovely student, Margaret Campbell, came to our class from Delaware, Ohio. She was active in dramatics, radio and assembly programs. She returned home on account of ill health and passed in December. We sincerely regret her passing. Each year we have won honors in every phase of the school activities and have also carried a high scholastic average. We shall leave Simmons with cherished thoughts of an honorable school. Edyth Carter Mildred McLemore Lola White P0et9s Corner Original Poems From English Department WONDERING Wonder what's in life for me. When I become a man, Will I be known for great deeds, Or will misfortune be my plan? Wonder if l'll play the part To invent, discover, or build, These are thoughts within my heart That someday I hope be full filled. Now I'm eager to become a mon, I often sit and ponder I'm striving hard as I can To avoid Wondering, but I wonder. . . . . Fred Parks THE ROAD OF RIBBON The road was like a ribbon at night Gleaming for miles and miles In the pole moon light. Going on and on to distant lands Giving service to every man. Gleaming like a ribbon in some small child's hair Just roaming on without never a care. The road was bright with a gleam from the moon Making it look like a flower in bloom Shining like a ribbon so tiny and small Giving service to one and all. Going places, doing things, seeing what others may never see. . . . . Fay Davis SNOWFLAKES Like soft wisps of cotton, The snowflakes fell into wintry night, Each tiny crystal glistening In the fading moonlight. Soon the ground was covered With a carpet-like coat of snow. The night became silent, And the wind began to blow. Flurries of snow blew this way and that, Breezes of silver dust. Over the head and under the feet, The beautiful white snow brushed. The snow covered the world And the earth was blessed, For now it seemed like A haven of complete rest. . . . Evelyn Barrett LOVE Without you, it's like the sea without water, lt's like a sky without it's blue, lt's like a home without a family, That's what it's like without you. At night when the stars are shining above, lt is you that I am thinking of. You're in my arms so it seems, But it all ends up to be a dream. When a boy and girl meet with a smile And are greeted with a hug, Then life has begun to be worth-while, lt leads to one thing, and that is love. . . . McGhee Most people find truth in the statement, a beautiful body is pleasing to the eye. That is why we, the girls at Simmons take pride in the honor of participating in physical activity. When l write the word beautiful l don't mean the version Hollywood fashion designers. Most of us couldn't be beautiful in those terms, no matter how hard we tried. l mean the beauty gained by the development of our physical features. Mrs. Senorita McGhee, as director of the girl's physical education de- partment expresses a desire to develop a more well rounded program in the future. We hope that the classes that follows l948 will keep this spirit of Brotherhood awake in America a land of the free for all. Glee Club Sponsors, Mr. B. H. Shepherd, Mrs. E. D. Vaughan Just as music is all about us, so do we need it many times. There are many uses of music, to enliven our activities, to add beauty or gayety or solemnity to certain occasion, to enrich our minds and hearts, and to give us understanding. Music has the power to take us out of our everyday selves into a world of the spirit, of pure thoughts, of happiness, of sympathy, of fun, of aspiration, and to bring us back again refreshed and better able to do our work in the world. The Glee Club of Simmons High School is striving to bring to the school the highest type of music. We are already making plans for Commence- ment and the musical Festival to be held in May. It develops within the participant high standards of sportsmanship. ln the fall of 1944, our class athletic career began. With Coach Robert Harris as our tutor, we boasted the following members of our class as varsity men, football: James Johnson and Rudolph Johnson, basketball: James Ethridge. ln basketball, the varsity won the championship of the Eastern Section and third place in the State Tournament. ln our sophomore year, James Scott, William Williams, John Helm, Wright Blake, and James Ethridge, bore the responsibility of defending the purple and gold on the basketball court. We considered this quite an honor for mere sophomores. This opportunity was brought about when many of the varsity men were called to the service of our country. Again James Johnson and Rudolph Johnson represented us upon the gridiron. James Johnson, Rudolph Johnson, Kenneth Ward, Fred Parks, Thaddeus Ware, Alfred Winston, Eugene Brandon, Rudolph Henderson, Owens Carter, and James Ethridge, were the class football heroes during our junior year. These stalwart knights of the gridiron helped the varsity to establish a sea- sonal record of seven games won and three games lost out of a ten-game schedule. The same boys who represented us on the basketball court dur- ing our sophomore year, continued to represent us in our junior year. This year the varsity again won the championship of the Eastern Section. Our senior year brought us additional football heroes in the persons of Albert Mitchell and Andrew Mosby. In basketball, Alfred Winston was added. JAMES ETHRIDGE, '48 Athletic Director F00'l'BALL C Mr. Henry Lee Thomas, Mr. F. O BASKETBALL DRAMATICS Sponsor, Mrs. B. J. Home-Makers of America Sponsor, Mrs. R. S. Gilliam Practical Arts and Crafts Sponsor, Mr. John D. Parks P. T. A. Association l do not ask of any man alive That he knows all the answers. I only ask a great caring- About what happens to human beings and their hopes And then l ask of myself as much as another. --Bona ro W. Overst reet These words express simply and completely the spirit that animated our Founders of the Parent-Teacher Association and the spirit that should be the motivation for all we do today. We need to care greatly about human beings and their hopes. We need to care greatly about the heritage we are leaving for our children. We need to care about these things greatly enough to see to it that our children have a normal home life, that they have abundant educational opportunities, that their physical, mental, and spiritual health is of the best, that they shall be trained to assume responsibility when their turn comes, that they love with a great and abiding love all that is meant by American democracy and work to make it a reality here in this country and elsewhere. We must care enough to make certain that we will not allow in our communities the kind of conditions which make many of our precious young people offenders against the law, that never again will we have a lost generation of eager youth who find that society has little use for their energy and ambitions. Let us extend our great caring for all children, so that together they may be ready and able to create a better world out of what is left of the old one. For a half century, the National Congress of Parent and Teachers has had a great caring for the individual child in the individual home and for all children, all homes, all schools every where. Never was there greater need for intelligent and vigorous action. Are you ready to meet the challenge? The great challenge of today, for parents and teachers is three fold: Let us strive earnestly and unceasingly to make this earth a place where homes may be established in peace and where children may grow to matur- ity without fear. Equally important, let us take upon ourselves the task of educating young people for their responsibilities as of a united world. And in our own communities as well as on a national scale, let us give serious consideration to those social problems that tend to disintegrate the home. If we can meet this challenge we shall bring to fulfillment the ideals and principles envisioned by our organization.. We shall be performing services of incalculable value to our own dear ones, to our communities, to our country and to the world.
