While we say good-bye today, And start on the next phase of our life, While we smile and hug and cry and laugh, And realize that we've made it, We have one final thought: Thank You. To those who have touched our lives, And made us more enriched, To those who have given us their all, And inspired us to give in return, We are grateful for the interaction: Caring. For emotional and economic support that got us to today, Thank you Mom, Dad, Honey, and Family, For providing the atmosphere to inspire our growth and thought Thank you Simmons - your profs and administration, We never would have made it without you: Success. Microcosm: a little world that is the epit- ome of a larger world or universe. 5 M YZNJI 1 mv 1,3 ia . 4515 Q, Ykzuaummmw... . 1 'LQL TL, COLLEGE Back In August 1 979, over 400 seventeen and eighteen year olds anxiously entered Simmons' gates, looking forward to the collegiate experience that they had heard about and dreamed of. After losing some classmates and gaining others, we are about to leave Simmons to take out places In civic, professional, and higher educational positions. For four years we have attended classes herein which we have sharpened our skills to function in these positions. But to be truly prepared, tt has taken more than what the classroom has had to offer - it has taken involvement in other activities and coopera- tion with others. Simmons has had many of the things to make a well-rounded person. For the Student, there have been the diverse courses, books, and infinite papers and exams. For the Athlete, there have been sports teams and the Fenway Cup compeition. The ArtistfPerformer has had groups in which she could express her creativity. The Participant could engage in numerous activities and organizations. And Everyone has had Boston in which she could do just about anything. We on the Microcosm staff have worked very hard to make this edition capture the essence of the Simmons community. We hope that this Microcosm will bring back your feelings about Simmons each time you look through it. After all, like it or not, we owe a part of ourselves - some growth and maturity - to Simmons. We have shared good times and friendship as well as difficult times and worries. Together we have leamed and experienced a lot. ., Each day now will be a new adventure for us, a time to achieve the things that we have always dreamed of doing. As we each go our separate ways, we will carry a bit of one another with us. It is time for us to get involved to make things succeed, instead of complaining about how things happen. With a little maturity, a little respect, a little cooperation, and a lot of patience we can accomplish miracles. I wish you the best in accomplishing yours! See you at our reunions, fe is 1.4. - A . FACULTY When Simmons College formally opened its doors in 1902, it was a school where young women would be educat- ed in those arts, sciences, and lndus- tries which would prepare them for an economically independent life. To achieve this, the College was organized into various technical schools. These in- cluded the schools of Household Eco- nomics, Secretarial Studies, Library Sci- ence, General Science, Social Workers, Public Health Nursing, the Prince School of Store Service, Landscape Ar- chitecture, and Physical Education. In addition to technical subjects, liberal arts were taught by the original faculty often, comprised ofthe president, dean, and eight full-time professors. In his book, Delayed by Fire, Simmons chemistry professor Kenneth L. Mark described the first Simmons educators in these words: This was the Faculty whose problem was to administer a new kind of collegiate education for women. Youth was an out- standing characteristic of the group. None of them was yet fifty years old, and the average age was under thirty-tive years . . . Of the first eight instructors, only one, the head of Library Science, was a woman. S William J. I, ,egg 59 4 ws OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT SIMMONS COLLEGE October 21, 1982 To The Class of 1983: It seems like such a short time ago that you joined us, and now you are on your way. Quo vadis? It sounds like heresy, but a person I was talking with recently said, I tell people not to plan their lives, they might succeed and close off their most interesting possibilities. When I objected that this sounded like chaos, he admitted that what had benefitted him was improvisation on a general sense of di- rection. One could do worse. Your time at Simmons, I hope, helped you with a sense of self-worth, it certainly helped you explore career possibilities and make some choices, it helped you I hope, to extend your knowledge of our civil- ization and to sensitize you to issues of social justice. These are certainly the basis for a general sense of direction. But plan to include not exclude. Leave yourself room to breathe and to grow. Whether you go on to graduate school or not, do not shut yourself off from the world of learning. One of the great glories of our culture is that knowledge is everywhere accessible, and of our nation that democracy demands that its citizens be well informed. And to answer the question, where are you going, perhaps the destination is less important than the journey, where you get off the train less important than what you have seen along the way. It has been a pleasure to have had you here at Simmons and we all look forward to the interesting and worthwhile things you are going to do with your lives. Yours, William J. Hoies Prlscllla L. IS GFHCEOFTHEDEAN October 26, 1982 Dear Members of the Class of 1983, A few years ago you accepted our invitation to join the Simmons community and to participate in what we believe is a unique educational opportunity. The formal part of that experience is almost over Cor is over, depending upon when you found time to read this letter.J However, the-most important part of your relationship with us is yet to come and that is the application of your learning to life's experiences and challenges. As you graduate, each of us wishes you the best of success and each of us shares in the pride of your accomplishments. But each of us also acknowledges that the work we started with you is unfinished. The task of completing your education now rests with you alone and with new associates, friends and colleagues. It is with assurance that we believe you have developed Hthe self- confidence and spirit of independence that will permit you to lead a rich personal life and the competence to become useful members of our society.H It is the manner in which you apply these qualities that will continue throughout your life to unite you with the Simmons community. For that is the tradition of your education that will remain constant throughout changing times. Our pleasure has come from watching you begin, our reward will be received through your collective successes. My sincere best wishes, Q EQEELEZL 4? 'Q' QT lVIT15S I A ..- Though a few Simmons traditions, such as Friday teas, Convocation, and May Breakfast, have been in existence almost since the founding of the Col- lege, other traditions have come and gone. The annual Freshman Frolic, when freshman dressed up as fIve-year- olds and indulged in children 's games, popcom and ice cream cones, was one such tradition. Others included the Ghost Walk f the yearly attempt by soph- omores on a certain October night to march through North and South Halls against a blockade of juniorsj, Christ- mas Vespers, the Sophomore Shuffle dance, and a mock wedding between members of the junior and freshman classes. Step-singing, which came into practice in front of South Hall In 1906, and Track Day Ilike our Spring Spree! have made a comeback at the College. The Senior Prom was held in the dining hall until 1933, when it was moved to a nearby hotel, much to the dismay of some conservative authorities of the College. Adverse to the students' at- tending a dance in so public a place and being accompanied there and back by their escorts, College officials re- quired them to assemble and proceed to the dance in specially chartered trol- ley cars. Like today, parties, receptions, and holiday celebrations helped round out the year's traditions for the first Sim- mons women. vf ' 7-3 'f ' C or 1 T 2 1 Q S Z .1 'E , C -wi, . ' .' . . 'fu- is K 6p,N.lZA T10 RTS Most of the current organizations at Simmons can trace their roots back al- most as far as the founding of the Col- lege. The Student Guild, comparable to our Student Govemment Association, was organized in 1912 to promote the spirit of mutual helpfulness and service among the students of the College. By 1923, it was responsible for examining the constitutions of all organizations and chartering new groups. The Y. W.C.A., the largest religious group on campus, was joined by the Newman Club, the Menorah Society, the Unitar- ian Club, and the Christian Science Club. The first technical school club BOSTW. H155 'H Shopiilllleels Simmons CollC90 A fsimilar to our liaisonsj -- the Ellen Richards Club, formed by members of the School of Science - was founded in 1920 and was soon one of many clubs from nearly every Simmons school. The choir, glee club, and Mandolin Club united in 1 91 3 to form the Musical Asso- ciation. By 1916, the Drama Club was putting on plays, usually in the dining hall. While sports had existed at Sim- mons since 1910, The Simmons Athletic Association wasn 't started until 1911. Various other clubs, such as the Civic League, the Poetry Club, and the Debat- ing Society, became active throughout the 1920's. f?'?Q D S iran Class Officers class of 1983 Debra Sadugor - President Mary Jo Czarkowski - VP Anne Kingsley - Secretary Mary Maistros - Treasurer class of 1984 Sandi Metheny - President Karen Keane - VP Mary Lou Waterman - Secretary Karen Scott - Treasurer class of 1985 Linda Davidson - President Chris Pappas - VP Debbie Burns - Secretary Kate Breslin - Treasurer class of 1986 Susan Koch - President Sue Cohen - VP Lisa Schiff - Secretary Kim Strob - Treasurer Student Government Association Sharon Garlitz - Public Affairs Michelle Goldstein - Secretary Elena Gonzalez - Treasurer Susan Hall - Head C.A.
