There are only moments. They like to tell us that time runs along in even, ticking measures, minute to day to month to decade, but that isn't true. It's like a gropingjourney in the fog, hiking up Bootspur Trail on Mount Washington in bad weather, nothing around you but the rocks of the trail and the ghostly shadows of the iirs-and all at onee you reach the summit and it's blown clear and the sun in blazing down out of a vibrant, rain-washed sky and everything is new and full of clarity, and time does have a stop, just as the great man said. Moments like that, few and far between, clearings in the fog, on the high groundf' -Anton Myrer The Last Convertible, 91978, Berkley Publishing Corporation, 200 Madison Avenue, New York, NY 10016

I think that every yearbook staff must begin with high aspirations. You always want your book to be a little better than the year before, and you always vow not to make the same mistakes as the previous staff. It's not until you get into the thick of things and you're faced with one crisis after another that you realize you're not immune to those mistakes. When you're faced with a deadline and only 24 hours left to meet it, you begin to make compromises. Certainly the 1982 Microcosm has its ups and downs, and I am sure that there must be some errors in the copy--after all, most of the proofreading was done on Christmas Eve under the tree. But on the whole, the editorial staff feels it is a unique publication. We apologize for any mistakes or omissions. This issue commemorates the 80th anniversary of the College. In 1902, the first group of women entered Simmons and began traditions which still play a part in'our lives today. A special scrapbook section in this yearbook is dedicated to those women and the spirit with which they sought to advance their education in a reluctant society. It is also worthy to note that this year's book was typeset totally inhouse at Simmons. The typesetting, photography, writing, design, and layout were all done by staff members. I would like to thank them for their enthusiasm and effort. In addition, I would like to thank the staff of the College Archives for their help in researching background material and obtaining photographs: the Office of Public Information for supplying some of the faculty pictures we were missing: and most especially, our advisor Deborah Smiley for help above and beyond the call of duty which allowed me to get through this project with some amount of sanity intact. I hope you enjoy the 1982 Microcosm, but if you do have any complaints call 555-1212. Sincerely, 4 . - Monica L. Percival Editor-in-Chief
