You always want your book to be a little better than the year before, and you always vow not to make the same mistakes as the previous staff. It's not until you get into the thick of things and you're faced with one crisis after another that you realize you're not immune to those mistakes. When you're faced with a deadline and only 24 hours left to meet it, you begin to make compromises. Certainly the 1982 Microcosm has its ups and downs, and I am sure that there must be some errors in the copy--after all, most of the proofreading was done on Christmas Eve under the tree. But on the whole, the editorial staff feels it is a unique publication. We apologize for any mistakes or omissions. This issue commemorates the 80th anniversary of the College. In 1902, the first group of women entered Simmons and began traditions which still play a part in'our lives today. A special scrapbook section in this yearbook is dedicated to those women and the spirit with which they sought to advance their education in a reluctant society. It is also worthy to note that this year's book was typeset totally inhouse at Simmons. The typesetting, photography, writing, design, and layout were all done by staff members. I would like to thank them for their enthusiasm and effort. In addition, I would like to thank the staff of the College Archives for their help in researching background material and obtaining photographs: the Office of Public Information for supplying some of the faculty pictures we were missing: and most especially, our advisor Deborah Smiley for help above and beyond the call of duty which allowed me to get through this project with some amount of sanity intact. I hope you enjoy the 1982 Microcosm, but if you do have any complaints call 555-1212. Sincerely, 4 . - Monica L. Percival Editor-in-Chief There are only moments. They like to tell us that time runs along in even, ticking measures, minute to day to month to decade, but that isn't true. It's like a gropingjourney in the fog, hiking up Bootspur Trail on Mount Washington in bad weather, nothing around you but the rocks of the trail and the ghostly shadows of the iirs-and all at onee you reach the summit and it's blown clear and the sun in blazing down out of a vibrant, rain-washed sky and everything is new and full of clarity, and time does have a stop, just as the great man said. Moments like that, few and far between, clearings in the fog, on the high groundf' -Anton Myrer The Last Convertible, 91978, Berkley Publishing Corporation, 200 Madison Avenue, New York, NY 10016 IO 1- . ,, Q! ,J .X L+' ff .mil Rula Abdul Qadir Hometown: Dhahran, Saudi Arabia Major: Management Theme Song: You Can Get It If You Really Want Likes: Politics, Harvard Square Dislikes: Apathy, materialism Ambition: Hospital administrator Karen Anne Abood Hometown: Worcester, MA Major: Physical Therapy Likes: Music, dancing, sunsets, food Ana Claudia Passasrelli Alarc6n Nickname: Closhy, HZO, Cawa Hometown: Guatemala Major: Engineering Psychology Theme Song: La Culpable' Bostanian Haunts: 171 Bay State Road, Aku-Aku, Burger King Likes: Cocodriles, friends, Guate. Most importantly, you. The same intelligence, energy and integrity which brought you here and which made you stay productive, will be there to be called upon after graduationg and you will have more years of experience and maturity to help you make even better use of these abilities. You will be on your own, but you will have been on your own these past yearsg you will probably have to support your- self, but in a de facto way that is what you have done here. So think beyond survival, not how do I stay alive out there, but what do I want to do, where do I want to be and with whom? What do I find interesting, stimulating and satisfy- ing? How do I continue to grow, where is this all going to come out? This growth did not begin at Simmons and it should not end here. When you finally say I have arrived where do you want to be? The goals that the program had in 1970 have not changed. The program was designed to increase the visibility of Afro-American studies throughout the Simmons curriculum, improve coordination of required courses, provide support for organized student activities, increase the availability of resources for students seeking academic and personal advice, and to develop a collection of important resource materials. The Afro-American experience has been infused into many courses and programs in the Simmons College curriculum, said Director, Floyd Barbour. This program has helped stimulate the continuing development of courses and research in this area. merican Studies became a course of study throughout many of the nation's educational institutions about 40 years ago. A course on the jacksonian period, taught jointly by the English and history departments, marked the beginning of the American Studies Program at Simmons. Richard Sterne, Professor of English, was re- sponsible for developing the program in 1967. The program is interdepartmental. Anything taught that has to do with the American way of life is part of the program, said Mr. Sterne. Program courses include music, art, English literature, history, economics, and government. Graduates of the program enter careers as researchers, museum curators, and educators. A brochure is currently being developed to advertise the program. Some people don't know we're here, said Mr. Sterne. The brochure will make the program and what it has to offer more visible to students. Richard C. Sterne, Coordinator his is the first year ofexistence for the Applied Computer Science Program at Simmons. Although computer science courses have been offered since 1967, previously there was no concentration available in this area. Students in the program investigate the applications of computers in other fields of study such as management, communications, chemistry or psychology. .3 Co-coordinator of the department, Edward Prenowitz, believes that Hthe program will grow. Students who concentrate in some other field will take computer courses to broaden their education. The program instructs students how to use, design, and program different computers and systems. There are three parts to their education these include a core of computer science courses a project in which computer techniques are used to solve a problem in another concentration, and an independent study done during senior year. Mr. Prenowitz remarked that, People use computers in alljobs. This program will train people who can communicate with both com- puters and other professionals in their work- place. Qi---f . . After World War II, according to Dr. Peter Bowers, department chairperson, the field of chemistry changed. There were more sophisti- cated instruments available and calculations that once took hours to do now only took a few moments. Then came the computer, and the field of chemistry changed again. Dr. Bowers said, In 1974 the first lecture to my freshman class was on the use of the slide rule. Now wejust assume that everyone has a calculator. You're lucky if you can even find a slide rule in the storesf, With the completion of the science building, the department moved from cramped labs and 3 offices in the Main College Building to the spacious labs located on the third floor of the science building. Because of the new facilities, the department has been able to emphasize lab work in the curriculum. Simmons graduates have a good reputation both locally and nationally for excellence in lab and research work. We teach with more relevance today, explained Dr. Bowers. The Department of History was once part of the School of Social Sciences, but became a separate discipline in the l960's. Afro-American Studies has been added to the curriculum but the basic concentration requirements haven't changed. According to department Chairperson, Mark Solomon, The number of history concentrators varies with external factors, such as the economy and political activism. In the past, women majoring in history usually went into teaching. Today, a history background prepares a student for careers in law, city planning, and government services. Mr. Solomon remarked, There are more career opportunities for women. There are openings in law and governmentf' If there have been any changes in the health sciences, physical therapy and medical technol- ogy, it is that there are more men entering those fields. In the past, these have traditionally been fields open almost exclusively to women. The Physical Therapy Program originated at Harvard Medical Schooljust after World War I. The program was open to women who already had degrees but who wanted specific physical therapy training. In 1946, physical therapy became a conjoint program of Simmons College and the Children's Hospital Medical Center and was redesigned for undergraduates. The first class to receive a baccalaureate degree and a certificate in physical therapy graduated in 1949. The program's clinical affiliations were expanded in 1973 to include'47 facilities. Before that time, students were trained exclusively for working with children. Today, the role of the physical therapist has expanded and there is more specialization. Students are trained to work with adults as well as with children. The p.t. students are the best in the college. The program has expanded and it has been a good expansion. The education has been broadened. It's important for students to be able to relate to adults, too. To limit clinical experiences to children is too narrowing. The Medical Technology Program began around the same time as physical therapy. According to Dr. Coghlan, It's a small program but a good one. On the average, there are five concentrators per class. The program has changed its affiliation from the Beth Israel Hospital to the Lynn Hospital. Dr. Coghlan explains that Lynn has a very well- equipped lab. Lynn Hospital was the first in the area to put its lab on computersf' When labs were first computerized, it was thought that they would replace medical tech- nologists. However, this did not happen. No computer can identify cells. They'vejust changed the way things are donef' said Dr. Coghlan. There's more instrumentation and that's brought a greater degree of accuracy. W he beginning of the Department of Man- agement traces back to the College's Secretarial School of the early 1900's. These students were trained to be private secretaries, registrars, and office assistants. Today the department, which is the largest in the College with an enrollment of over 2,000 students, trains women to be managers with their own secretaries. The Secretarial School evolved into the School of Business and from there grew into the Department of Management. The curriculum has grown and changed, adapting to the needs and wants of the times. john Pfaff, Chairperson, states that the attitudes about women in the work place are changing. Women are slowly overcoming 'math phobiaf We've added a math requirement to the curriculum and a course in corporate finance. Now women are being trained both quantitatively and qualitatively. In fact, women have shown a great aptitude for accounting. According to a report published in the Amer- ican Association of Schools of Business Dean's Letter, the number of women undergraduates earning a degree in business has increased tremendously. Between 1973 and 1980, the number of males who graduated with under- graduate degrees in business rose only 9.62 while those earned by women rose 36175.
