In the four years that we've been at Simmons many changes have occurred. When we arrived, the year was 1975 and the country was preparing for a celebration. Yet the city to which we came had long celebrated many of the things that other parts of the country were only beginning to recognize. Not the least of those things is knowledge, and the institution to which we came had long celebrated knowledge, not only in the academic sense, but in the practical one as well. Today it is 1979, and the country is no longer celebrating. It has undergone significant changes - social, economic and political ones -that can be seen in all aspects of our daily lives. Our school, too, has undergone many changes, physical as well as administrative. And like the others, we, the Class of '79, have not escaped the past four years unchanged. The changes have have occurred around us are relatively easy to detect, it is the changes within us - emotional, psychological and intellectual changes -that are difficult to document. lt is far simpler to chart economic developments than emotional ones. It is easier to demonstrate physical characteristics than psychological ones. And it is easier to capture the essence of social progress than intellectual progress. Therefore, we the Microcosm Staff present to you what is essentially a picture of the result of the changes that we have undergone, a glimpse of who we are in 1979, a microcosm of our lives. As you go through this book, we hope you enjoy what you see, but more importantly, we want you to try to remember not only the people and events the pictures illustrate, but also the feelings, thoughts and changes that have occurred since we arrived at Simmons in August of 1975. Remember, this is a Microcosm - not the whole picture, but, rather, a small look at our lives that represents a dynamic process of change and growth, a process that we hope will continue for years to come. Best of luck. I 5
