Dedication A library, like the mainspring of a watch, controls the life function and degree of intellectual activity of a university. For in the last analysis, the strength of a university library largely determines the quality of its teachers. A good teacher will not risk stagnating his potentiality by restricting his supply of information, nor any intellectually motivated student place his future in the hands of an inferior faculty. In a larger sense, the university library stands for self-education, and this is the only meaningful education. In the First universities, the only books were owned by the professor who read to his students, professing to have knowledge. One might say that a small library is sufficient, quoting the Bible that to the making of books there is no end, or the Koran, Throw away all books, this alone will sufHce, but these views cannot stand. Where education is a privilege a fine library is a luxury, and a well-education person a gold coin in a box of coppers. 6
