For in the last analysis, the strength of a university library largely determines the quality of its teachers. A good teacher will not risk stagnating his potentiality by restricting his supply of information, nor any intellectually motivated student place his future in the hands of an inferior faculty. In a larger sense, the university library stands for self-education, and this is the only meaningful education. In the First universities, the only books were owned by the professor who read to his students, professing to have knowledge. One might say that a small library is sufficient, quoting the Bible that to the making of books there is no end, or the Koran, Throw away all books, this alone will sufHce, but these views cannot stand. Where education is a privilege a fine library is a luxury, and a well-education person a gold coin in a box of coppers. 6 ,, . x Q , . Alfred North Whitehead 129 Looking out over the CIIIIIPLIS she is reallv looking over her past four years here. She has vet to draw her conclusions- perhaps thev will never be Final. Her ideas about Sinnnons. about education. about her life and goals will be constantly changing in a world of flux-the onlv constant is her Self- the Sell' that Sinnnons has helped her find. The world she faces more directlv now is not one she can view in onlv one set of terrns-college has taught her that. It is not a world of one era-of one stage of development- or even of one tinie. Its one essential unitv is perhaps a lack of unitv. a constant boil of peoples and events. And if in this world that she faces there is cause for despair: if she cannot at this point see anv posible road to a solution, she dares not turn her back on the boil-if Sinnnons had not taught her that. it would have failed her and failed the niacrocosni of which its niicrocosni is a part. But we do not believe that Sinnnons has failed in this essential sense. for it is to Sinnnons that she owes her abilitv to con- tribute-the Sinnnons to which she is now saving goodbve but will never leave behind. 130 SENIOR DIRECTORY AINSLIE, jean-Social Science, 14 Magee Street, Hyde Park 36, Massachusetts.
