John Simmons worl-:ed within an area of industry that he per- sonally revolutionized, and his contacts in this industry brought him into touch with many women left destitute, without skill or training, after the Civil War, and with that economic class of women, seam- stresses, who made his own economic position possible. He was not one of the solid men of literary Boston, and he had no accurate conception of academic curricula.
