PRESIDENTIS MESSAGE One of the lasting satisfactions of a teacher's life is the opportunity to witness the unfolding of a human personality. In the college years for which this volume of Microcosm provides the record of the Class of 1937, we, your teachers, have watched your development with the leeenest interest, and it is only natural that we should take pride in your accomplishment as if it were our own. It is so easy for us to forget that your achievement is ours only to the extent that we have been able to provide a setting favorable to your growth. How well we have done this, is for you rather than for us to judge. Your class has been in College during one of the most trying periods in the history of this country. You entered at a time of great economic uncertainty and you have pursued your coursewith less assurance that there was a place for you in society than we hope will ever be the case with a subsequent college gen- eration. Yet you have met your difficulties with fortitude and have preserved an even temper in an atmosphere of insecurity. There are those who will tell you that your college days are the happiest you will ever experience, but I doubt whether any of your teachers would sub- scribe to that view. We have lenown too much of the sacrifices which many of your number have been forced to make in order to bring your college careers to a successful conclusion, and we are too well aware of the growing satisfactions which come with the larger responsibilities of adult living.
