M The 1977 version of the Simley Cross country team tin- ished their regular season schedule with a fifth place finish in the conference meet. The team was led by Senior Cap- tain, Jim Reed. Jim won first place honors four times this season and finished fifth in the individual race in the con- ference meet. The south metro area and in particular, the Nlissota Conference, was the best it has ever been. Lake- ville finished second in the conference and first in the re- gion and second in the state in Class AA. Farmington was second in the state in Class A and Burnsville won the state title. Cross Country in this area is really tough. Highlights of the season included wins over Northfield twice, New Prague, Woodbury, and a second place finish in the Hud- son Invitational. But the Spartans, lead by Co-captains Greg Blair and Tim McIntosh, jumped back and won their second game 20-O. Although the Spartans ended the year with a disappointing 3-6 record, the effort and enthusiasm was always there. A special congratulations go to Tim Auger for ending the season with 663 yards total rushing, Tim Mclntosh and Mark Cotton for making All Conference, and Tim McIntosh for being voted most valuable player. Laura Kahle, who had a very good year, was named the most valuable player. The title of most improved player went to Nancy Kromschroeder. lVIrs. The backbone of the team was a fine group of seniors lead by captains, Jeff Reinsburg and Tim Bucholtz. The season was highlighted by two ties with highly rated Washburn and Prior Lake. The scores for both games were one to one. Their main strength was the defense and goalie. Their main weakness was the inability to score, averaging on one goal per game. The future is bright with many good players returning next season, including leading scorer, Gary Marion. The junior varsity had a impressive 7-3 record. Coach Schueller and Coach Phillips have been very impressed with the quality of behavior and leadership shown by the soccer team in 1977 and hope it continues. 32 Don Frankenstein Soccer, not sock 'em You're supposed to kick the BALL! Instead of only six girls there are now ten of them. They were also fortunate enough to receive new uniforms this year. The new look for the varsity squad was the Spartan mascot, Joan Oson. She really helped by getting the fans Tired up. Homecoming was one of the most en- joyable times for the cheerleaders, and the seniors were really honored when they woke up and found that the Spartanettes had decorated their houses. This includes playing at football games, pa- rades and other such activities. This year, due to the weather, the band was only able to play at two football games. They, however, provided entertaining programs which consisted of disco mu- sic as well as music from different com- mercials for their audiences. The season basically began with the Inver Grove Heights parade and contin- ued with the St. Cloud Homecoming Pa- rade. The band, who was joined by the Color-guard and the Spartanettes, con- cluded its season with an indoor march- ing concert which included songs from their halftime shows as well as songs that the band was not able to include in their halftime programs. During the winter and spring, the band divided into the symphonic band and concert band. They practiced music for contests and concerts that they par- ticipated in during the year. Throughout the year the two bands appear together at pepfests and games to cheer the various teams on. 39 Colorguard step in time Front: L. Storeby, B. Welsh, A. Sweeney, B. Lucht, D. Klein. Back: M. Determination, and hard work were a part of the team's great effort and ability in all of their games. This year's tri-captains, Mark Cotton, Gordy Phillips, and Jeff Reinsberg, led the mighty Spartans into a good start and kept the spirits high. That was the story most of the year for the Spar- tan Animals. lVlost every match the Animals found themselves deep in the hole after the first few matches. The early losses were not from the lack of skill but from the lack of experience. From there on, the Spartans were on the attack and more often than not found themselves pulling out a seemingly impos- sible victory. The power punch came from live se- niors, Bob Zilla, Jim Trudeau, Jeff Donnelly, Tim Nlclntosh, and Paul Kittleson. Zilla, an entrant in the 1976 State Tournament, placed 2nd at the Hudson Tournament and has an outstanding record. Trudeau who placed 2nd in last year's State Tournament is out for the number one spot, winning every tournament and going undefeated by pinning nearly every oppo- nent thus far. Donnelly who is undefeated in dual meets, so far, is looking forward to the post season tournaments. lVlcIntosh, tHead Animall, took first at the Hudson Tournaments and has an overall record of second only to Trudeau's. Kittleson placed 3rd at the Hudson Tournaments and has an excellent record. A special hand goes to Don DeRusha Cjuniorl, who had a great deal of pressure on him, tbeing the last wrestler and often the team point tie breakerl and came out on top. Joyce icopy editorl, Annual meetings are FUN! As many of the new staff members discovered being an active yearbook member entails skill with a pen, a crop- per, a camera, a typewriter, and an ability to stay awake into the late hours of the evenings. The dedicated staff members faced such formidable foes as a fifty-six page deadline immediately before the winter vacation and another fifty-six page deadline following it. This, coupled with damaged negatives, miss- ing pictures, and no sophomores to work on the Sophomore Section added to the excitement of being an annual staff member. QA special plea did cause some sophomores to join, and the book DOES have a Sophomore Section.J In spite of all the problems, the staff iby eating pizza, chocolate donuts, Oreo cookies, and by downing gallons of Coke and Pepsil produced a total of one hundred and seventy six pages-not perfect pages, but at least pages. A great event in the life of the year- book staff occurred in early lVlarch when after hearing the 9:00 o'clock an- nouncements, they realized the words, There will be an annual staff meeting at 3:30 today after school in Rm. D- 31O did not How forth from the inter- com. Unfortunately, many members were at a loss as to what they could possibly do with an evening in which there were no annual pages involved. When asked how they, as individuals, had managed, a somewhat distraught photo editor stated, HI gritted my teeth and endured the pressures until the end. Memories linger long after In the minds and hearts Of us, your friends. Rest assured, you will not Be forgotten now, Or on graduation day or FOREVER. Class of '78, l 1 5 The time has come to say good-bye. The long awaited days 'til June lst are now coming too fast for some and not fast enough for others. It is so hard to believe that we, the Class of '78, are about to embark on an everlasting journey-that of the outside world. We have been traveling the pro- tected halls of Simley High and will soon ind our- selves scattered about like leaves in the fall. Some of us will go straight to work while others will con- tinue their education in college or vo-tech. Re- gardless, June lst will be the last time we will ever be together as a whole, the Class of 78. Many se- niors find themselves confused and scared. Deci- sions have to be madeg ones that we can only make ourselves. The future is full of uncertainty. Only time will tell. rf- i,. ,-, V .f as We :ii N 5 r- it ii made it!!! It seems as if it were yesterday that I walked the halls of good ol' Simley High. I sure do miss the place. Why don't I pack up my things and take a trip back to Inver Grove Heights. This tropical weather is getting to be a bore. As I left my condominium, I noticed that the annual cliff diving competitions were being held. I just had to stare in awe at those beautiful swan dives, and as I stared, the divers looked so familiar. No wonder- they were Greg Levine and Julie Bade. After surviving the shock, I called a cab to take me to the airport. As I got into the cab, I was totally surprised to see that my driver was Renee Dubs. On the way to the air- port we caught up on old times. She told me that she had recently been in New York where they were making a film starring Gordy Sawyer. It was a musical in which Mary Beth Schmidt was the lead singer. Renee also mentioned that she had bumped into Sue Germscheid, who was an executive secretary for the KMYX News Team. The world famous news team consisted of some old high school acquaintances. The an- chorman was Mike Griffen, famous for bringing pinstripe suits back in style. The weatherman was Dr. Jeff Reinsberg imeteorologisti and sportscaster, of course, was John Kelly. We arrived at the airport just in time for my take off for Minneapolis-St. Paul. As I boarded the plane, I was shocked to see Linda Pugh as my stewardess. I sat down trying to absorb all I had recently heard of old high school friends when a strange yet familiar voice came over the intercom. My pilot was Rita Ziolkowski! The plane had to pick up passengers in Denver. I sat back reading an interesting magazine which I had bought in the airport shop. I just had to buy it because the picture of the world famous model, Michelle Mero, caught my attention. The other major article on President Barron and Vice President Conner cap- tured my interest and proved to be worthwhile reading material until we touched down at Denver. As passengers boarded, a quick glance showed me that the rest of the Flight would be a reunion for me, for Sister Kim Harklerode entered the plane along with three of our Olympic representatives-Tim Auge ldecathlon winnerl, Maureen Sweeny igymnasti, and Billy Pape igold medalist skieri. Also, to my surprise was the fact that the famous poet Jill Taylor and past Miss America Barb Krech were on board. We arrived in Minneapolis-St. Paul on schedule. Since I was terribly hungry, I rented a car and sped off for McDonalds only to be stopped for speeding. I got off easy because the policeman happened to be Tim Ecker. As I entered McDonalds, friendly Jean Rucker and manager Rob King greeted me. Eating today proved to be an experience, for I broke my tooth on a french fry and had to be rushed to the nearest dental office. The dental assistant, Sandra Davis, led me into the dental chair where Todd Hulse fixed my tooth. After leaving the oflice I stopped at the store to pick up some food. I was staying at the house of an old high school married couple, Deb and Joe Gelhaye. The store's name caught my eye, for it was named Joe8tPat8tGene8tRich's Food Market. It turned out that they were quad-owners. I arrived at Deb and Joe's in time for the Superbowl game. It sure was exciting to see Tim McIntosh and Greg Blair play on national television for the Vikings. After the game I went up to see my old high school. I entered only to see Jeff McKenzie as principal and Keith Kotosky as assistant principal. Simley was still the same, but I couldn't take all the shocks of seeing so many of the students from the CLASS OF '78, and therefore, took the next flight out of Minneapolis-St. Paul back to the Bahamas. 157 North Prror L 42 ,. .. . gg' 1 +L-1 '- Basketball Wrestling Basketball Varsity Opponent Simley Opponent 25 18 Owatonna 56 4 27 52 Lakeville 33 43 Lakeville it 21 42 Apple Valley 64 'R 14 Apple Valley ' 47 45 Rosemount 47 37 Rosemount 31 Austin 27 55 Northheld 63 54 Northfield Rosemount 38 34 Sibley 32 58 Sibley 12 40 Farmington 24 68 Farmington H A 24 51 South St. Paul 64 65 South St. Paul Lake 26 49 Prior Lake 71 44 Prior Lake 51 Lea 45 42 Lakeville 24 59 Lakeville 45 H ,mA, M 22 30 52 50 Austin 56 65 ' 'i i:' ' Apple Valley Simley 14 16 26 16 Stillwater Sibley 22 25 20 22 44 41 28 A26 47 35 za 13 47 31 28 16 5 1 as 3 3 1 1 cf-Qaffhb SUMMIT STATE BANK SOUTH ST PAUL 9th 81 Southvlew Blvd South St Paul Minnesota 55075 THE MOST CONVENIENT BANK IN TOWN MEMBER F D I C 451 4800 Josten School Rmgs Edwards 84 Sons Jewelers SOUTHVIEW SQUARE SHOPPING CENTER 1901 SOUTH ROBERT STREET W ST PAUL, MINNESOTA 451 3366 Loyal Grder' of' Moose So ST Paul Lodge II lO88 KEFFINGTONS FORMALWEAR RENTALS SALES 1436 SO ROBERT ST ST PAUL, MN 55118 457 5944 .. fp A ' Af?
