' 'A f- of SOFIA That Latin Touch Perhaps if in our time of youth we can help to bring better understanding between the nations of our world, the future holders of the time we'll find it to be a time of peace. The AFS Foreign Exchange Program is a small, yet important step toward achieving this goal. ln this 1969-70 school year, Simley was fortunate to be the host to pretty Sofia Amador who comes to us from San Jose, Costa Rica. Sofia speaks of Simley students as being friendly and of her classes she says, I enjoy them all! Sofia has become very much a part of Simley, being an active member in the Choir, G.R.A. and the A.F.S. Club. Upon her return to Costa Rica, Sofia plans to complete her senior year and then attend the University for an eventual career in social work. Sofia has brought to us that Latin Touch which even the band seemed to be infested with at the fall pop concert, which consisted of basically Latin-oriented music. While in America, she is making her home with the John Baskerville family. To Sofia, may her future be filled with every happiness. We shall always hold our memories of her year at Simley. The Latin Touch brought a welcome atmosphere to our choir this year. Sofia, singing, first soprano, became the third successive AFS student to participate as a member of our choral group. This is a tradition the choir hoper will be carried on throughout the coming years. 11'- Our Letter From Sofa I ,...,,l-qv rv V' Dear Friends: As you knovv. for many years the American Field Service has vvanted to fulfill this purpose: to convey a message of peace and friendship from one culture to another through its participating students. In Costa Rica. when I found this out. I thought it a marvel' ous thing to contribute to the unity of cultures and of those people living far from my country. I believe that the same feelings can be found within the Costa Rican people of other countries of our world. We all desire the same happiness and hope that all others will realize that peace is necessary for happiness. For this reason my desire to come here grew, After waiting a year. I received my notice of acceptance vvith greatloy. Since my arrival everyone has shown great warmth. In this school. which I consider my own. I hear each day. Hi Sofia! Although I don't know all your names. still I con- sider you all to be my friends. No doubt this year vvill be one of the best of my life. Thank you for making my stay so pleasant and happy. I am glad that I vvas given this opportunity to pe with you all. I shall never forget my wonderful year at Simley. Love. Sofia HONIECOIVIING A Mos! Meaningful Time Homecoming has always been a particularly special part of the school year. It seems that during this period of the year, involvement is something very difficult to escape from. The spirit of Homecoming tends to linger in the air, bringing with it the emotions of joy, sadness, and that Hproud feeling about our school which we often neglect to show during other activities throughout the year. The 1969 Home- coming, with the slogan Panthers are Dispos- able , began with the coronation of Nancy Cook who presided over the three day period of festiv- ities, along with her court consisting of Nancy Boardman. Pat Jonas, Corrine Lalvlone, and Terry Nelson. Those Great Procrastinators. Following the pep fest on Friday afternoon, the traditional parade made its way through the South Grove area. Cltts been said that many band members are still feeling the ill effects of that marchlb lt was a beautiful night for the game, yet an unfortunate night for our Simley Spartans as we were defeated by Lakeville 14-O. One always feels badly when his home team loses, yet when a Homecoming is lost, this is something felt very strongly by everyone. The festivities were brought to a close by the Home- coming dance on Saturday evening. Here, Nan- cy danced the Queens Dance. When all had left - the 1969 Homecoming became merely a memory. The new Queen is Nancy Cook! A joyous time for a deserving queen. Little Judy Atkins proudly presents the roses to our Queen. . Friends - The Most Valuable Possession Nancy is warmly congratulated by three generations of fellow cheerleaders. 33 THE QUEEN'S ATTENDANTS Nancy Boardman Corrinne LaMone X if CH . 44 ,W 5 Pat Jonas Terry Nelson 34 ll Gary, will you ever learn to hold yourself together? There is something very special about a Homecoming football game which seems to set it apart from any other. This is the game that carries a strange attrac- tion to alumni -this is the game that most often brings a sense of sadness to the hearts of the seniors, who are well aware that this is their last Homecoming at Simley. On this evening, the sky became a heaven of color as hundreds of balloons were released at the opening kick-off. Although we were unsuccessful in defeating Lakeville, October 10th, 1969 is a night that many will neverforget. Roger resorts to 'prayer power' yet the opposing team still finds him irresistible. Debbie Deering The Ballad 0fBarbara Allen lf you do that at the performance, vve'll kill you! Such a phrase as this could be heard throughout the many rehearsals of Dark Of The Moon, the 1970 fall play. An old version of a modern day theme is present- ed as a witch boy and a human girl are plagued bythe corrupt influence of each ovvns' kind. The jealousy and hatred present in society eventually leads to the death of Barbara Allen. The tensions of opening night, the mad scurry for cos- tumes andthe overall bevvilderment of the actors are all part of the many memories one holds when partici- pating in such a production. Play participation has always involved numerous hours of work and concen- tration on the part of the entire cast, yet when the fi- nal curtain closes at that last performance, a feeling of sadness fills the hearts of all involved. Those lines will never be said again. The costumes are vvorn for the last time. The play novv, is merely a memory. Behind the Scenes 37 Love with the proper witch CHRISTMAS CONCERT A Dream of Peace There is something about a Christmas concert that can not help but make one feel the warm sensation of togetherness. A dream of peace fills the hearts of all those truly involved - be they a participant or merely an observer viewing the scene from the audience. This year, the concert was performed souly by the Senior Band and Choir. The band began the evening with A Christmas Festival , followed with two ensembles, and closed with the Messiah Overture . The first piece, in particular, brought to the listener strong emotions filled with hope in mankind. The choir portion fol- lowed with an informal gathering on stage for a num- ber of light-hearted carols. After a maddening rush for gowns, the scene turned to one of solemnity as the choir sang a number of Christmas hymns. The Christ- mas concert is one in which all involved enjoy working on, when the turn out is large, as this years was, the evening seems all the more meaningful. The choir concludes the concert with a series of moving pieces. The choir presents a new look at performing with this informal caroling, .,,..---any A stubborn zipper and a helping hand gives the performance its' traditional feeling of good will. if if Members frantically look for gowns. This show is sponsored each year by the Student Council with proceeds being given to aid our American Foreign Service Program. Acts were wide and varying with original and often times eye opening between act skits which seemed to dominate the scene. The show this year contained fifteen acts, four of which were performances given by AFS students from neighboring schools. A sincere note of thanks goes to lVlr. Luebke, Nlr. Green and lVlr. Wallin for their hard work toward the production of this successful show. The cast and chorus line opened the show with Another Opening Another Show 40 i I i The closertneygot the bettertneylooked? The play, under the direction of lVlr. Loiell Dyrud, was performed on the night of Feb. 12th after a great many hours was spent in preparation tor the opening curtain. This production, while familiar to some, was new to the majority of students. For those who could appreciate its' messages, it most certainly proved to be a mean- ingful production. As typical of every council of every year, this council was confronted with student opposition and disagreements with the School Board's policies. These problems, however, were handled tactfully and the year, in general, was a productive one. Sofia Amador, our Foreign Exchange Student, was elected as an honorary member. Under the guidance of their advisor, lVlr. Luebke, they spon- sored our three day Homecoming and The Sno-Daze week. The Council has served as chief speaker for the stu- dent body. With the many controversial issues present in our schools today, we should appreciate the efforts put forth by this Council and the determined efforts of Bruce Rech in working toward the betterment of our school. Johnson, they worked not only on regular activities, but also controlled the individual classes. Under this system each class chose more stu- dent council representatives than last year, and no class officers. ln this way each class works through the council in planningtheir activities. This year they worked hard to shovv that the Junior High had the ability to make good use ot the student council. While proving this, they also developed into a group earningthe title, Biggest and Best. JR HIGH STUDENT COUNCIL SEATED L Hanson A Her- A. Estuesta, A. Wedell, T. Miklya, C. VanSomeren, M. Organizations The introduction, the performance, and the given applause are often the only acts wit- nessed by those not partaking in the Senior Band or Choir. Participation at varsity games, marching on the field, concert per- formances, and of course, Mr. Green's memo- rable line - All right, line 19 are all phases of Band life that members will never forget. The student body could always depend on the band to support their school in all activities. While most during their fourth hour are filling their stomachs with food, some seventy-five Choir members are filling the air with music. This method allowed the advanced seventh and eighth grade students to play challenging music. Exclusive Organizations One ofthe most private and no doubt one ofthe proudest of our school organizations is the Thespian Club. Membership is exclusive and is granted to only those students who have worked on a number of thea- ter productions. Selection is based mainly on the director's recommendations, and initiation, is held in the spring. Marked with the traditional blue T on their hands, inductees dread the appearance of a vet- eran Thespian, whose option is to put the newcomer through all sorts of embarrassing situations. National Honor Society represents those students which are honored for their Leadership, Service, Scholarship and Character. At induction this year, our school was priviledged to have tor its' speaker a stu- dent from St. Paul Park. His overall message carried the idea ot the true value of being honored. As he re- flected to us, honor is merely that and nothing more if the four characteristics of an NHS member are not put to use only in society but in the classroom itself. THESPIANS: J. Mickelson, D. New Club The school year 1969-70 heralded a new office educa- tion program. lt is a program between the community and the school, which offers students a chance to experiment in their chosen career of office work. It is a means of making the school training more practical. The event that the club eagerly anticipated this year was the O.E. national convention held in Fort Worth, Texas. To finance this trip, the students sold assorted Christmas items, and in April sponsored a fashion show. Simley's first O.E. program was considered quite suc- cessful according to the students and their employers. Students participating in our first program are Vickie Burtyk, 3lVl Co., Mark Heinrich, 3lVl Co., Jackie Keeney, 3lVl Co., Kathy Roszak, Bob Carter Ford, Donna Runge, District79f199g Linda Rutske, Suburban Gas, lnc.g Kathy Shewchuk, BTU lVlix Co., Doris Hoekstra, Great North- ern Oil Co. The A.F.S. Talent Show proved, as always, to be a suc- cess. As every year, the F.T.A. sponsored their suc- cessful Carnival. Money is on the minds of those in F.H.A. as the main events were a booth at the carnival and the sale of popcorn balls. The Speech Club, under the direction of Mr. Murr, Mr. Randall, and Mr. lten, secured many individual recognitions. They are commended for their time and efforts. This year's seventh graders were an indus- trious class accomplishing much behind their presi- dent, Dan Coyle. Seventh grade is a time for many things but mostly it is a time for making friends, a time for fun, a time for growing, and a time of youth. There are fourteen mods in a day, and the class length in a certain subject can vary from day to day. This makes more work for the administration and the teachers in scheduling the classes, but it is a benefit to the students. If the experiment is successful, Simley may have the mod system for all grades in the future. The eighth graders held successful class parties, which were fun for those who attended. The eighth grade has much to look forward to in the future at Simley. Q. Besides all the ordinary school and after-school activities, there is one event that overshadows almost everything else - the Prom. The Class of '71 spends most of the time on preparations for the Prom. The chairman this year was Debbie Deering. She and many others worked hard to make money, iron out the little problems, and get everything ready. The Jr.-Sr. Prom, which was held in May, was a high point of the year. After all the excitement, the juniors can look forward to their senior year with a sigh of relief. ii f fsixliti 5'-: 9:22 i aff.. we wz tzmfss 2 if ,.iti... ,,.. ..:., D .,. There were times of play and work, victory and defeat, joy and sadness. Our class has also felt the pain of tragedy as two of our classmates, Glenn Boog and Richard Raymond, died unexpectedly before reaching their Senior year. Perhaps years from now, while watching a movie about high school students, we will remember with a laugh some of our many experiences. Senior Social, in particular, will never be forgotten. The novel Black Like lVle moved many into understanding the many problems our world faces today. Economy was introduced to our class this year. Among other things, we learned that our supply is not large enough for lVlr. Nlergens to own a Cadillac and the demand is not great enough for lVlr. Bot- temiller to get rid of his Rambler. The English class spent many weeks studying Chaucer, Shakespeare, and the novel The Catcher ln The Rye . The last of these enabled many to look more deeply into themselves. The years have been trying, often depressing, yet in the eyes of most, very rewarding. Time will pass and people will forget. Classmates will no longer have names, but will merely remain a memory, a face, or a voice heard somewhere long ago. lt is our hope that the class of 1970 will always be remembered by the people at Simley. This drunken bus driver CAFS Tal- ent Showb is the same young man who has, in the choir, remained a mountain in a prairie of flatness. He has sat with a full waste basket over his head and succeeded in lip-sinking the words to an entire Bill Cosby album. Something should surely tell us that after graduation, we will not have heard the last of Roger. If he continues to possess his outgoing nature, he will no doubt lead a very interesting lite. If you should ever look back into this annual in the future years and fail to remember this guy, remember him as the little guy with the full-grown mustache scurrying around the halls. His sense of humor is, if anything, unique in that he displays it at the least expectant of times. There is little to say about Arlin that most do not already know. lVlr. Without Ken's ability to make the rest of us see things in a humorous perspective, many of us would never have made it to our senior year. lt is truly people like Ken that make the people in this world look at themselves. Although his conversations are not always so humorous to his teachers, when speaking to Ken as an individual, he presents understanding, backed with a real feeling of concern. Ken's existence at Simley is not one that many in his class will ever forget. 117 Yolando Jaso Christine Johnson Ga ry Johnson Jane Johnson Randolph Johnson Patricia Jonas Diane Kanzenbach Jacalyn Keeney Gregory Kincade E yr' Janet Krecn Joan Krecn Joanne Krech John Krech Karen Krech Rickie Krech Susan Kreon Cindy Krone Corrine LaIVIone Janice Lathen Dennis Luskey Anthony lvlascaro Richard McAdams Valerie lVlcCluskey Jean Mickelson Steven Nliklya Marcia lVliller Marlislvliller Lawrence Nlrozinski Rehearsals were sometimes hard and long. ws 1 ig ,, ililfflfiil ' 5??5?li'235f? 7 V4 .ii 1f.,7ti55ggg -4, ,ivwf x :li IQSN' -7 fo iw ,-.ilk f, ft 4123251 V A y , Q he-in 'hr-., : H511 J ..a,g:q,E,. , ., . - Ii 23545-1.Qf'N fig? fu , 5' If, 151.5 '. 131335, i fi 1 ,, z 1 X - ,J M ,.,' -, xi 1, way 3, w, .5 Peggy Neisen Jayne Nelson Steven Nelson This page is dedicated to Peggy Neisen. Her life dream as quoted by the Sparta Journal is 'AAII I want is to be a cheerleader. Her dream was fulfilled and Peggy proved to be one of the most enthusiastic and exuberant cheerleaders on the squad. She once demonstrated her great amount of school en- thusiasm when at one time, she took a taxi to avoid missing a hockey game. Responsible for the sta rt of those jokes that make the rounds Peggy has room to laugh. The ability to laugh is a very won- derful quality that seems to be lacking in todays vvorld. Dan has showed tremendous leadership qualities, particularly in the areas where music is involved. His abilities in this field are well known to all. Dan has served as an accompanist for the Concert Choir and has also skillfully managed to take over Choir periods when lvlr. Wallin has not been available. He has also participated in the Concert Band as a Baritone player. His other accomplishments include: school plays, AFS Talent Shows, and membership in the National Honor Society. A talent such as Dan's is a very wonderful gift- especially when the posses- ser can share this gift with others. The annual staff wishes to take this opportunity to thank Sue for all her patience and understanding with her all-questioning staff. Sue tactfully handled some twelve unexperienced staff members, none of whom could have succeeded without her. She fully handled the responsibilities involved with being editor, pressing us on to meet every deadline. Her tasks were not always easy, but they were always completed. lt has now been proved that with a little bit of patience and a lot of guts, almost anything can be accomplished.
