U16 Seasvu is' Wrap-lip Simi High wrestling teams had a very successful season again in 1964- 1965. The Pioneer Grapplers asserted themselves as the Power in Ventura County and one of the top teams in the C. I. F. by winning their fourth con- secutive League Championship. The Pioneers have now won 30 consecutive league matches spanning a period of five years, The high point of the season was a thrilling 21-20 victory over the defending C. I. F. champions, Mira Costa. This victory was made possible through a fine team effort, and was preserved when Sophomore Heavyweight Tom Ellis refused to be pinned. A few weeks later, however, Simi saw a string of 25 straight victories ended by a well-balanced South Tor- rance squad. In the tournaments, the Pioneers placed second in the Cal Poly Invitational with Harley Williams, Dan Pry, and Don Blazej winning individual titles. In the Simi Invitational, a third place finish was featured by Gary Darling and Don Blazej. In the League Tournament, which Coach Goldblooms team captured for the fourth straight year with five individual champions: jim Zaferiou, Terry Phillips, Dan Pry, Don Blazej and Ken Morris. Phillips, Blazej, and Pry all won for the second time. Fifty-three schools, representing ten leagues, sent entries to the new Simi gymnasium for the C.I. F. Semi- finals. Four Simi wrestlers qualified for the finals-jim Zaferiou, Dan Pry, Bill Gleason and Don Blazej. Simi placed fifth in the C. I. F. Dan Pry was C. I. F. champion at 136 lbs. and Don Blazej placed third at 148 lbs. Zaferiou and Gleason finished fifth in their weights. The Pioneers' C. I. F. finish was hampered by the loss of three outstanding men-Harley Williams, Gary Darling, and Ken Morris. The outlook for next year is not as bright with only three lettermen returning: Gerald Brown, Terry Phillips, and jim Zaferiou. The junior Varsity team will send us some fine performers such as: Dave Reed 121- lj, Ted Hansen Q15-Oj, Oscar Will Q12-41, Dave Freymond Q9-35, Mike McGinn Q10-7j, Bob Hester, Q9-71, and Dave Robertson Q12-82.
