You are the second class that I have had the privilege to serve for four full years. From the time you entered high school in September, 1985, the Class of 1989 has con- tinually demonstrated a determination to succeed in ac- ademics, athletics, and in many other areas. No class in my tenure has ever received the number of early ac- ceptances to colleges and universities as has the Class of 1989. Never before have members of a class dis- tinguished themselves so admirably through their per- formance on standardized examinations, and in aca- demic competitions. The skill level observed in class- mates training in occupational and vocational programs is of a high caliber. Success of our athletic teams, led by members of the Class of 1 989, has led to a State Soccer Championship, and to an overall level of excellence in all sports activities during the 1988-1989 school year. As I reminisce about the Class of 1 989, 1 am compelled to recall the words of poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow who wrote in, The Ladder of Saint Augustine The heights by great men reached and kept Were not attained by sudden flight, But they, while their companions slept, Were tolling upward in the night Achievement has been your mark for four years, and your principal sincerely hopes that your continued work will lead you to still greater achievements in your future endeavors. To The Class of 1989: This class, similar to the classes. before you and those classes who will succeed you, has experienced a diversity of situations that have broadened your grasp of what learning is all about. It is our desire that the formal years of educa- tion you have received at Silver Lake Regional School District will serve as a foundation for what lies ahead for each of you. Your ability to think, to analyze, to synthesize and to be creative in your future endeavors will be realized when specific situations are placed before you. It will be at that point in time that you will appreciate these and most recent experi- ences. Most likely, you will make reference to these times, as the good old days. My message to the Class of 1 989 is a brief one; live each day as if it were your last, do not delay until tomorrow what can be done today and appreciate what you now have because it may not be available in the future. My personal best wishes to all members of the graduating Class of 1989. Sincerely, . Paul A. Squarcia, Ed.D. Superintendent of Schools TO THE MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF 1 989 In the fall of 1985, you entered Silver Lake Regional High School as untested adolescents. During your high school experience, educators have endeavored to increase your knowledge and strengthen your ideals. Hopefully, we have prepared you to begin your life as a contributing adult. Therefore, take what you have learned and put it to good use. Use it to seize new op- portunities with confidence. Use it now and throughout your life, as you confront respon- sibilities and demands. Always use this knowl- edge to the best of your ability. My congratulations and best wishes to each member of the Class of 1989. T?7„ Cic , John J. Aherne Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Education
