Each year the graduating class has had as a re- membrance of their high school years a yearbook that captures briefly their involvement within the Sil- ver Lake School community. This recapitulation is reflective upon life in general since many members of the class have greatly contrib- uted to their own growth and development while others have been less than enthusiastic about their contributions. Your benefit from an activity is related to the same degree that your efforts reflect your commitment to that activity. Thus, it is our hope that you have come to the realization that you are the key to the improve- ment of life. It is you who must begin to be the decision makers of today and the leaders of tomorrow. It is you who must be concerned about the proliferation of nuclear arms, destruction of our ecology, and the scarcity of our fresh water. The greatest obstacle to growth and development, to learning, and to improving life is the question of self-doubt and the questioning of ones own ability. It has been our goal at Silver Lake Regional School District that we discipline rather than furnish the mind, to develop logical thinking and to use its own powers, rather than have you accumulate a store- house of irrelevant facts. To this end, it is our hope that we have provided to those of you who have bene- fited from our service an opportunity that will be the foundation for your life ahead of you. To others who have not been as insightful, it is not too late to pursue with vigor your interest and skills that will enable you individually and society as a whole to be the benefactors of your efforts. May I extend to each member of the graduating Class of 1983 my congratulations and best wishes. Paul A. Squarcia Superintendent of Schools u Robert J. Cunniff 4 Director of Secondary Education ..7 Paul A. Squarcia ' Superintendent of Schools TO THE CLASS OF 1983 Your commencement is not an end but a beginning. You are embarking on a voyage, in that your Silver Lake Regional High School education was but a point of departure. It is my hope that you continue to gain knowledge and experience in life, and use these acquisitions for the betterment of your community and nation. The very best wishes to the Class of 1983. We've Only Just Begun We've only just begun to live, White lace and promises A kiss for luck and we're on our way. Before the rising sun we fly, So many roads to choose We start out walking and learn to run. And when the evening comes we smile, So much of life ahead We'll find a place where there's room to grow, And yes, We've Just Begun. Sharing horizons that are new to us, Watching the signs along the way, Talking it over just the two of us, Working together day to day, together. Paul Williams DEDICATION By tradition, every yearbook is dedicated to an outstanding individual that the senior class feels especially close to. This year, the 1983 Torch editors felt very strongly about two such outstanding individuals. Mr. Rock, for his many years of devotion and dedication to the Silver Lake students. Mr. Rock, We will miss you upon your retirement. Mr. Aherne, for his support and attention to Silver Lake students and particularly for his interest in the Class of 1983. Mr. Aherne, What did we do when you weren't here? It is therefore with great plea- sure and admiration that we, the Class of 1983, dedicate this yearbook to both Mr. John Rock and Mr. John Aherne. We wish you both the best of luck on your new beginnings. 3
