This year the yearbook staff had a hard time deciding how to describe the class of 1983 because our class does not fit a general classification. Each member of the class is very different from all the others. It was sug- gested that we set our theme on the uniqueness of the individuals in our class with the theme Piece by Piece. We see the class of 1983 as a large puzzle in which each person is one piece. Each piece of the puzzle is different but when put together they will form a picture of uniqueness that is different from any other class in the history of Silver Lake Regional High School. Special Messages page 2 We've Only Just Begun We've only just begun to live, White lace and promises A kiss for luck and we're on our way. Before the rising sun we fly, So many roads to choose We start out walking and learn to run. And when the evening comes we smile, So much of life ahead We'll find a place where there's room to grow, And yes, We've Just Begun. Sharing horizons that are new to us, Watching the signs along the way, Talking it over just the two of us, Working together day to day, together. Paul Williams DEDICATION By tradition, every yearbook is dedicated to an outstanding individual that the senior class feels especially close to. This year, the 1983 Torch editors felt very strongly about two such outstanding individuals. Mr. Rock, for his many years of devotion and dedication to the Silver Lake students. Mr. Rock, We will miss you upon your retirement. Mr. Aherne, for his support and attention to Silver Lake students and particularly for his interest in the Class of 1983. Mr. Aherne, What did we do when you weren't here? It is therefore with great plea- sure and admiration that we, the Class of 1983, dedicate this yearbook to both Mr. John Rock and Mr. John Aherne. We wish you both the best of luck on your new beginnings. 3 Each year the graduating class has had as a re- membrance of their high school years a yearbook that captures briefly their involvement within the Sil- ver Lake School community. This recapitulation is reflective upon life in general since many members of the class have greatly contrib- uted to their own growth and development while others have been less than enthusiastic about their contributions. Your benefit from an activity is related to the same degree that your efforts reflect your commitment to that activity. Thus, it is our hope that you have come to the realization that you are the key to the improve- ment of life. It is you who must begin to be the decision makers of today and the leaders of tomorrow. It is you who must be concerned about the proliferation of nuclear arms, destruction of our ecology, and the scarcity of our fresh water. The greatest obstacle to growth and development, to learning, and to improving life is the question of self-doubt and the questioning of ones own ability. It has been our goal at Silver Lake Regional School District that we discipline rather than furnish the mind, to develop logical thinking and to use its own powers, rather than have you accumulate a store- house of irrelevant facts. To this end, it is our hope that we have provided to those of you who have bene- fited from our service an opportunity that will be the foundation for your life ahead of you. To others who have not been as insightful, it is not too late to pursue with vigor your interest and skills that will enable you individually and society as a whole to be the benefactors of your efforts. May I extend to each member of the graduating Class of 1983 my congratulations and best wishes. Paul A. Squarcia Superintendent of Schools u Robert J. Cunniff 4 Director of Secondary Education ..7 Paul A. Squarcia ' Superintendent of Schools TO THE CLASS OF 1983 Your commencement is not an end but a beginning. You are embarking on a voyage, in that your Silver Lake Regional High School education was but a point of departure. It is my hope that you continue to gain knowledge and experience in life, and use these acquisitions for the betterment of your community and nation. The very best wishes to the Class of 1983. Even though the team had many downfalls, such as the loss of home ice at Hobomock Arena and injuries, they still proved to be a strong skating force by breaking twojinxs, one at Randolph and the other by winning the lst tournament game. The team was notorious for the well known abilities of captains Kevin Stevens, Scott McKee, Walter Pratt and John Hurley, as well as seniors Sean Keane and Bill Foley. Led by senior captain Caron Ahearn, the Lakers relied heavily on their improved team speed and quickness both on offense and defense. Key players were juniors Priscilla Cubie. Susan Budak, Deidre Kennedy and Linda Nali as well as many sophomore players. The Lakers met the challenge of the tough Old Colony League schedule and finished the season with a very fine 13 wins and 4 losses. The second place league finish enabled the girls to qualify for post-season tournament play for the third time in the school's history. Very competitive and exciting to watch, the team, featuring I0 juniors, figures to be very experi- enced and ready to play next sea- son. With Chris Mosher, Gary Kehoe, Jeff Ryan and Scott Plausse. coach Dick Arieta noted that 'we'll have a fine front court for next year. With Tom Rice, Phil Doyle and Rob Vickers we'll have good stability in our backcourt as well. Two players who switched back and forth between the subvarsity and varsity teams, - Keith Gauley and Rob Costell - should also see a lot of action next season. This year we had the best ability and balance in several years. The important part ofthe season was the cohesiveness of the team. We all started this year as novices, and in the process of learning the editors and staff have produced a yearbook of which you will be proud. A yearbook does not just come togetherg it is produced by many hours of hard, often tedious work. The class of 1983 should consider themselves lucky to have had such dedicated editors. A Scottish invasion took place in ourjunior year. Two fun filled weeks brought us bag pipes, kilts. and a tearful good- bye. Three memorable months of our senior year were shared with our Mexican friends. They bridged the gap between our country and theirs, and for that, they shall remain in our hearts. Through these experiences we learned more than any book or filmstrip could ever teach us. To the Class, may he be a symbol of goodness and lasting love. We pray his death is not in vain. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Shire Something SPECIAL To the Class of 1983 Thank you for selecting STUDIO ONE of Plymouth as your PERSONAL SENIOR PHOTOGRAPHER. Through the years, we have had the distinct pleasure of working with many of you by supporting your efforts in making Silver Lake Regional High School a place of pride and fellowship. As the years pass, you will find the memories of Silver Lake a source of joy to draw upon. Close friends, class- mates, teachers, principals, staff members, parents, and all ofthe people that make up the halls ofthe school, will be long remembered by you, as the echoes of your voices dim. Memories that you may forget will come rushing back to mind as you glance across the pages of your yearbook and the photographs therein will remind you of the good times you all shared. In the coming years, we hope that you will call upon us to record those moments in your life which deserve profession- al photographic attention. As your future dreams become a reality, think of us often for we record the GOOD TIMES in your life. Sincerely, Loren and Barbara St. Onge am bw PHOTOGRAPHERS Congratulations to the class of 1983 From the photographer who makes people happy with themselves. 206 Washington Street J.
