Dedication Dedication, character, integrity, loyalty, commitment are qualities found in very few people. Yet these very high ideals describe Mr. Hardie Pierce, for he exemplified them every day of his life. He not only maintained these standards, but encouraged his students and players to develop them as well, in a constant effort to urge others to improve themselves. Mr. Pierce was proud of being a teacher and a coach and deeply loved his family, school and community.'Futhermore, in the words of colleague Martha Christian, he reminded us that there were people not intimidated by power, people undaunted by ridicule. Finally, Mr. Pierce personified the word gentleman to the end. On behalf of the class of 1980, as well as all who knew and loved him, the 1980 TORCH is dedicated to the memory of Mr. Hardie Pierce. To-day, the road all players come, Shoulder-high we bring you home, And set you at your' threshold down, It withers quicker than the rose. Eyes the shady night has shut Cannot see the record cut, And silence sounds no worse than cheers After earth has stopped the ears: So set, before its echoes fade, The fleet foot on the sill of shade, And hold to the low lintel up The still-defended challenge-cup. And round that early-laureled head Will flock to gaze the strengthless dead, And find unwithered on its curls - The garland briefer than a girl's. lln part from: A. E. Housmanl 30 Paul Cuneo Scott T. We learned to love. We learned to cry. We learned about love As the years flew by. We shared our dreams one by one Making plans what must be done They did their best. We'll not forget. Confident we'll take our walk Up the stairs and shake that hand Then wave good-bye. But a tear will come Oh, yes, we protested Though deep inside we loved those days NOW is what counts, The future is HERE. Julie LeMoine Never say maybe when the answer's no. Never say die when there's still time to go. Never say hate 'cause love is the way, And never give up, There'll be another day. Never hang on to something that's not 'cause the past ain't the only thing you've got. Never say it's easy 'cause you know that's a lie. lt's never easy to say goodbye. Brenda McGrath The time has come for us to go, We leave this place where we grew, We depart from a world that is old, And venture into a world that is new. We will lead our lives, We will go our own ways, We may lose our old ties, But new friends will be made. Some will live with a flair, Some will lead their lives with zest, And some will live without a care, But we'll live our lives to the best. The class of '80 may never meet again, Our paths may never cross, But we'll remember these years and what we've gained, And we'll long for what we've lost. DP: like may 4-if ' 4 2 jf-1-.f4 '1 1979 was considered by many around the OCL as the rebuilding year for Silver Lake softball after losing such stalwart players as Pam Joyce, Diane Benson, Annette Lopes and Cindy Saunders to graduation. The season was highlighted by some fine individual performances from Michele Agnew, who posted a 14-2 pitching record with a 0.96 earned-run-average of .650 and .637 by Terri Galley and Paula Joyce respectively, and an outstanding defensive year by Fran O'Donoghue, who made just one error at third base after 16 the previous year. Perhaps the most exciting moments from the season were our three wins over Marshfield, winning 2-1 at home, 6-1 at Marshfield, then winning 4-2 in the longest tournament game Q14-inningsl on record in the State Tourney. ' The real key to the season was the closeness of the team members, the family philosophy exhibited by all and the overall superior rapport developed between the players and the coaching staff. We can only look forward to bigger and better things in 1980 with all players returning. lJ. They were successful against Bridgewater-Raynham, Rockland, Hanson, and Randolph and placed 7th in the league. The number of matches played per meet with each school increased from three singles and two doubles to five singles and two doubles. This allowed more girls to play. Sue lVlcGah'igan was the outstanding singles player with the most wins for the season, and Karen Deschenes was the most-feared and respected of our doubles teams. Enthusiasm was also high among the junior varsity members who met and played their intramural matches faithfully and did an incredible job while filling in for missing regulars. Karen Kroon was our outstanding junior varsity player. lA. Crothersl 122 row 1 ll. to r.l - J. McHale, S. Minelli, K. Fiske, M. Sweeney, C. Batchelder, F. White, row 2 - C. Scazi, B. Fitzgerald, J. This year's field hockey team established a record in the history of field hockey at Silver Lake. lt completed an undefeated and unscored-upon season by acquiring the Old Colony League Championship for the second consecutive year and by advancing as far as the semi-finals of the Southern Mass. State Tournament, where the team was defeated by Canton, O-1. The Old Colony League record was nearly perfect at 1 1-O-1, the tie being with Scituate. The overall record was 13-1-1 . Although it is important to win with modesty, it is equally as important to lose with pride which, in both cases, the girls displayed well. Factors which attributed to the success of the team's season included dedication, effort, teamwork, and the ability to learn from an outstanding coach. r nigh 1 -sly G Y . ts. sw 4 , , Sana! 3 -- I W ,,' J - , smears sw .mmasa Q! ici . - .4 :'?S ' is 't fuss: K Q. 1 ras .:55.
