EDITOR ' S Front L-R: Barbara Sewall (Layout Editor), Nancy Brooks (Art Editor), Peter Sirrico (Sports Editor), Debbie Cobb (Art Editor), Kathy Tkaczuk (Layout Editor). Back L-R: Jim Wallace (Business Editor), Jeanette Lopes (Layout Editor), Jean Axford (Editor-in-Chief), Patti Finney (Assistant Editor-in- Chief), Mary Fogarty (Business Editor), Tom Girouard (Sports Editor). Each year the editor of our Torch writes of the pressures and problems involved in putting a yearbook together. The Torch ' 17 staff has had its share of last minute layouts and deadlines, along with trying to keep our book unified. Our class is the first to graduate from two different campuses. We realized that our task wouldn ' t be easy but we ' ve done our best to devise a book that represents our class as a whole, regardless of the obvious separations. We extend our most sincere thanks to Mr. Govoni, Mrs. Churchill, Mr. Bennett, Mr. Depoto, and our photographers from Dodge-Murphy, without whose time and effort our ideas could not have been executed. Jean Axford, Editor-in-Chief WE WOULD LIKE TO REMEMBER . . . MELODY NILSON LOOK TO THIS DAY For it is Life The very life of life. In its brief course lies all the verities and realities of existence, the bliss of grov th, the splender of action, the glory of povy er. For yesterday is but a dream, and tomorrow is only a vision But today, well lived, makes every yesterday a dream of happiness, and every tomorrow a vision of hope. Look well, therefore, to this day. In Memory of James Linehan DEDICATION Donald Randall, a lep.end in his own time, friend, teacher, entertainer and educator . . . As students we meet a p.reat many teachers, each with his own style, varying in manv aspects, but for most of us a teacher such as Mr. Randall comes but once in a lifetime. We remember him for his wit in class, the way he can nike a theorem seem interesting, and also for his dedication to his ideals and to better educa- tion. As his students recall him His zest for life is unreal. In teaching he used his own style. He would yell, he would stomp, he would dance, he would sing. And be teaching you Math all the while. Of angles and planes he would lecture. In bearskin coats he would muffle. Ceometrv ' s easily forgotten, of course, But remember The Halifax Shuffle. ' ' His character sure is amazing. His wit is the sharpest around. For the theorems and laws of geometry ' s scope. Never met with an expert so sound. -J.C. For all the fun, all the hours of enjoyable classtime, the ideals fondly instilled, we, the class of 77, dedicate our yearbook to Mr. Randall, whom we knov7 will live on and on long after we ' ve gone. -J. Principal ' s Message The Torch is a living monument to the stress that is placed on the individual at Silver Lake. Your yearbook staff has designed this book to help you remember the excellent opportunities afforded you, the student. Silver Lake is now a two-campus facility . It is your school. It is what you want it to be. The course offerings and the extra-curricular programs are developed and planned to meet your individual needs. I extend to the Class of ' 77 a sincere note of congratulation. May you always reflect your educational background in all of your future endeavors. Thank you. Sincerely, Albert F. Right now, looking into my mind, I think this is the me you ' ll find; Perhaps a leader in the world of science, or frustrated with a new appliance. Delving into fields unknown, or sewing socks as yet unsewn. Finding a cure for a strange disease, or scrubbing floors on my hands and knees. An actress who is loved by all, or glad that Junior hit the ball. Marching in a protest riot, or thankful that the kids are quiet. The author of a best selling book, or teaching my daughter how to cook. An art- ist of world renown, or making sure the hamburg weighs a pound. Researching a miracle drug, or beating the dirt from the rug. Helping people in times of strife, or learning to be a better wife. A scientist working aboard Calypso, or kissing a tiny stubbed and hurt- ing toe. Acclaimed as a great scupltor, or selling Avon door to door. An archaeologist digging lost cities, or giving away the largest litter of kitties. Wealthy, with more than one racy car, or putting preserves into a jar. Exploring and documenting the mysterious sea, or helping to decorate the Christmas tree. Maybe I ' ll get to do them all, that certainly would be a ball. Well, wherever I do happen to be, I ' ll be, living and loving and being me. DGB Beneath the waves there are many dominions yet to be visited and kingdoms to be discovered, and he who venturously brings up from the abyss enough of their inhabitants to display the physiognomy of the country, will taste that cup of delight, the sweetness of whose draught only those who have made a discovery know. Edward Forbes, Natural History of European Seas, 1859 ou may give them your love but not your thoughts, for they have their own thoughts. You may house their bodies but not their souls, for their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams. You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them liKe you. For life goes not back- ward nor tarries with yesterday. You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth 1 Tomorrow ' s dream is not my dream: It comes too late and I can ' t wait. Lyn .«? Friends. . . Happy, sad laughter, tears More than just a pretty face Honest, trusting Friends. . . Lyn Mama won ' t let you go hungrylll Lyn Three passions simple, but overwhelmingly strong have governed my life; the longing for love; the search for know- ledge; and unbearable pity of the suffering of mankind. Bertrand Russell Humor is the saving sense: If I did not laugh I would die Lyn And when I die don ' t shed a tear. The world will know That I ' ve been here.
