9CH00L COMMITTEE The principle of investing the control of the public schools in a group of locally elected officials has evolved in Massachusetts from early colonial times to the present day. The towns of our Common- wealth enjoy only those powers delegated to them by the state, and school committees are the instruments by which the legislature fulfills its obligation to education. The Silver Lake Regional School District Committee is comprised of eleven members, some of whom are elected directly by each of the four towns, and some of whom are appointed by the town school committees. As the chief policy-making body for the school, the Committee must approve all staff appointments, as well as courses of study. It must prepare an annual operational and construction budget. Regular meetings are held twice a month; however, the members meet much more often in several smaller sub-committees to prepare detailed reports for Committee action. Faced with increasing demands on their time due to the complexity of a growing school system, the Committee members continue to be motivated solely by a genuine interest in the students and the school. I wish to take this opportunity of thanking the members of the committee for their many hours of service to the youth of the district. Each of us takes a sincere pride in the successes and achievements of the students, no matter what the field of endeavor. We only regret that we cannot express more personally to each of you our con- gratulations ; we extend to the graduates our best wishes for the future. Benjamin Conant B 1 i i §i MR. OFFICE OF THE SUPERINTENDENT The 1968 graduate faces a new dimension in dealing with the problems of our nation and the world. The right to dissent has been extended by some to include the right to refuse to serve our country in time of war or national emergency — also the right to violate any law which might seem to present an obstacle in the drive to secure equal treatment for minority groups. It is important to the future of our democratic form of government that you, our future citizens, clarify in your minds the issues at stake. Duty to flag and country, protection of rights and property of all citizens and respect for the democratic process- es are only a few of these issues. No nation can survive without respect for law and order. May the graduates of 1968 be blessed with the wisdom to make the distinction between the two components of true freedom, your rights and your responsibilities. Francis F. Moran MR. FRANCIS F.
