Gang ... a familiar sound streaming from room 105 ... a scarlet face at times of anger . . . Asper gum . . . 21 4 points off a final mark when homework wasn ' t done . . . brisk walk, brief- case swinging, coattails flying . . . We who were fated to be his homeroom students secretly appreciated the absolute quiet after the morning bell — we could actually hear the morning announcements! Those of us who were fortunate enough to be his classroom students will never forget those hours of work on practice sets, or the difference between debits and credits. As Coach of the Junior Varsity basketball team, he was seen at the games: — sitting, standing, en- couraging, worrying, yelling . . . and sometimes even smiling. His warm and impressive personality has been conveyed to his students through a friendly class- room atmosphere. Happily, the class of 1968 dedi- cates its Torch to MR. ' RONiRLO FRLLOM fAMlCOmfS There 0 are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it. As our class has passed through Silver Lake, each of us has strived to be a special candle. We didn ' t want to be just our parents ' children or our teachers ' students; we wanted to be ourselves. In our efforts, we have sometimes confused such words as individuality and nonconformity with cool or hip. Then we became mirrors. As we now step into the future, we must remember to be candles which spread their own light. We, the editors, want The Torch to be the mirror that reflects all the shining, hopeful, ever-spreading light of life at Silver Lake. We hope the yearbook will be the image of our high school experiences and endeavors and a means of remerfibering them for many years to come. Jeffrey once had the audacity to say that if the Yearbook Staff were being graded on effort, he would be given five stars while the rest of us would receive only one. Truthfully, he does deserve credit. But if Jeff is to be the Five Star General, then we must call Miss Margeson the Commander-in-Chief, for she has been the invaluable organizer and advisor to this yearbook. Edmund has been the Captain of his very own ship, the sports section. Single-handedly he has composed one fifth of the book. Celia has been the bomber pilot who has fought unceasingly in the battles of the deadlines. We give her a Bronze Star for service above and beyond the call of duty. Under the direction of Mr. Fallon, Rollene and Frank have worked on the homefront, raising the money to finance The Torch. Our typists, the Marines, have always been ready to serve when needed. After a six month struggle to put out a superior yearbook, we editors have the privilege of signing the peace treaty and taking credit for the great job our team has done. And so, now, we say, Thanks, to those noble warriors who have met the challenge of The Torch, 1968. WoudL qrasptdL 9CH00L COMMITTEE The principle of investing the control of the public schools in a group of locally elected officials has evolved in Massachusetts from early colonial times to the present day. The towns of our Common- wealth enjoy only those powers delegated to them by the state, and school committees are the instruments by which the legislature fulfills its obligation to education. The Silver Lake Regional School District Committee is comprised of eleven members, some of whom are elected directly by each of the four towns, and some of whom are appointed by the town school committees. As the chief policy-making body for the school, the Committee must approve all staff appointments, as well as courses of study. It must prepare an annual operational and construction budget. Regular meetings are held twice a month; however, the members meet much more often in several smaller sub-committees to prepare detailed reports for Committee action. Faced with increasing demands on their time due to the complexity of a growing school system, the Committee members continue to be motivated solely by a genuine interest in the students and the school. I wish to take this opportunity of thanking the members of the committee for their many hours of service to the youth of the district. Each of us takes a sincere pride in the successes and achievements of the students, no matter what the field of endeavor. We only regret that we cannot express more personally to each of you our con- gratulations ; we extend to the graduates our best wishes for the future. Benjamin Conant B 1 i i §i MR. BENJAMIN CONANT CHAIRMAN [rs. Jacqueline Ormsbee, Mr. Amelio Ruffini, Mr. Thomas F. Weathers, Mr. Charles F. Batchelder, Vice-chairman, Mr. Benjamin Conant, Chairman, Mr. George W. ushman, Secretary-Treasurer, Mr. Bowman C. Wingard, Mrs. Virginia M. Crosby, Mr. Robert Rigel, Mr. Lawrence B. Westgate. OFFICE OF THE SUPERINTENDENT The 1968 graduate faces a new dimension in dealing with the problems of our nation and the world. The right to dissent has been extended by some to include the right to refuse to serve our country in time of war or national emergency — also the right to violate any law which might seem to present an obstacle in the drive to secure equal treatment for minority groups. It is important to the future of our democratic form of government that you, our future citizens, clarify in your minds the issues at stake. Duty to flag and country, protection of rights and property of all citizens and respect for the democratic process- es are only a few of these issues. No nation can survive without respect for law and order. May the graduates of 1968 be blessed with the wisdom to make the distinction between the two components of true freedom, your rights and your responsibilities. Francis F. Moran MR. FRANCIS F. MORAN SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS MR. JOHN MALONEY ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS MR. JOHN J. ROCK ACTING PRINCIPAL Providence College, Ph.B. Bridgewater State College, M.Ed. To the Class of 1968: To each of you go best wishes for success and happiness in what- ever field of endeavor you may choose. This moment of your life is not an end, but rather a be- ginning. That which you have com- pleted is but a start, a preparation, for what should be a successful and rewarding life. What you do with what you have gained will be a decision that only you can make. You may take the initiative to lead or you may join the unknown thousands who merely follow. The decision is yours. Your class has selected from the writings of Edith Wharton the fol- lowing words as an inspiration: There are two ways of spread- ing light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it. Will you, then, ignite your fel- low men with sound ideas and ideals, or will you go along with the crowd? This is the challenge; the decision is yours. Sincerely, John J. Rock Acting Principal MR. I . w CLA99 HI9T0RY Thinking back now our four high school years have gone by fast, just as everyone had predicted. As with all beginning high school students, freshman year was a new experience with new activities, such as electing class officers. Roger Holmes was elected our freshman President; Phil Nardozzi, Vice President; Gail Whittaker, Secretary; Jean Morris, Treasurer; and Betty Jo Nava, Historian, with advisors, Mrs. Donovan and Mr. Daunheimer. We had our first big dance, the L.H.U. The full title was kept a secret until the night of the dance when it was divulged as Lively Hearts Unanimous. Annette SpaUuzzi was chosen queen of the L.H.U. Our advisors, Mrs. Mulliken and Mr. Wallace Weeks, led us into our sophomore year with the help of President Roger Ladd, Vice President Ann Giammarco, Secretary Jayne Hamilton, Treasurer Renee Dandeneau, and Historian Betty Jo Nava. That year St. Patrick ' s Day was the theme of our successful dance. Sophomore was more than just a title; now there were more assemblies and a reserved space for us at pep rallies. Junior year proved to be the beginning of the busiest half of our high school career. The first order of business was to elect class officers. Roger Ladd was President; Jayne Hamilton, Vice President; Ann Giammarco, Secretary; Renee Dandeneau, Treasurer; and Betty- Jo Nava, Historian. Members of the executive council were Rollene Pimental, Annette Spalluzzi, Marsha Batchelor, Nancy Maarschalk, Leigh Creighton, Don Reed, and Roger Holmes. Miss Gillis and Mr. Kaupp were our advisors. The major event of our junior year and that which we will remember the most was the Junior Prom, Midnight in Manhattan. Our very ordinary-looking gym was given a complete transformation and really did give the impression of the New York island, for it was packed with flowers, trees lining the park- way, and a fountain, donated by Puritan Clothing Company, in the center. Manhattan ' s skyline surrounded the dancers. After the Grand March, the queen and her court were chosen. Jeffrey Rice escorted a very happy Queen Susan Rohr to her throne, where she was surrounded by her court: Kathy Nogueira, Linda Chupaila, Brenda Winchester, Lisa Pimental, Betty-Jo Nava, and Rosemary Carson. As a closing to a wonderful evening, we dined at Burt ' s in Plymouth. President Roger Ladd, Vice President Jayne Hamilton, Secretary Ann Giammarco, Treasurer Renee Dandeneau, and Historian Betty-Jo Nava led us through our final year at Silver Lake. The executive council, aiding wher- ever possible, consisted of: Bev Wright, Marsha Batchelor. Rollene Pemental. Annette Spalluzzi, Ellen Hatch, Leigh Creighton, Frank Miglierini, and Jim Walsh with advisors Miss Dennett, Mr. Parks, and Mr. Ward. We began the year with the Seniors ' traditional money-maker, the Senior Class Play. Two superb performances of Agatha Christie ' s The Spider ' s Web were given on Friday, November 17, and Saturday, November 18, 1967. Ronnie Pierce, our student director, finally pushed us into the swing of things a week before the performances with his constant On stage! , and Mrs. Sim- mons, our advisor, arranged and rearranged all problem aspects of the production. This was the year we needed advice the most. Colleges had to be chosen, applications had to be filled out and the waiting had to be endured. Somehow we have survived, and now look back at the many memories, the small in- cidents which, combined, formed the edifice of our high school life. How- ever far away we travel, the class of 1968 thanks a great high school. Silver Lake Regional. w mmt cuss ANN CRONIN GIAMMARCO SECRETARY Kingston ... It was a perfectly marvelous success and how I wish you could have witnessed all the minor aspects of the show that made it so. We recounted the murder of one Mr. Oliver Costello and made it clear to the audience that poor, harried Mrs. Hailsham- Brown had absolutely no connection whatsoever with the shocking business (although I myself was somewhat skeptical at first). And the Inspector ' s interrogation was 50 ghastly. Indeed, murders would be ever so neat if only Scotland Yard would not involve itself. I dare say, though, I felt a little sorry for the dear old gent. By the time he was through with Mrs. H-B., whose stories often tend to be quite misleading, our staunch Inspector was quite shakey, and I ' m afraid he had a hard time coping, although we all know he never takes a drink. We were all quite relieved when it was discovered that Mr. Jeremy Warrender was the real murderer. He was marched right off to receive his just deserts. However, I would like to clarify one thing to anyone who happens on this letter. You know yourself I had nothing to do with the drug business. With that, rest in peace, dear man. FOOTBALL Perhaps the most exciting event of the season was the 13-6 win over Abington. They led for most of the game, but the Lakers ' offense came to hfe in the fourth quarter. In the last seconds of the game, Silver Lake scored. The extra point conversion was good. Thus the Lakers had beaten the Green Wave for the second time in the school ' s history. Another highlight of the season was the 6-0 win over Middleboro, in traditionally wet weather. STATISTICS Cole attempted 34 passes in one game Zaniboni made 17 tackles in one game Walsh made 13 assists in one game (having recovered from a broken foot earlier in the season) Yards gained passing — 1076, compared to opponents ' 661 ■■■- J_ !  ■« ■. 1 r iirt . % f - T. The outstanding senior was Corey Powers. Other seniors on the team were Janis Kvelums and Leigh Creighton. The Lakers beat Plymouth-Carver, Thayer, North Quincy, Rockland, Sci- tuate, and Bridgewater-Raynham. This was one of the most successful seasons at Silver Lake in recent years. CHEER LEADERS A. Other senior members were Ed Kauffman, Dan Lansing, Kevin Rafferty and Tom Regan. At this printing the Laker five has a record of 2-11. Although this isn ' t an impressive total, games have been lost by an average of 4 points. Often times a fourth quar- ter rally would just fall short of its goal. Quite often when a team doesn ' t have winning ways the players and students get down. But continually through the season our team bat- tled down to the buzzer. It is also safe to say that THE cheering section made more noise, and gave more support than any other in the league. With the experience the under- classmen gained this year, there is a bright future ahead for Silver Lake. Row 1: D. Lansing, D. Bostrom, Capt. K. Richards, P. McClelland, E. Kauffman, R. Silver Lake will enjoy another fine season. GIRL9 ' TENNI9 D. Glass, L. Beane, J. Bartels, S. Fairweather, D. Other senior members of the team are Leigh Creighton, Lawney Crudup, Kevin Gifford, and Larry Walker. Traditionally at Silver Lake, the track team has a winning record and is very tough in League and State competition. Besides the run- ning events there are the field events, all of which take a great amount of effort and time. The 1968 team hopes to better the 5-4 record of ' last year. It is hoped that in the near future Silver Lake will have a new track and football fields, which are now be- ing planned for construction. Roiv I: J. Hibler, C. Powers, Co-Capt., D.
