FOREIGN LANGUAGES AND COMMERCIAL The aim of all the foreign language courses here at Silver Lake is to stress the four essentials of lan- guage and to insure the proficiency of the student in reading, writing, speaking and listening with com- prehension. This study also provides the pupils with an interesting background of the foreign literature and culture. If the students maintain good grades, they are able to go on field trips, such as the one the French students took to Boston last October. The major objective of the Commercial Depart- ment is to train students for occupational compe- tence in office, sales and managerial positions, as well as to develop the understanding and skills that are basic to intelligent living in our modern econ- omy. The Office Practice at Silver Lake helps the Senior student apply what he has learned and ob- tain experience in business administration. MRS. MATH This year, more emphasis than ever has been placed upon current world history. Its position in the curriculum has been increased because of the recognition the United States has given to the new nationalist governments that have developed in many countries of the world. Comment- ing on the necessity of studying history, late President Hoover said, We must study history in order to avoid reliving it. Roger Bacon once said, Mathematics is the gate and key to all the sciences. This is quite true as most of our progress in science depends upon mathematical calcula- tions. Science, however, is only one field that requires a knowledge of mathematics. In the professions, in industry, in business, in the arts, and in the home, some knowledge of figures and figuring is needed. When a student fulfills a mathematics requirement, he acquires a necessary tool for successful living. MR. RONALD FALLON MISS PHYLLIS DENNETT MRS. JEAN DONOVAN MR. DONALD O. BURLING MR. The Science Department at Silver Lake provides students with the back- ground necessary to meet the chal- lenges of the ever increasing role of science in everyday life. Our courses are constantly expanding to keep pace with modem scientific advance- ments. This year has seen great moderni- zation in the study of Chemistry. An entirely new approach to its study is being employed, and a course for fu- ture nurses has been added. This year, as before, Advance Placement Science Seminar is being ofTered to Seniors. Earth Science is now avail- able to Business and General, as well as to College Course students. The yji i SCIENCE fine teachers and high standards of this department will continue to pro- duce students capable of competing in a world dependent upon science. • MR. CLARENCE HEUFELDER MR.
