Yearbook 1965 373 73 YEA 37605001757255 Silver Lake Regional High School Library DATE DUE I Library Silver Lake Regional High School Kingston, MA 02364 Before the colonists came to Plymouth, the Pequot Indians used the ibimi or bitter berry as medi- cine, food and as a symbol of peace between the vari- ous tribes .. . When the Pilgrims arrived, the In- dians made gifts of the cranberries to them The Pilgrim women cooked the berries in water and sweetenings and thus made the first batch of cranberry sauce . Soon after the berries ' introduction to Europe on clipf)er ships, there was great demand for leir exportation . . . This lemand resulted in greater concenfnifion on cultiva- tion A particular method of cultivation, de- veloped by Henry Hall, employed throughout Cape Cod and Silver Lake districts ... As the towns in the region grew in population and demand for more berries and berry products increased, so did the cranberry bogs. ■fe velo ■i ' . •;- ' i ' ;d.v ci : m 5vP ' r- . 1 ' TORCH SILVER LAKE REGIONAL ' J i Y ' ' High school jii:iMr, TnM M.cr il5t ' ' :; :PW «!55W«« yatj i iKiw ai Mrw n S Lgi - i il :r: r v iVr. - ' v- ' i ' - ' rj rfyaaj PRESENT THE I Ue ' [onfenfs I J liliMipi DEDICATION 4-5 ADMINISTRATION 6-7 GUIDANCE 8 FACULTY 9-16 BUILDING STAFF 17 SENIORS AND ACTIVITIES 18-71 UNDERCLASSMEN 72-82 JUNIORS 74-76 SOPHOMORES 77-79 FRESHMEN 80-82 VOCATIONAL 83-85 ACTIVITIES 86-99 SPORTS 100-119 SUBSIDIES 120-121 SPONSORS 122-124 v .r..: ' 7 s!« :f!:-;vw ' j.y!¥. Coakley. Mr. Coakley graduated from Archbishop Williams High School in 1953 and then . . . surprised myself more than anyone else by studying to become a teacher. In 1958, he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from the State College at Boston, where he is now doing graduate work. After practice teaching in the city, Mr. Coakley came to Silver Lake. He prefers the relaxed atmosphere of the country, where emphasis is placed on the individual student, to the impersonal tension of the city. In addition to teaching various sci- ences, Mr. Coakley acted as director of the Science Fair and coach of the Freshman baseball team for three years. Ever since coming to Silver Lake, he has served as advisor to the Junior Class and has greatly contrib- uted to the success of the past five Junior Proms. = X . 4 V Vv N X As for future plans, Mr. Coakley wants to remain in the classroom rather than join the administrative branch of edu- cation. The one stimulus that might induce him to temporarily depart from his vocation would be, as he says, the first com- mercial passenger flight to the moon. vV ' ADMINISTRATION The Administration is the most important body at Silver Lake Regional High School. Part of its function is to provide courses and services that will guide the student as he goes forth, a Silver Lake graduate. The curriculm offered is aimed at developing all levels of student aptitudes, needs, and interests. This includes not only the college bound student but also those who will terminate their formal education with graduation from high school. Along with the school committee, the Administration keeps the school run- ning smoothly and efficiently. MR. FRANCIS MORAN SUPERINTENDENT MR. ARTHUR SILVESTER PRINCIPAL I, MR. ARTHUR HAND ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL - - , s I .. • GUIDANCE The purpose of the Guidance Department is to aid the student in personal relationships and problems, as well as in the areas of vocation and education. This year, in the latter two fields, Freshmen and Sophomores were given a series of tests to help them understand their capabilities and to check their specific areas of interest. Juniors and Seniors were provided with information that enabled them to decide on their future occupational or further educational plans. Silver Lake has teachers who stress not only academic subjects, but also those of a non-academic nature. These subjects combine to produce a student well- schooled in all the areas justifiably deemed important by society. Mr. Curran teaches the special classes. Mrs. Peterson, the school nurse, does her best to re- lieve our various aches and pains. Culturally, our Art teachers, Mrs. Johnston and Mr. Semple; and our Music teachers, Mr. Wallace and Mr. Lincoln; help to stimulate our interest and to develop our abilities in their respective fields. Our Physical Education instructors, Mr. Girouard, Mr. Montosi, Mr. Pierce, Miss Wo- lejko, and Mrs. Stratton coach us in the rules of various sports and help us to de- velop team spirit and co-operation. Man needs desperately to reach young people and to imbue them with a love for language ENGLISH and a determination to find their individual- ity within the words they write or speak. Our young people must feel at home in their na- tive tongue before they can sit at the peace tables of the future or plot the pathway to the stars. Imi 3 T H E ■f w:;: — MR. JOHN McGORMICK MR. Its position in the curriculum has been increased because of the recognition the United States has given to the new nationalist governments that have developed in many countries of the world. Comment- ing on the necessity of studying history, late President Hoover said, We must study history in order to avoid reliving it. Roger Bacon once said, Mathematics is the gate and key to all the sciences. This is quite true as most of our progress in science depends upon mathematical calcula- tions. Science, however, is only one field that requires a knowledge of mathematics. In the professions, in industry, in business, in the arts, and in the home, some knowledge of figures and figuring is needed. When a student fulfills a mathematics requirement, he acquires a necessary tool for successful living. MR. RONALD FALLON MISS PHYLLIS DENNETT MRS. JEAN DONOVAN MR. DONALD O. BURLING MR. DONALD McALEER FOREIGN LANGUAGES AND COMMERCIAL The aim of all the foreign language courses here at Silver Lake is to stress the four essentials of lan- guage and to insure the proficiency of the student in reading, writing, speaking and listening with com- prehension. This study also provides the pupils with an interesting background of the foreign literature and culture. If the students maintain good grades, they are able to go on field trips, such as the one the French students took to Boston last October. The major objective of the Commercial Depart- ment is to train students for occupational compe- tence in office, sales and managerial positions, as well as to develop the understanding and skills that are basic to intelligent living in our modern econ- omy. The Office Practice at Silver Lake helps the Senior student apply what he has learned and ob- tain experience in business administration. MRS. Our courses are constantly expanding to keep pace with modem scientific advance- ments. This year has seen great moderni- zation in the study of Chemistry. An entirely new approach to its study is being employed, and a course for fu- ture nurses has been added. This year, as before, Advance Placement Science Seminar is being ofTered to Seniors. Earth Science is now avail- able to Business and General, as well as to College Course students. The yji i SCIENCE fine teachers and high standards of this department will continue to pro- duce students capable of competing in a world dependent upon science. • MR. CLARENCE HEUFELDER MR. There are ag- ricultural, carpentry, and auto- motive courses. There is also a course in home management for girls. Many special projects have been undertaken this year. Two of these are the construction of the football grandstands and the administration building, which are being built by the carpentry department. JMl ' 111 1 j «««. Graduation Biggest class ever to grad- uate — and of you ask any Senior you ' ll find it ' s the best ! MR. QUINLAN, CLASS ADVISOR CLASS HISTORY . Who can ever forget the wonderful years we had at Silver Lake? It seems only yesterday we were that awkward group entering the seventh grade of 1959. At our first assembly with words of encouragement by Mr. Silvester, we discovered that half of us would be attending the Silver Lake Annex, the former Kingston High School. Day by day we parted on our way to classes. The lucky few who attended the Annex will never forget the extra holidays they had because the heating system did not al- ways work! Though miles separated our learning, our class spirit brought us together for special activities. We acted as one through the Student Council and put on dances at Silver Lake and the Annex. . . . Upon entering the eighth grade, our class at last was working together academically and socially. It was a year of decisions as we looked forward to high school. We had to choose our courses and subjects, many of which would be quite new to the curric- ulum we had been used to. ... In 1961 we became the green Freshman. Immediately our class was caught up in the spirit of Silver Lake. Two Freshman, Christopher Binns and George Burrows, won varsity letters on the Cross-Country team. Margaret Brennan was chosen co-captain of the newly organized drill team. In football, basketball, and base- ball, we made outstanding contributions to make their seasons quite successful. Many represented Silver Lake at the Music Festi- val. At the regional Drama Festival, Lydia Weston won an acting award. Our Freshman dance, Swing Into Spring was a great success. Officers leading us were: John Lyons, President; Margaret Brennan, Vice President; Susan Darsch, Secretary; Cynthia Hen- rich, Treasurer; and Nancy Fitzgerald, Historian. ... As Sophomores we kept up the brisk pace started as Fresh- men. We sold class pins, which added much revenue to our ever growing treasury. Several of our boys were elected to the varsity football and basketball teams and several of our girls cheered them to victory on the Cheerleading squad. Our social for the year was Walk Right In. In the Spring we ordered our class rings, symbols of membership in the class. Officers for this year were: Christopher Binns, President; Margaret Brennan, Vice Presi- dent; Susan Darsch, Secretary; Cynthia Henrich, Treasurer; and Deborah Hollman, Historian. ... In 1963 we became the big Juniors. Margaret Brennan was chosen queen of the Homecoming dance. Early in the year we began to plan our Junior Prom, the big event of the year. A beau- tiful pagoda highlighted the decorations of our Oriental Twi- light. Terri Coffin was chosen queen with her court: Shirley Wise, Elaine Nicholson, Lydia Weston, Cynthia Elwell, Deborah Hollman, and Susan Darsch. As the year rolled to a close, antici- pation of the excitement of our Senior year began to mount. Class officers leading us were: Christopher Binns, President; Margaret Brennan, Vice President; Susan Darsch, Secretary; James Benotti, Treasurer; and Deborah Cellar, Historian. ... At last we were Seniors — and as full of senioritis as any class could be! This year ' s officers remained the same as the last. Our football squad accomplished THE MIRACLE; we defeated Plymouth-Carver. Margaret Brennan was chosen queen of the F.F.A. Harvest Ball. The Senior Class Play, Arsenic and Old Lace, was our biggest success. Besides selling more tickets than any previous class, we presented a play that was enjoyed immense- ly by the aud ience. Excellent performances by the entire cast and hard work by the back stage hands combined to make this the hit of the year. Climaxing the year was Senior Week — the banquet, awards night, class day, and the reception. With the advent of graduation, we ended our high school career and stood anxiously, a little doubtfully, on the threshold of life. 20 MRS. These were the biggest crowds ever to witness a Sil- ver Lake Class Play. The chief reason for the great turnout was the brilliant performances of the cast: Lydia Weston, Corinne Santerre, Stephen Laurenti, Richard Moore, Gregory Chase, Joanne Handy, and William Angell. John Lyons played the part of the dead bod- ies, supported by members of the football squad. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The principles of the National Honor Society are leadership, scholarship, citizenship, and service. An example of service to the school was evidenced in early fall when the members of the soci- ety sold Alston pictures to the junior and senior high students. The proceeds from this sale became part of the society ' s scho- larship fund. In a first for Silver Lake, the society planned, with Mr. Quinlan ' s help, a homecoming assembly for alumnae return- ing for the Christmas holidays. At this time Junior and Senior college preparatory students had a chance to learn about various types of higher education and the problems likely to be encoun- tered at college. Entering into many worthwhile projects, the Student Council has raised money to donate to the John F. Kennedy Memorial Library, as well as to aid both the Achievement Awards and Scholarship Programs. The money was raised by selling food and school materials in the vending machines and school store, by sponsoring a dance which was held December 28, and by selling Silver Lake banners at the football games. The Council accomplished much this year under the leadership of: Lee Alfieri, President; Christopher Binns, Vice-President; Cynthia Cook, Secretary; Deborah Hollman, Treasurer; and Margaret Brennan, Historian. At Christ- mas time, the Key Club collects canned goods from the student body and donates them to deserving families in the community. DRAMATICS CLUB Active interest in the art of drama, ei- ther in acting, directing, or working backstage on make-up, costumes, or props, has made the Dramatics Club an enthusiastic organization. A busy year has seen the Sophomore, Junior, and Se- nior classes competing in a one-act play contest for presentation at the Silver Lake Arts Festival. Belonging to this organization does not necessarily mean a final step into a career in the field of education. It does mean, however, that each member has a genuine in- terest in the teaching profession and is eager to in- vestigate his possibilities of becoming a teacher. Members in their Senior year are given an opportu- nity of self-testing by actually participating in class- room teaching in the Junior High School. The mem- bers of the club gather noteworthy happenings in the school, type them up and present them to the local newspapers. This gives the people in the neighboring towns who have ac- cess to the Old Colony Memorial, the Brockton Enterprise, the Silver Lake News, the Patriot Ledger or the New Bedford Standard Times, a chance to know what is going on at Silver Lake. The accomplishments and success of the 1964-1965 Music Department was mainly due to the enthusi- astic and energetic leadership of Mr. Irving Wallace. Selling of picturesque and informative calendars by members of the band and orchestra was one of the money-making projects which enabled them to hold several exchange concerts during the year. New marching style which was displayed at foot- ball games and at the Memorial Day Parades in the four towns was incorporated at Silver Lake. Praiseworthy performances were presented by the Music Department beginning with tryouts for S.E.M.S.B.A. In March a concert was held at the Arts Festival; in April a Tri-Town Concert by the combined bands of Silver Lake, Plymouth-Carver, and Duxbury, was performed for the Convention of Secondary School Committeemen; in May a concert for the fourth through sixth grades of the four re- spective towns was held, and outdoor evening con- certs were held for the public of the four respective towns; and finally the Silver Lake Band performed for the last time of the school year at commence- ment exercises for the graduating seniors. FOOTBALL Although the Silver Lake football team did not have a winning season, the boys exhibited great team effort. The highlight of the season was Silver Lake ' s victory over Plymouth- Carver in their annual Thanksgiving Day gridiron classic. It was the first victory for the Lakers over the Blue Eagles in the history of the schools. Led by co-captains John Howe and Dave Springer, the Lakers came to life in the final two games of the season. Special tribute was given to Dave Springer for being selected All-Scho- lastic tackle by the Brockton Enter- prise and the Boston Globe.
