At IN MEMORIUM On November 22, 1963, John F. Kennedy was shot while traveling in a motorcade in Dallas, Texas. As the stunning word flashed around the globe, people great and small simply stopped and stared in disbelief. First came tears, then halting words. Reporters stopped people on the streets to see what their reaction was to the death of their president. A college student felt as if the end of the world had come, and you are not prepared for it. Others said, Your thoughts just don ' t work at a time like this. In almost every country there was mourning. People wept, prayed, stood silent in the streets, or lit torches to parade sadly through the night. Americans learned how many people of other lands respected Kennedy, and the loss that they felt was the loss of one who seemed to them a personal friend as well as a world leader. The reason why the shock was so great was that when one heard the news he felt suddenly so empty; it was the most unexpected thing that could be imagined. It was the least likely thing to happen to the world. That Kennedy should be the one, well, we just didn ' t believe in assassination any more, not in a civilized world. Another reason why the shock was so great on American people was the extraordinary sense Kennedy gave of being alive. No one had such vitality of personality. Following his death, many of his speeches were recorded and sold throughout the country, along with books of his life and the tragedy of his death. People from all over the country bought these books and records to keep in memory of him. No one will ever forget November 22, 1963. They will remember where they were when they heard the shocking news, and how they stood in disbelief of that terrible tragedy that happened in Dallas. Frances Martin JOHN FITZGERALD KENNEDY
