REGIONAL SCHOOL COMMITTEE Mr. B. Dalton, Chairman Mr. R. Barbieri Mr. F. Downing Mr. B. Conant Mrs. V. Crosby Mr. H. Hammond, Jr. Mrs. P. Holzworth Mr. R. Mendall Mr. H. Trimble Mr. G. Cushman TO THE SENIORS OF 1963 E Pluribus Unum — One Out of Many. The editors of the Torch have selected a most timely theme. Silver Lake is now in its eighth year of operation. One takes for granted the con- tinuing physical growth of the school. It is the intellectual growth of our school, however, that is the more significant. Students possess a high loyalty to Silver Lake. This loyalty manifests itself in many ways. School activities involve students from all four towns comprising the school district. Friendships cut across town lines. There is col- lective pride by the community in the accomplishments of students no matter whether they excel in the academic pro- gram or interscholastic athletics. Student ties are directed solely to Silver Lake. For students growing up in the four-town area this is the only high school they have known. The passage of time has proven the wisdom of the regional school concept and of the motto E Pluribus Unum — One Out of Many. Silver Lake Regional School District Committee BRENDAN I. B Pluribus Unum The motto of the United States first appeared on the title page of the Gentleman ' s Journal in Janu- ary, 1692. On August 10, 1776, a committee com- posed of Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson, proposed to the Continental Con- gress that it be adopted as our maxim. This was approved on June 20, 1782, and in 1786 it first ap- peared on several coins. The actual selection of E PLURIBUS UNUM is credited to Pierre Eugene du Simitiere, a Swiss artist employed by the committee after the Declaration of Independence to submit a design for the United States seal. Although the de- sign was rejected, the motto remains a part of our heritage. E PLURIBUS UNUM is a significant motto at Silver Lake, in that many students from four towns band to- gether to form one institution of learning. Our school from the many students entrusted to it turns out individuals prepared to face the challenges of a modern world.
