uates of Silver Lake will long remember Mr. Parks. Who could forget his lively civics classes where he surprised innocent freshmen into learning? Who could forget his world history classes, the spell of the Byzantine Empire or the correct spelling of Nebuchadnezzar on the daily quiz ? Who could possibly forget U.S. History, required of all, or the memorizing of Lincoln ' s Gettysburg Address? Mr. Parks ' wonderful sense of humor has often amused us in the class room, in the gym, where he can often be found, and at Hayford ' s store where he keeps well informed about his students and where his stu- dents try to keep up with him. As our athletic director and coach of cross country and track teams, he is always ready to help a sports enthusiast. He is also ready to help anyone academically, and our favorite saying is talk to Mr. Ed. Because of his patience and understanding, the Senior Closs is proud to dedicate the 1963 TORCH to Mr. Edward F. Parks, Jr.

B Pluribus Unum The motto of the United States first appeared on the title page of the Gentleman ' s Journal in Janu- ary, 1692. On August 10, 1776, a committee com- posed of Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson, proposed to the Continental Con- gress that it be adopted as our maxim. This was approved on June 20, 1782, and in 1786 it first ap- peared on several coins. The actual selection of E PLURIBUS UNUM is credited to Pierre Eugene du Simitiere, a Swiss artist employed by the committee after the Declaration of Independence to submit a design for the United States seal. Although the de- sign was rejected, the motto remains a part of our heritage. E PLURIBUS UNUM is a significant motto at Silver Lake, in that many students from four towns band to- gether to form one institution of learning. Our school from the many students entrusted to it turns out individuals prepared to face the challenges of a modern world.
