Who could forget his lively civics classes where he surprised innocent freshmen into learning? Who could forget his world history classes, the spell of the Byzantine Empire or the correct spelling of Nebuchadnezzar on the daily quiz ? Who could possibly forget U.S. History, required of all, or the memorizing of Lincoln ' s Gettysburg Address? Mr. Parks ' wonderful sense of humor has often amused us in the class room, in the gym, where he can often be found, and at Hayford ' s store where he keeps well informed about his students and where his stu- dents try to keep up with him. As our athletic director and coach of cross country and track teams, he is always ready to help a sports enthusiast. He is also ready to help anyone academically, and our favorite saying is talk to Mr. Ed. Because of his patience and understanding, the Senior Closs is proud to dedicate the 1963 TORCH to Mr. Edward F. Parks, Jr. B Pluribus Unum The motto of the United States first appeared on the title page of the Gentleman ' s Journal in Janu- ary, 1692. On August 10, 1776, a committee com- posed of Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson, proposed to the Continental Con- gress that it be adopted as our maxim. This was approved on June 20, 1782, and in 1786 it first ap- peared on several coins. The actual selection of E PLURIBUS UNUM is credited to Pierre Eugene du Simitiere, a Swiss artist employed by the committee after the Declaration of Independence to submit a design for the United States seal. Although the de- sign was rejected, the motto remains a part of our heritage. E PLURIBUS UNUM is a significant motto at Silver Lake, in that many students from four towns band to- gether to form one institution of learning. Our school from the many students entrusted to it turns out individuals prepared to face the challenges of a modern world. REGIONAL SCHOOL COMMITTEE Mr. B. Dalton, Chairman Mr. R. Barbieri Mr. F. Downing Mr. B. Conant Mrs. V. Crosby Mr. H. Hammond, Jr. Mrs. P. Holzworth Mr. R. Mendall Mr. H. Trimble Mr. G. Cushman TO THE SENIORS OF 1963 E Pluribus Unum — One Out of Many. The editors of the Torch have selected a most timely theme. Silver Lake is now in its eighth year of operation. One takes for granted the con- tinuing physical growth of the school. It is the intellectual growth of our school, however, that is the more significant. Students possess a high loyalty to Silver Lake. This loyalty manifests itself in many ways. School activities involve students from all four towns comprising the school district. Friendships cut across town lines. There is col- lective pride by the community in the accomplishments of students no matter whether they excel in the academic pro- gram or interscholastic athletics. Student ties are directed solely to Silver Lake. For students growing up in the four-town area this is the only high school they have known. The passage of time has proven the wisdom of the regional school concept and of the motto E Pluribus Unum — One Out of Many. Silver Lake Regional School District Committee BRENDAN I. Mrs. Nathanson GLASS HISTORY Now, as Seniors, we look back over six eventful years at Silver Lake and let our thoughts dwell on many memorable experiences. Our first thought is of the bewildered group that gathered in the Little Theatre in September of 1958. Who would then have dreamed that we would ever see graduation day? Our first dance The Seventh Grade Satellite Swing was a success and tended to strengthen our friendships. We continued the tradition of presenting a class dance in the eighth grade with The Shillelagh Shag. This time we had a contest for choosing the name of the dance for which the winner received two tickets. We participated in the science-countdown during this year, and a member of our class represented us in the State-wide contest. We climaxed the year by presenting the musical production The Forest Prince. In junior high we formed many lasting friendships, but it was during our first year in high school that we started to take an active part in school activities. It was this year that we established the custom of having a squad of freshman cheerleaders to cheer for the freshman boys at games. Our girls may not have been as smooth as the varsity, but they were effective and very enthusiastic. Our annual dance The Klompendanse or the Dance of the Wooden Shoes, was highlighted by the music of Kenny Pimental and His Rhythm Aces. With the aid of our advisors, Mrs. Breen and Mr. Minnock, and our class officers, President; Gary Lunt, Vice-President; JoAnn Reardon, Secretary; Mary Nicholson, Treasurer- Daniel Burke and Historian,- Marianne Cote, our class had quite a successful year. 1 959 brought us a little closer to our dream of being seniors, for we became sophomores. We elected as President; Daniel Burke, Vice President; JoAnn Reardon, Secretary; Mary Nicholson, Treasurer,- JoAnn Randall, and Historian,- Elizabeth True. Our class dance was not quite as elaborate as in past years! We had a record hop after one of the basketball games, and because of restrictions as to attire, the attendance was poor. This year proved to be a year of awards for our class. One of our girls became the F.F.A. Sweetheart, and one of our boys won the annual F.F.A. speaking contest. We were well represented in the dramatic club play which took first place at Sharon in the district Drama Festival. A large number of our members were inducted into the Honor Society, and many of the boys played varsity sports. The class officers for our junior year were President; Greg Lennox, Vice President; Daniel Burke, Secre- tary; Mary Nicholson, Treasurer; JoAnn Randall, and Historian; Ellen Fitzgerald. Along with the execu- tive board and the advisors, Mr. Coakley and Mrs. Bjornholm, they carrie d on the business of our class. Many of the juniors took the two hour P.S.A.T. exam complete with fire drill in the middle! In January we held a food sale to raise money to defray the cost of the decorations for the Junior Prom. The committees began their work early, and we spent many an evening painting trees, dying cheese cloth blue, making stars, and creating a castle. When all of these things were finally assembled in the gym and covered with angel hair, a Wonderland by Night emerged. We danced to the music of the Bridgewater State Orchestra. The highlights of the evening were the Grand March, (which represented many long hours of practice) and the selection of the Queen and her Court. We presented gifts to our advisors,- to Mrs. Bjornholm some flowers, to Mr. Coakley, an empty box which we filled later! Question: Who lost the cufflinks? Dinner at the Bourne Mill concluded the evening. Finally in September of 1 962, we became seniors. After hearing speeches from each candidate cam- paigning for a class office, we chose as President; Vincent Cogliano, Vice-President,- Angelo DiMario, Secretary; Mary Nicholson, Treasurer; JoAnn Randall, and Historian; Marilyn Shaw. Our advisors, Mrs. Nathanson and Mr. Hand helped us plan the many activities for the year. Our Senior Class Play, My Three Angels was very successful, and credit should be given to all people who worked on it for their fine production. In planning Senior Week activities, it was decided to omit a picnic because the class was too large, and to hold our catered banquet in the gym. Graduation brings an end to our high school years, but it does not dim our pleasant memories. Al- though friends and acquaintances may part, we know that the ties of good fellowship formed here at school will continue in the years to come. Marilyn E. The beauty of silvered trees against a mist-blue castle, and the music of the Bridgewater State Orchestra trans- formed our gymnasium into a Wonderland By Night. WONDERLAND BY NIGHT 44 SENIOR CLASS PLAY MY THREE ANGELS Our fine feathered friends came to the rescue as Janice was the hit of the play. My Three Angels didn ' t, however, need a chicken to make the audi- ences realize what a success our endeavor was. November 16 and 17, 1962 were the nights, Miss Margeson the director, and three convicts the at- tention getters. New Addition F 1L ■(pictures of old high school courtesy of The Silver Lake News) Another milestone in the history of the Silver Lake Regional High School was reached in September with the opening of the new junior high addition. Since the Silver Lake District came into being eight years ago, the school population has steadily increased. Within several years, a need for more classroom space was recognized. After much discussion and debate, an addition appeared to be the solution to the problem. It was to be annexed to the east wing of the present structure. Once the actual work began, many delays had to be faced. Although strikes and a lack of available materials hampered construction, the result was a modern and most appealing structure — a pride of the district. The addition consists of new classrooms, an art room, a shop, a science laboratory, and an all purpose room to be used as a combination gym, cafe- teria, and auditorium. With the exception of five rooms in the main building, the junior high is housed completely in this area. This has created a situation which is believed very beneficial. The addition is just one step to a larger, better organized school. As our towns continue their great population expansion, our school, also, will have to reach for new horizons, not only in physical expansion, but in academic expansion, as well. AD- VISORS: Mrs. Bjornholm and Mr. Binns. The 1962-1963 school year saw the Silver Lake Student Council in its most active year since its be- ginning. In the fall the council decided to continue the sponsorship of the Achievement Awards Program and the Scholarship Program. In order to raise the money needed for these projects, action was taken to install food-vending machines in the bus lobby for students ' convenience after school. Adjacent to the vending machines a student store was established. Writing materials, books, pennants, and sweatshirts were made available in this store. Initial cost of stocking the store was met with money collected dur- ing a tremendously successful Pass the hat day. To complete its corner in the bus lobby the Student Council designated sections of the bulletin board to the various clubs so that the entire school would be informed of their activities. The accomplishment and success of these endeavors was due mainly to the able guidance of the two new advisors, Mrs. Bjornholm and Mr. Binns. Their enthu- siasm, along with the energetic leadership of Presi- dent Greg Lennox and the vigorous response of the entire organization, made possible a prosperous year for the Student Council. The Silver Lake Chapter of the National Honor Society, under the guidance of Miss DeGere, strives to instill the ideals of Schol- arship, Character, Leadership, and Service in its members and the student body. In the fall, the society conducts the annual sale of individual portraits. This provides scholarships for worthy members at gradua- tion. Each year the society augments the scholarship fund by additional means. The climax of the year for the Society is the induction of new members, witnessed by the student body at a special assembly. At this time, the honor of membership is be- stowed upon outstanding members of the sophomore, junior, and senior classes. The society accomplished much this year, under the leadership of: Daniel Burke, Presi- dent; Seppo Lehto, Vice President; Roxanne Gile, Secretary; Alma Antoniotti, Treasurer,- and JoAnn Randall, Historian. 85 KEY CLUB ■- % m ' Wl . % m ■m FIRST ROW: G. The Silver Lake Chapter is dedicated to the ideals of Key Club International: Service to school and comm unity. Under the leadership of Guy Sil- vester, president; Ed Backus, vice president; Marshall Gile, secretary,- and Bob Randall, treasurer,- the boys attempted to fulfill these ideals through various service projects, such as conducting a food drive at Christmas time, sup- porting other school functions and organizations, and awarding two scholarships at the end of the year. By hearing speakers from the spon- soring Kiwanis Clubs, attending Kiwanis Club meetings, and by sending representatives to the district Key Club Convention, the club members were constantly reminded of their responsi- bilities as members of an international organiza- tion. With its new advisor, Mr. Splaine, the Key Club enjoyed a reasonably successful year and hopes to accomplish even more next year. DRAMATICS CLUB At an organizational meeting in November, the Dra- matics Club elected Roxanne Gile, President; Phillip Tarantino, Vice President; Linda Gustafson, Secre- tary,- Alma Antoniotti, Treasurer,- and Cynthia Cook, Historian. Lydia Weston represented the club at Student Council meetings. This year the Dramatics Club innovated a Christmas meeting under the sponsorship of Miss Margeson. Selected for presen- tation at the regional dramatic festival on March 23 was Thieves ' Carnival by the same playwright who authored The Lark, last year ' s presentation. The aim of the Future Teachers of America is to promote interest in the field of education. During the seven years in the history of Silver Lake, our F.T.A. chapter has become a respected member ot the school community. Its work in bringing a true understanding of the teaching profession to students who might consider the possibility of a career in education has become a valuable part of Silver Lake. But this is not its sole aim. The F.T.A. fulfills the need, on a secondary school level, of organizing harmonious relations between student and teacher, and between teacher and parent. Through filmstrips, guest speakers, and field trips, the association shows the student body the training necessary for teaching, its hardships and rewards. The annual induction of Future Teachers serves a dual function. It formally welcomes new members into the group and explains to invited parents the role which the organization plays. This year the Future Teachers celebrated the silver anniversary of the National Association of Future Teachers of America at their induction. For twenty-five years girls and boys throughout the country have united to prepare themselves for their future teaching careers. Joining the F.T.A. does not represent a final decision by any of its members to enter o career in education, but rather it serves as a proving ground for ideas. Although it seeks to find students interested in teaching, the F.T.A. is open to all stu- dents who are considering any form of education as a career. This year the Future Nurses Association has seen an increase in the number of girls interested in the nursing profession. This was evidenced by the multitude of new members present at the annual induction. Sparked by the combined efforts of new and old members, the Future Nurses have visited many hos- pitals and have brought joy to many. One such visit found the members giving a Christmas party for the children of the Lakeville Sanitorium. Under the leadership of Mrs. Peterson, our school nurse, and Diane Nava, president, the Future Nurses have had a very successful and rewarding year. The music selected for the Combined Concert which was held in the spring, tested the musical ability of the Silver Lake students. The concert was not all work for it also provided the experiences of meeting new friends and performing in a larger group. A new look accented the appearance of the band. The members donned their new uniforms for the Thanksgiving Day game at Plymouth. They made a very striking picture as the reds-and-whites as- sembled on the field. The new uniforms represented many hours of work by the Band Parents. In addition to performing in the Silver Lake band, orchestra and chorus, several members went on to newer and greater heights. Having borne the trials and anxieties of try-outs, the best musicians were placed in the Southeastern District, S.E.M.S.B.A., All- State and The New England Concert Festival. With the assistance of Mr. Chouinard, the music de- partment has represented Silver Lake in a praise- worthy manner. FIRST ROW: R. Ruprecht, P. Buckley, G. Wilson, F. Catalmo, J. Galassi, D. Reed, R. JUNIOR VARSITY The 1962 Girls ' Field Hockey Team enjoyed an enthusiastic season with more than fifty candi- dates reporting for the two teams. The J.V. team had an undefeated season, and the Varsity record was .500. Representing the senior class were Marilyn Shaw, Captain,- Dottie Goslin,- and Helen Jameson. The experience gained by the younger girls working with the seniors makes the outlook promising for next year. Coach Longhi was assisted by Miss McPhee, a practice teacher from Sargent. KNEELING: M. Fontaine, S. Ponte. Girls ' basketball was a new game this year with the rule change allowing full court play. Injuries, how- ever, were the bad luck that kept the varsity from being undefeated, but not from having a winning season. They played with enthusiasm throughout their games, and those they did lose were by three and four points. The highlight of the season was their win over previously undefeated Abington. Coach Longhi said she had looked forward to this year ' s team as she had looked forward to no other. Six of the ten girls are graduating but take with them happy memories of a job well done. JUNIOR VARSITY Miss Kathleen O ' Donnell joined the junior varsity girls as their coach almost in mid- season, and it was under her direction that the team enjoyed its first victory. With the graduation of most of the varsity in June, this team is looked to for next year ' s repu- tation. If the girls continue to play as well as they did in the second half of their sea- son, they should have no problem. HnV ' ■■V Aft. Anchored by co-captains Don Bearce and Angelo DiMario, the Silver Lake line was, however, one of the brighter points in an otherwise dreary season. Seniors Dan Burke, Bill Arruda, Dave Berridge, Barry Pratt and Joe Hebert played well. The backfield, composed entirely of juniors, gained valuable experi- ence for next year. Don Bearce, Angelo DiMario and Bilk Trus- kowski were given honorable mention in the Boston Herald All- Scholastic Team Awards. JUNIOR VARSITY FIRST ROW: S Griffith. R. Curtiss, S. Jomeson, M. Robare, Mr. Carnathan. The Silver Lake basketball team went through an- other building year. The varsity squad, composed pri- marily of juniors, had a mediocre season but showed much improvement over last year. Silver Lake had a balanced scoring attack with Ed Mathews, John Neal, Jim Smith and Ron Bersani accounting for most of the Laker points. But the Lakers ' lack of height was felt against such teams as Abington, Rockland and Plymouth. While the Lakers will still have height prob- lems, next year looks promising. Perhaps the idea of a Laker team in the Tech Tourney is not history but something, instead, that will be realized in the near future. VARSITY FIRST ROW: E. Mathews, G. Bos- lock, J. Neal. R. After winning the league championship the year before, Silver Lake suffered a slight letdown, winning only five of fourteen league games. However, the 1963 season looks promising with all but three starters returning. 104 TENNIS KNEELING: B. Wheeler, G. Doody, A. O ' Brien. STANDING: J. Parker, J. Parker, M. Randall, Mr. Girouard. The 1962 girls ' tennis team, under the direction of Mr. Girouard, won approximately half of their meets. The four seniors on the team have an average of two and one-half seasons of play each. This fact, coupled with the enthusiasm of the rest of the team, as- sures a successful season this year. 105 CROSS COUNTRY FIRST ROW: C. Binns, R. Randall, R. Woodbury, G. Lennox, S. McGlone, M. Gile, G. Clark; SECOND ROW: S. Miles, G. Burrows, L. Woodbury, H. Cadenhead, N. Whisron, L. Altleri, Mr. Parks. On almost any fall day members of Silver Lake ' s cross- country team are bound to whiz by the unwary in their red sweatshirts. This includes the cold drizzly days as well as sunny days. Their persistence, their skill, and their rugged performances make our cross-country team re- spected at league meets. Underclass representation is quite broad, assuring Silver Lake of a fine cross-country season next year. int. te$ c U C|A ° F8S I AETNA ENGINEERING CO. FACTORY PAINT STORE BARNES WORSTEDS, INC.
