THE TORCH SILVER LAKE REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL KINGSTON, MASSACHUSETTS 1960 DEDICATION It is with great pleasure that we dedicate the I960 Torch to Mr. Robert J. Andrews. In his work as our art instructor Mr. Andrews has shaped the artistic talents of many seniors, and even more he has imbued us with a true appreciation of all that is beautiful. To him most seniors owe an everlasting vote of thanks. OUR HERITAGE As one of the oldest in the United States, the community of Silver Lake is rich in historical lore. Within a short distance of our school stand houses which were new in Colonial times, when the region was a flourishing industrial center. From the upper windows of our modern school building the ob- servant student may drink in the sparkling beauty of Silver Lake, with its blue waters shimmering in the sunlight. On a windy day tiny whitecaps break the silvery surface, accented by the tall, dark pines along its shores. On Lake Street is the site of the oldest anchor forge in America. Many of the great anchors used on Revolutionary War ships, including the anchor of the frigate Constitution, were forged here. Iron ore was dredged from the bottom of Silver Lake, then known as Jones River Pond. The house standing opposite to the athletic field, built in 1772, housed an old store and post office. The principal commodities sold in the store were rum and molasses brought in by ox carts which carried the anchors out to their historic destinies. Another house in the neighborhood contains a fire- place taken from the Boston Tea Party House when it was torn down. The ambitious members of our Dramatics Club may well gain inspiration from the fact that Ethel, Lionel, and John Barrymore spent several carefree summers along the shores of Silver Lake. They enjoyed the friendship of a neighbor. Even Plimpton, well-known Shakespearean actor. In a grove of fine trees near the railroad depot was located, in the late 1800 ' s, a thriving amuse- ment park from which a motor launch took parties on the lake. However, this type of amusement was brought to a tragic end when the launch exploded, killing many passengers. Not too many years ago the children of Silver Lake rode to school on a streetcar which followed the same route over which some of our fleet of buses now transport students to Silver Lake Regional High School. Here again tragedy struck when a streetcar became charged with electricity, electrocuting several children. To relate the exciting history of Silver Lake would consume much more space than we have at our disposal. We are not advocating that our student body spend its time in math class staring out at the shining surface of Silver Lake, but we would like to suggest that occasionally we may find inspiration in the realization that ours is a rich heritage and that as the latest actors in the panorama of Silver Lake ' s history, we have a responsible part to play. We, too, are building a new and better community, a united community, dedicated to scholarship, loyalty, character, and service. Because we feel that our basketball team, through its outstanding display of loyalty, good sports- manship, and co-operation, has carried us one step nearer to that unity without which we cannot progress satisfactorily, we have chosen to salute Mr. Killilea and his boys throughout The Torch. Lopes — who stands 5-6, and weighs all of 125 pounds — raced all around the Garden court last night. The diminu- tive Silver Lake guard hustled too much for Case of Swansea as he helped his team clinch the Class C title, 71 to 54. It ' s a funny thing about the kid, chuckled Coach John Killilea. He was a second stringer on our squad until iPete Alberghini came down iwith pneumonia just before the [regular season started. We threw Lopes in a scrim mage game against Quincy High, and we haven ' t been able to get him out of there since. Silver Lake is a regional school, explained the coach, and the student body is drawn from the populations of Car- ver, Halifax, Pembroke, Kings- ton, etc.. Lopes, who lives in Carver, has to commute 25 miles each way every day to get to school. That more than any of our other players have to travel. Said Killilea: Lopes prac- tically spends all his daylight hours either travelling, attend- ing classes or playing basket- ball. Lopes joined all the other junior starters in hitting for double figures with 10 points, plus setting up plays and run- ning up assists. Alberghini — apparently feel- ing no ill effects from his sick- ness earlier — topped the Lak- ers with 20 points, with Bill Carey close behind with 18 points. Gerry Paradis was high for the losers with 15. Silver Lake now holds claim to three different titles — the Old Colony League, South Shore Class A tourney, and now the Class C in the Tech. Silver Lake is (9-2 10-1) with but three games remaining. Both coach John Killilka and his squad are hoping for continued action in the Eastern Mass. Tourney at the Garden next month. We were 14-6 last year, said John, in his third year at Silver Lake. A couple of those setbacks were heartbreakers. At the conclusion of last year ' s campaign, the boys could hardly wait for this year. I felt they were justified in their belief. It ' s beginning to look as though we were right. One of the players, Walter Pratt, was so enthusiastic he simply couldn ' t wait for the cur- rent campaign. He enrolled in Bill Sharman ' s basketball clinic at Casco Bay, Me. According to Killillea, the results have been slightly short of miraculous. Walter, a 6-2 ' 2 180-poiind center, saw limited action last year l ecause of a broken hand. Bnt he loved basketball and the pointers he picked up from Sh,-jnnan and Bob Donham, an ex-Celtic, really are paying off. He ' s the team ' s top scorer with an average of 18 points in the first 10 games. In addition he ' s murder under the boards. He ' s developed into a top flight rebounder. Pratt is also a catcher in base- ball. What makes KilliUea even happier, Walt ' ll be back next ye since he ' s only a junior. Another junior on the startii five is 6-1, 175-pound forward B Carey. Carey knows htS w: around the courts, having bei a starter since his freshm; days. Another Diamond Bill is the second high scor and, like Pratt, also plays bas ball— as a pitcher-outfielder. Caarey ' s frontcourt mate i Pete Alberghini, a 6-3, 160 poun junior who also started Ias_ season. j Pete was out with walkiK pneumonia at the start of till season and has played in just t ' . last three games, said Johj Yet he is averaging 13 points ai provides additional strength u der the boards. Pete is also a baseball play along with Carey and Pratt. Silver Lake ' s backcourt starte are Dave Spath and Ed Lopes. Spata, a straight A student, the son of Plymouth High ' s bas ball coac ' n. Plymouth is, incide tally, SL ' s arch-rival in basebj as well as basketball. Lopes, 5-8, 145 pounds, ■wins li coach ' Ss accolade as the be defensive player in the league m. ian J I ' ve had rival coaches tell n Ihe ' s murder, said John. Tli( say when he plays a man-to-m£ I defense he covers all five playe; I at once. Lopes ' speed on the cour ctmes naturally. In addition ti playing baseball, he ' s a top-fligh runner on the cross-countr; team. Killillea has plenty of heig! and experience in his reseri forces as well. Three forwarxls Mike Federic (6-1, 175), Dwe Walsh (6-3, 18( and Greg Maguara (6-1, 150) pr vide valuable bench strength. Another leading reserve. Mil Farrell, is tagged by Killillea : the best shot on the team. He is lacking in experience bi he has a deay-e ye from anyplac on the court. He can hit ' ei from all over, said John. Other reserves are Bob Balbon jRay McManus and Terry Steven Barry Thorup and Ray Whittima I are the managers. Big Scope d l l VARSITY BASKETBALL ROW 1: D. Spath, R. Federico, W. Pratt, W. Carey, E. Under the great coach- ing of Mr. Kellilea the team won every championship available. These Championships included the Old Colony League Title, the South Shore Tourney and the Tech Tourney. The team ' s ' success was due mainly to the players ' great teamwork. Silver Lake was the first regional high school ever to win the Tech Tourney. 94 1959 BASEBALL TEAM The Lakers compiled a five win, ten loss record last year. With the team composed mostly of Sophomores, there will be a fine nucleus for this year ' s team. The line-up made up of 6 Sophs, 1 Senior, 1 Freshman, and 1 Junior. Captain Phil Laroche was one of the top pitchers in the area. There were 3 extra inning games with the regular 7 inning games running into 10 and 11. In the Middleboro game Laroche and Magura rolled up 25 strikes. This year even better results are expected. PERSONAL INTEGRITY and SINCERE INTEREST in their fellow human beings, not only in olde England but in the then very young Boston-town. And today we, the young people of Silver Lake Regional High School, the future leaders of this community, are most fortunate to have been fostered by a growing community of vitally interested and co-operative merchants, who are happy to assist in passing along to us their UNPARALLELED proud heritage. We are very fortunate to be living in an area that has contributed so much in time, effort, and money to the support of THE TORCH. We realize that it is not because our patrons can well afford it, but it is because of their deep and sincere interest in young people who will wholeheartedly strive to carry on these desirable ideals. . . .
