I z 1 I ' ' q x N Q X Io O N U' .0 00, - xy FHA A newly organized club :Ln Silver Lake High is the Future Homemalaers of America This is a national organization for hlgh school girls who have had some work in hane economics Thirty five girls have joined the club this year The constitution was accepted in October by a unanimous vote of the group A committee headed by Betty Harris prepared the constitution for the Club Instead of dues from each member, it was decided to have the concession stand at several football and basketball games to pay the dues of club members and the expenses of the Club The colors of the Club are red and white with a red rose being the flower The Chapter Adviser is the Home Economics teacher, lliss Hope latts Each Chapter also has a Chapter Mother who is a woman in the culmunity that is interested in Home Economics llrs Albert Shafer is the mother who helps the Silver Lake F H A The program for the year was based upon building for tmmrrow through building ourselves our homes, school betterment our organization, our commxmity, state and nation and fun One of the first projects of the year was to entertain at an All School fall party The group played a few games, danced, and enjoyed the refreshments Everyone ate doughnuts, popcorn balls and drank cider before going home Decorations were in keeping with the season There were bales of hay, corn shocks and streamers of crepe paper in brown and orange Oscar, the skull of some prehistoric bull, had a place of honor It is hoped that this spring it will be possible to have a banquet for the mothers Plans have been made forma W P A we pay all party to be held for the boy friends of Club Members Other projects of value to the school are being planned such as a spring clean up day and the apprcpreation of the money made -at the con cessions to buy a useful gift for the school or the Home Economic de parhnent This year's program has consisted of a variety of topics interest ing to home economists One of the most popular ones was a talen show Lt this program Marjorie and Marvalie Tibbs twirled, Marilyn Maupin played a piano solo, landa Conaway sang a solo, Barbara and Betty llitchell sang a duet and Kiss Miller talked and showed some of her antiques another program, Louise Martinek wrote a short skit on manners that was presented to an interested group Marcia Brooks portrayed 'Be Wrong' while June Snavely was her sister, 'Be Right Norma Kippes helped by playing the mother One program consisted of a movie on baking principles. Last fall ten girls who were Future Homemakers and Miss Watts, attended the district conference at the Highland Park High School in Topeka The program was interesting and the trip was fun Mr Reeder took the girls to the Conference in the bus It is hoped that some time soon degrees will be given to the girls who have worked in the Organization in the doorway. I , I 1' z w K s 4 A 1 img 3, A U X I f f 1 . .. .gfg Y V i 1 FFA The FFA Organizatlon has become a thriving group this year One of the first field tr1ps this Organization made was to the Kansas Free Fair at Topeka During the year the following field trips were made by this group ield trip to John Deer Day held in Topeka Olatha Judging Trip Tour of Morrell Packing Plant in Topeka and Swine Management School at Topeka Trip to the y1dW6St Farm and Home Week in Topeka, FFA Convention at Kansas City, American Royal Live Stock Show held in Kansas City and the Annual State Judging Contests in lanhattan Kansas Freshman initiatxon was held by the Chapter for the following new members: Stolle, Junior Bailey Gerald Qlankenship, Marvin Hromada and James Snyder, a sophomore A party for the new members climaxed initiation week A rodent contest was also held between members of the Silver Lake FFL Chapter Lloyd Wiederkehr and Jack Kibbee were the captains of the teams Lloyd Flederkehr's team won with a score of 21 225 points Jack Kibbee had the losing side with 10,180 points The losing team gave a party for the winners Some of the following kinds of pests were counted toward points sparrows, starlings rabbits, pigeons, crows, oppossums, hawks, rats mice, coons, ooyotes, foxes, maskrats ophers, moles and owls The purpose of the contest was to save grain and othe feeds for man and animals, and also to stimulate more interest among members of our FFL Club. Downing first round byes, following their perfect league record the Silver Lake first and second teams started play in the semi-finals of the County League Tournament at Roseville on February 20, by defeating both Rossville teams. The 'B' team played first and had easy going in winning 42-15. Ober- helman scored 15 points to lead the scoring. The 'A' team game was much tougher with the final score being 30-17. The Eagles couldn't seem to find the hoop and were pressed hard to win. Maupin scored 7 points for the Lakers. Silver Lake closed its basketball schedule with a double victory, lifting the season's record to 17 victories in 20 games. On February 27, the Eagle 'A' team whipped Alma's Blue Devils 30-18 on the Silver Lake court. Silver Lake's 'B' team also walked away from the Alma 'B' team to the tune of 36-13. The last game of the 1947-1948 season was played on the Berryton rectangle on February 28. The Lake's 'A' team rompped over the Berryton 'A team 50-22. The Eagle 'B' team also beat the Berryton 'B' team 38-13. BASKETBALL TROPHIES The 'A' team won the League Championship Trophy, while the second team glso won first in their division In the County Tournament the 'A' team won first place and the 'B' team placed second The first team trophy is every bit of sixteen inches high A dark rectang ular prism of walnut wood fourteen inches h1gh is the centerpiece This center piece is crowned by a six inch gold figure of a basketball player It has also a gold plate with the following engraving on it, 'First Place, Shawnee League and it is topped by a gold star On each side of the centerpiece are light colored pieces of wood which curve into long strips streaming into the base All this stands on a three inch block of dark walnut wood with a gold plate on its front with a one inch lighter base under it The second team trophy is also as pretty as the first team's Standing about fifteen inches high, this trophy has a plain round grooved piece of dark walnut wood as its centerpiece On top of this column is a gold figure of a basketball player which stands about four inches high The base is round and is made of lighter colored wood On this base is another round piece of dark walnut with a gold plate that has the following inscription upon its 'First Place, Shawnee League, Second Team The trophy for winning second place in the 'B' division of the League Tournament was won by Silver Lake. This trophy stands about ten inches high and has a gold figure of a basketball player on the top The base is made of black plastic with a gold plate on its front with the engraving, 'Shawnee League, B Tourney, Second '48 ' upon it Winning the championship at the County Tournament at Rossville, gave the Silver Lake 'A' team another very attractive trophy This trophy, standing nineteen inches high, has a crown of gold with a basketball player on a center piece of dark walnut wood On each side of this rounded centerpiece are pieces of walnut wood that taper into the base The base is a curved inch piece of dark walnut On this base are two gold eagles and in the center another gold basketball player's figure There is a gold plate on the front of the center piece upon which is inscribed, 'Shawnee League Tourney, First '48 ' WALSWORTH G BITH S USA .
