Advertisements Index gwm : O In Our Time 1969-1970eA year of action. Students were on the move. This was the year of mora- toriums, mini-skirts, maxi-coats, pierced ears, and flair legged pants. Boys dreamed of hav- ing the sharpest car in town, but were willing to come to school in everything from dune buggies to Mustangs. Students always seemed to question standards that were status quo. This year Silver Creek reached the 600 mark in enrollment and bulging classrooms made this fact a reality. Five new members were added to the faculty to accommodate the expanding classes. Our community grew also. New subdivi- sions began to be developed and many new families suddenly became part of the town. Troops began to be withdraWn from Viet Nam bringing a ray of hope for peace and an end to the war a little closer to a reality. As students faced the draft, a draft lottery came into effect. This promised a more im- partial selection of those who were to serve their country. This was the year of man,s first moon land- ing, a first for the United States and a first for the world. As the world viewed this out- standing achievement, students began to view a future with unlimited opportunities. Both the good and the not-so-good occurred. SC. had several defeats during the basket- ball season and lost the Holiday Tourney. In spite of these disappointments, students at SC. kept busy to make this a memorable year. These events filled our lives with excite- ment fear .. . new experience . .. de- feats success in the past hope for the future and all of them happened IN OUR TIME. Commencement Brings End to Work and Fun As the class of 70 met together for the final time on May 26, there were mixed feelings felt by all. They realized that they would no longer function as a group, but as individuals in a world of flurried activity. Graduation does mark an end to work and fun but it also marks a beginning of a new and challenging life. k Dusty Waiz, president of the class of 70, gives the opening address at commencement exercises. In an air of anticipation, seniors make last minute adjustments before the program. As Jeannette Smith sang uThe Lordvs Prayer? the crowd, forgetting the excitement of the evening, paused in meditation. Adorned in traditional cap and gown, seniors listen attentively to words of praise and encouragement. lFonnia Cook happily receives her high school diploma from Nuperintendent Herman Miller. h the program comes to a close, newly graduated seniors, 'Amnie Miller and Pat Blincoe, march confidently with diplomas m hand. English Students Utilize New Aids English is the most advertised, sought-after, and taught language in the world. To use cor- rect English at all times is not easy for most, but we have the chance to- learn the funda- mentals in the English courses offered at Silver Creek. Three years of English is required to graduate. College preparatory English is taken by seniors who are college-bound. For those seniors not interested in college, a business English course is offered. Mr. Goodlett enjoys relating the ageless beauty of Elizabethan writing to his senior literature classes. iiOf course sophomores enjoy Julius Caesar: I teach itI7, Speeches, a frightening requirement of Sophomore English, is demonstrated here by Shirely Stricker. Languages are essential and can be used in many careers. Besides helping to obtain jobs, they round out a personhs intellectual and edu- cational background. Latin, the fundamental language, is taught by Mrs. Werle. Spanish, a widely used and spoken language, is taught by Mrs. Croyle. Mrs. Werle,s facial expression shows that studying Latin requires complete attention. Ricki Gunterman breaks the traditional Spanish pifiata at Christmas time. Diane Dean probes deeply into the world of books. Unknowns, Equations Intrigue Mathematicians Mathematics is constantly being applied in the everyday life of the common person. To better themselves in this field, Silver Creek offers four years of math for students to prepare themselves for college. It also offers a year of general math. This year the beginning and advanced years of algebra were taught by Mr. Prather. Mr. Taylor taught general math; and advanced math, geometry, and general math were taught by Miss J ohnson. m1 . , . Mark and Tony utilize stirring rod and flask in a chemistry experiment, as Monte and Brent look on with interest. Sherry and Steve deter- mine heat capacity in physics class. Students PrObe the Mysteries Of Science Molecules are made of atoms. H20 equals water. Energy is the power to do work. These phrases are typical of the progressing science student. The four years of science offered at Silver Creek range from Biology, taught by Mr. Mosley and Mr. Love; Advanced biology, taught by Mr. Mosley; chemistry and physics taught by Mr. Love. Knowledge of the Past Opens Path to Future In order to take an active part in tomorrowis future, one must first understand that which went on in the past. Silver Creek offers every student a Chance to do this in the courses of World History taught by Mr. Mattox and Mrs. Croyle; U. S. History taught by Mr. Makow- sky; psychology and economics taught by Mr. Mattox; and U. S. Government taught by Mr. Booker. Many of these classes apply incidents that are found in the textbooks to the events of todayis world. i Somehow the photographer drew more attention in the World History class than Mr. Mattox. Mr. Makowsky sits on the edge of his seat discussing foreign policy. Bookkeeping students engage in anlexercise for balancing expense; accounts. Business Courses Ready Students for Careers Speed and efficiency. These two words enter each and every business or commerce student,s mind whether interested in a career or as a grade. A student with a business career in mind has excellent opportunities with the courses offered at Silver Creek. Donna Lewis focuses her attention on an assignment in advanced shorthand. Sheryl concentrates intently and lets her fingers fly during a timed writing in Typing II. Juanita and Margaret concentrate on a chapter in their drivefs education book. Drivers Practice Courtesy and Safety Driversh education has become a very popular course at Silver Creek. Through the patience and endurance of Mr. Briggs, many students have become skillful drivers. The course is offered in the studenfs study hall for one semester. The goal of every student is a driverhs Mr. Briggs is caught busily making the driving license at the age of 16. schedule for the oncoming day. After a; successful journey, the drivefs education car returns to its allotted space in the school parking lot. F reshmen and sophomores gain knowledge of physical fitness and first aid in the required courses, physical education andshealth; This year the girls were taught by a new faculty member, Mrs. Tucker. The boys engaged in such activities as boxing, golf, and basketball under the direction of Mr. Denton. A new activity was swimming, which was held in the fall at our new community pool. Practical Tasks Offer Careers In all of the Industrial Arts classes, boys are given the chance to make a career of different skills. These skills include welding, wood- working, drafting, and many more. Agriculture readies boys for farming careers and teaches them the scientific way of farming. Rick Dreyer and Jack Barnes practice skills of using a cutting torch. Note the method he uses to protect his tie. Bill Ruddell is observed by Stanley Tomes as he joins a board. i l e 4, Mr. Hester relaxes with shop student, J. D. Develops Domestic Skills Home Economics offers girls a chance to im- prove themselves and practice all of the do- mestic skills. The courses range from sewing to management of the budget. At Silver Creek, there are four years of Home Economics of- fered. The course is taught by Mrs. Diefenbach and Mrs. Jackson. The activities of these class- es are varied. They visited Madison, local jails, entertained students at New Hope School with a party, and the SC. Faculty with a dinner. XL 5 . Mrs. Jackson points out that the rewards of home ec classes are numerous. ttBut I want to carry them, Gail. I wrapped more packages than you did? Debbie Sidebottom dis- plays her artistic tal- ents in an oil painting of Mark Sherrill. Artists Add a Taste Of Culture Art student Sandy Shrader raises spirit by decorat- ing the fan bus. Testing her skills, Coleda Carver molds her ceram- ics project. One of the oldest histories in the world of today is in the form of art. This year Miss Caudill supervised the art department. The students explored many new regions of the art world such as ceramics, graphics, and wood block printing. Other tasks performed were the big paper loops and the ttrevivingh 0f the dragon. In addition to offering a rewarding class, it also gives a pleasant atmosphere to unwind and relieve any tensions that might have built up during the day. Row 1: M. Hauselman. Sponsor; J. Student Council Student opinion always plays an important part in the governing of a school, and an organiza- tion run by responsible students in cooperation with the schoolis administration is an appropri- ate outlet where the opinions can be heard and dealt with. The Student Council at SC is this governing body which promotes a friendly at- mosphere among students by means of foster- ing school spirit and class unity. Due to the efforts of our thirteen member council, the time may not be too distant when SC will have a foreign exchange student. There are four important qualities that form the basis for membership in the National Hon- or Society. They are: scholarship, leadership, character, and service. It is important for a student to have the ability to learn, to lead, and to serve others if that student is to find a place in the world today. Scholastically a sophomore student must have a 3.5 average for eligibility and juniors and seniors are eligible with a 3.0 average. There are restrictions to the number of members by percentage of class membership. Mrs. Noltemeyer and Miss Johnson serve as advisers for the club,s school as well as com- munity activities. ,. 4' i 3 54 i 4 2 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY OFFICERS: R. T. Green, President; Mary K.
