One of those teachers, Mr. Arthur Cortner, is teaching to- day at Silver Creek. At the second semester of that year, Miss Rowena Standiford joined A peaceful setting for a fine, new school-1926 that is. tGymnasium built in 1939. kl the faculty, and is also on the teaching staff today. Mr. J. C. Standiford was principal for the first five years, and after teaching at other schools for four years. came back here as principal until his death. His successor was Mr. Charles McBride who joined the school personnel in 1937. Busy people crowd the halls as they hurry from class to class. Students participate in the yearly spring clean-up by trimming the shrubs at Stout. Student secretaries gain helpful expgrience while working for teachers. Cadet teachers explore the field of'teaching by assisting in the elementary grades. 3W.$mem AND PLA YED .' . . Folk dancing an intiamural sport enjoyed at Silver Creek today. 'lhhmughnut the years, Silver Creek has ln'ml wnlurged several times. SC. was just 12 wars old when several young men decided that nur high school needed an addition. 50, n ilh lhe aid of a government loan, a new gym building was erected in 1939 alongside the uriginal Silver Creek building. In the school war of 1954-55 the band room, biology lleml-zltunv. and industrial arts room was meI unto the north side of Silver Creek. During the school year of 1956-57, the gym- nasium and original S.C. building were juinwl hy the addition of the bookstore, home wmnnmirs laboratory. science room, lower halls. and luckers, and the principahs office. Vs mmlhnent increased, this was still not mmugh room. The talk of a new high school was lueing whispered throughout the com- munity Soon this talk became someone,s dream and was put into an idea on paper. Mm. one needs only to look to the horizon In we this dream as a reality. School spirit is displayed by students at a hallgame. Situation: gloom, protest, and doubt. Silver Creek not only had to play four games in the tourney, but she also was scheduled to play Jeff .first and then New Albany. Was there any rhance for her Dragons; had she ttbitten off more than she could chew? Only time tand a couple of hullgamest could tell. The S.C. cheering section roared Wednesday night during the Silver Creek-Jeff game. Those who at- tmded the ballgame had the rare privilege of watch- ing a miracle in action. There was no holding back our Dragons; the Victory was ours, and well earned! After that, our school spirit completely changed: posters popped up all over school, new cheers were introduced, and students were bursting with pride. This change proved worthwhile, for the Dragons were still undefeated after our second sectional game. Victory over New Washington Saturday afternoon was almost assuredealmost, until Mother Nature stepped in. The high winds and deep snow showed no mercy for our Dragons. One by one, our players stomped into the field house and waited for Coach Green to appear. After waiting an hour to begin play, things looked pretty bad. With only six boys to play, Hr. Norman Beyl to coach, and the uniforms missing, the game began: and then, S.C. had another victory. Because of the severe snow storm, many S.C. fans were unable to attend either Saturday game. Several were stuck on the roads and listened to the games in their cars. Those who were at the fieldhouse were compelled to spend most of night there, or in houses in that area. Many others sat home filled with fear, their ears glued to the radio, waiting for the game to begin. After a long. hard struggle with those Pioneers, the final gun sounded. And the winner? Our own Silver Creek Dragonse1961 Sectional Champions! With new-found confidence and high hopes, Silver Creek,s thoughts turned to the regional. No one knew quite what to expect as the Saturday afternoon S.C.- Bedford game began. Although Bedford excelled in height, our determination overcame all; and S.C. added another victory to the list. Saturday nighfs ballgame with Corydon broke Sil- ver Creek,s chain of victories as Corydon won the regional. We lost the game, but we found something elseesomething more important. Our school spirit was regained. Silver Creek found out that even the hardest things to accomplish are not impossible, and that showing a little faith in a team can help it to go a long, long way. JUNIOR VARSITY TEAM-LEFT l02 Even though the freshman boys had a slow start this past season, the team began to take shape as the season progressed. Lacking height handicapped the boys but they still had the fire to play their best against the toughest foe. Their seasmi's record was five wins and six losses. Coach .VIakowsky often said this yealjs little Dragons had the must fight and spirit of any group in the last six years. Although this in- termediate half of the junior high team had an average record, three wins against two defeats, they played their way into the eighth grade I i spot exhibiting much ability. After the senior mem- bers of the Junior High team played a winning sea- son with eleven wins and four losses, this enthusias- tic team fought hard in the Jeff Tournament and was the runner-up.
