I977-'78 S artan Band Mr. Dick JohEon, vvho attended both the University of Minnesota and Mankato State University, came to us as our nevv Spartan Band Director after five years teaching experience in the Minneapolis Public Schools. Mr. Johnson became Sierra's band director after the retirement of Mr. Orville Hinshavv, vvho led the band for the last fourteen years, Mr. Johnson says that the Spartan Band is limited because of its size, but he has plans to build it up. l-le feels that the band offers students an opportunity to play and express themselves musically, and he is doing some recruiting to get more students involved. The band upheld some vvell-established traditions this year by performing at the Pomona Fair, the Whittier Band Jamboree, the Whittier Christmas Parade, and the lndio Date Festival. They also team up with the band and march in competition parades, including the Indio Date Fes- tival Parade and in the Whittier Christ- mas Parade. Besides all the hard work in preparing for each parade they took part in many fund raisers. 137
