ZIELD QEEMCE Founded in l9l4, The American Field Service is a non-profit or- ganization that helps spread understanding and good will between the United States andthe rest of The world by arranging for American students to live and study abroad, and by enabling foreign students to live and study inthe United States. This year Sierra has had The honor ot being host school to Jur- gen Eiche, a native of West Germany. During his stay here Jurgen has learned by first-hand experience just what American citizenship has to offer The Teenager of l965, In return, Sierra's students have been made more keenly aware of European culture, institutions, and prob- lems. German-American Ties have been strengthened Through This association. Last year, senior Amey Stewart was selected by A.F.S. to repre- sent Sierra in The Near East, and she spent eight weeks during The summer living with a typical Turkish family, becoming familiar with the country and its people. This coming summer, Lois Martin, the T965 exchange student, will be leaving for a foreign country which was unknown at the time the Oracle was published. Lois was selected from among several Spartan applicants on The basis of such personal qualities as grades, extracurricular activities, and leadership ability. Such an exchange program takes a great deal of planning and work by interested people inthe community, as well as inthe school, in order to be successful. The most ambitious project undertaken on campus this year was the presentation of a special spring fashion show, which was well received and contributed greatly to solving the financial problems of bringing over an exchange student for the T965-66 school year. at A rt Z 4.-.-.--... xtt l...,....- 'al Amey Stewart displays a typical Turkish cos- tume at a special assembly where she related the experiences of her summer in the Near East. 66 1rf ' LOIS MARTIN i965-'66 Summer AFS Representative AMEY STEWART 1964-'65 Summer AFS Representative Foreign students from throughout the district ioined Spartans at the International Club Christmas Party and tried their skill at breaking a Pinata.
