JURGEN EICHE To help raise funds for next years foreign exchange student, Hinshaw's Department Store spon- sored 'Springtime Debut, featuring the newest fashions for spring and summer, 88 CAN Dear Student Body, Let me take this opportunity to thank all of you for making it possible for me to be here. Spending this school year in your country and community, attending Sierra, and living with an American family are certainly experiences of im- mense value, and I know they will be the most in- teresting and remembered ones of my life. My home on this side of the globe is on Bacon Road in Whittier, and I know there are not enough words to express my thanktulness towards my won- derful family, the Macys. It was their willingness to host me, as well as Sierra's that made it possible for me to come here from Germany through AFS. When I arrived, I was treated lust like another son- Iike Jim and Marilyn's brother. At that moment, I knew that part of the AFS program had been suc- cessful. The other part was, of course, my stay here at Sierra. It is a great school and I will take home many ideas and surely some of the school spirit that you showed so enthusiastically at so many different oc- casions. I have made a lot of friends who helped me whenever they could. Upon returning to Germany, I will have many, many things to say and I will always tell the people in Germany about the friendly and understanding people in the United States. ZIELD QEEMCE Founded in l9l4, The American Field Service is a non-profit or- ganization that helps spread understanding and good will between the United States andthe rest of The world by arranging for American students to live and study abroad, and by enabling foreign students to live and study inthe United States. This year Sierra has had The honor ot being host school to Jur- gen Eiche, a native of West Germany. During his stay here Jurgen has learned by first-hand experience just what American citizenship has to offer The Teenager of l965, In return, Sierra's students have been made more keenly aware of European culture, institutions, and prob- lems. German-American Ties have been strengthened Through This association. Last year, senior Amey Stewart was selected by A.F.S. to repre- sent Sierra in The Near East, and she spent eight weeks during The summer living with a typical Turkish family, becoming familiar with the country and its people. This coming summer, Lois Martin, the T965 exchange student, will be leaving for a foreign country which was unknown at the time the Oracle was published. Lois was selected from among several Spartan applicants on The basis of such personal qualities as grades, extracurricular activities, and leadership ability. Such an exchange program takes a great deal of planning and work by interested people inthe community, as well as inthe school, in order to be successful.
