Ken Schlocker Drum Major Carol Gury Assistant Drum Maiarette Many hours of hard work and practice by the band resulted in spectacular half-time performances at Spartan football games. QP A maior innovation introduced into Spartan Band routines this year was the dancing band concept. Precision steps based on unique turning kicks were co-ordinated with skillful playing. The new look was instituted by Mr. William Dial, Sierra's new director, who came to this campus after directing bands in Illinois and Michigan, where his efforts had captured top awards in statewide musical competitions for twelve consecutive years. Mr. Dial, a classical pianist, received his Bachelor of Music de- gree from lllinois Wesleyan University and did his graduate work at the University of Michigan. When asked whether he had any plans for future bands, Mr, Dial answered with an emphatic yes. l-le plans to increase the size of the band from fifty to eighty members by recruiting incoming freshmen from the iunior high schools and by canvas- ing the Sierra campus for people with musical backgrounds. He would like also to add the quick step to the band's entering march as an extra flourish to its already fine performance.
