l Renate Gilbert Foreign Exchange Student American Weld Service The American Field Service program, adminis- tered Through local chapters, helps foreign students to gain an understanding of the United States, and enables American students to spread good will abroad by living with families and attending schools in some sixty foreign countries which participate in the field service each year. This year Sierra hosted its second foreign ex- change student, Renate Gilbert, who came from one of Brazil's largest cities, Rio de Janeiro. While in this country, Renate lived with the Douglas Stewart family and enioyed participating in many Typical American activities. Renate has concentrated her primary efforts in school on the study of foreign languages. She now speaks English, German, Span- ish, Portuguese, and some French. She feels that The field service is a great help to all involved, broaden- ing one's knowledge and understanding of other people. SPARTANS ABROAD As this book goes to press, Sierra has four rep- resentatives who are A.F.S. semi-finalists, juniors Janet Crooks, Amey Stewart, Elizabeth Shirley, and Kathy Bishop. Amey and Elizabeth have applied for the summer exchange program, while Janet and Kathy are hoping to go abroad for a full school year. To raise funds for a foreign exchange student for the i964-'65 school year, the Student Senate sponsored a fashion show in March. All proceeds went to the foreign exchange fund. l SEMI FINALISTS-From Juniors Janet Crooks, Elizabeth Shirley, Amey Stewart, and Kathy Bishop, two Renate Giloert models a typical festivai costume will be chosen to represent Sierra as foreign exchange students next year. worn in her native country of Brazil.
