The United States has always had a tradition of universal education because its people realized that an informed citizenry is essential in order for a democracy to work. As a result of this educational tradi- tion, the United States has one of the highest literacy rates in the world. The nation's public schools are controlled by the various states, which are able to plan programs that best meet the needs of people in different parts of the country. The students of Sierra benefit greatly from this localized system of education, for it provides not only generalized academic material, but also academic courses of special benefit to Californians. Academics is an important part of the curriculum offered Spartans. A wide variety of academic courses is offered to the student: everything from iournalism to advanced biology. In addition to course offerings there are many scholastic clubs active on campus, ranging from the statewide California Scholarship Federation to the local creative writing club. ln recognition of the students who receive A's or B's in all their classes, the Spartan Honor Scroll has been created. As each Spartan does his homework, opens his books to study, or listens to a lecture by his instructor, he is helping to maintain the literacy of his country and the great ideal of a free education for all.
