DAN DWYER Captain Sporting new scarlet and white uniforms Sierra's Varsity basketball team took to the court for the first game of the season against the El Rancho Dons, emerging victorious in the pre-league battle. The next several prac- tice encounters with most of the district teams resulted in an impressive winning streak for coach Len Craven's cagers until they were defeated by Cal Hi in the La Habra Christ- mas Basketball Tournament. The team lost the season kick-off game to La Mirada, and after a series of stormy com- petitions, ended the season with three wins and seven losses. Bright moments in the '63-'64 story included wins Over a- strong Pioneer team and eventual league champ, Mayfair. Contributing greatly to the team effort were forward Dan Dwyer and guard Rick Lidster. Despite the lack of many wins, the Spar- tans played sound, fundamental ball and finished as well as could be expected from an inexperienced team. The season's tough schedule provided a good training ground for many sophomore ,and iunior hopefuls, who, next year, could possibly rewrite the record books.

Coach Robert Minier commented that the championship was not due to any one outstanding in- dividual, but to a great team effort. Players who were instru- mental in this fine team play were John Farwell, Manuel Macias, Dick Hall, and Mike Anderson. In addition to winning league, the team set a new scoring record of 89 points against Pioneer. Coach Jim Naughton's Bee basketballers, sparked by Wayne Wilson's record breaking 33 point effort, finished the season's encounters with a 9-II record and a third place league stand- ing. Co-captains Pat Triggs and Sheldon Fink aided in dazzling team play and a fast break, which often left opposing team members standing backcourt as two points were scored. 1566 BEE LEAGUE SCORES OPPONENT SIERRA La Mirada .... 53 56 Mayfair ...... 63 6I Pioneer ...... 56 65 Artesia ...... 57 78 La Serna ..... 69 62 La Mirada .... 42 38 Mayfair ...... 70 65 Pioneer ...... 72 52 Artesia ...... 64 73 La Serna ..... 66 60 BEE BASKETBALL-Bottom Row: Pat Triggs, Joe Kiskis, Tom Sack, Dave Niemi, Joe Moreno, and Sheldon Fink.
