While The scores were not impressive at The start, The Spartans gained valuable skills and experience that eventually en- abled Them To end season play by capturing The Second Place spot in The Surburban League. After a surprising 13-7 upset victory over a pow- erful Mayfair Team, Sierra handled neighboring Piov neer, 20-O, and cross-Town rival La Serna, 13-O, before beating Artesia in a hard fought, 14-12 con- Test, putting The Spartans in second place, one game behind La Mirada. Four records, that were established in 1961, were broken This season. Don Price completed 541, of The passes attempted, breaking The old record of 411, set by former Spartan, John Hayek. Richard Leon set Three new records for one season-Pass Receptions, catching 22 passes Thrown To him, Yardage Gained by Passing, totaling 332 yards, and for Touchdown Passes Caught, receiving 4 touchdown passes during The season.
