l Mr. Lane discusses the goals and objectives of the Social Studies Department with parents on Back to School Night. And The TruTh shall make you free -a belief recorded Thousands of years ago and preserved for all who would hear and see. The wisdom of This sTaTemenT has noT been losT, iT has guided counTless ge-nerciTions as They worked and sTrove Toward a beTTer world. Every counTry is ready To honor iTs heroes who show valor in Times of sTress and conflicT, buT The sacrifices These men and women make would be of no avail if There were noT Thousands of unsung heroes who dedicaTe Themselves in every daily siTuaTion To The preservaTion and promulgaTion of The ideals for which The sacrifices were made. The person we are honoring is such an individual. Because he believes so firmly in American ideals, he noT only defended Them physically during World War ll, buT he also lives Them in his daily life by voTing, serving on commiTTees, and parTicipaTing acTively in all communiTy work. His quieT confidence in America has been an inspiraTion To his sTudenTs as well as To The communiTy To which he devoTes so much of his Time. Born and raised in New England among The scenes of many of America's greaTesT accomplishmenTs, This educaTor has been endowed noT only wiTh The ideals of our foreTaThers buT also wiTh Their spiriT. Eleven years ago he broughT To This disTricT his abiliTy To Teach To his sTudenTs The ideals of Americanism which can mold Their lives as adulT ciTizens of The Unifed STaTes. Since Sierra's opening, he has TaughT boTh UniTed STaTes HisTory and California HisTory. In addiTion, he is now chairman of The enTire Social STudies DeparTmenT. In recogniTion of his excellence he became one of TwenTy Teachers selecTed from all parTs of California To aTTend a special Two-week Bill of RighTs seminar aT The UniversiTy of California in The summer of T963. PaTrick Henry said, I have buT one lamp by which my feeT are guided, and ThaT is The lamp of experience. I know no way of judging The fuTure buT by The pasT. This SparTan educaTor Teaches his sTudenTs The ways of The pasT ThaT Those sTudenTs may beTTer cope wiTh The fuTure. Here is a man who spends his life aT an occupaTion marked by hard work and someTimes frusTraTions in order To help young people undersTand and appreciaTe The American ideals under which They live. For his ouTsTanding conTribuTion To Sierra's educaTional sTandards, we, The STudenT Body, dedicaTe The 1964 Oracle To Mr. Howard Lane.
