After many months of deliberation, they agreed to honor a man of their own time, an American poet and fellow Quaker, John Greenleaf Whittier. During the seventy-fifth anniversary of our city, we should take a moment to reflect on this man whose name we mention every day of our lives. Being familiar with his Barefoot Boy and Snow- bound, we tend to think of Whittier only as a rustic poet. But Whittier was something more — he was the poet of the anti-slavery cause. He supported labor reform and wrote stirring chronicles of the vivid pages in American history — wars, explorations, discoveries. He was a fighter as well as a farmer, an idyllic dreamer as well as a breaker of idols. Throughout these pages, lines from the works of John Greenleaf Whittier accompany pictures of places familiar to us in the city with which he felt proud to share his name. my name I Qive to thee   The name rny infant ear first heard Breathed softly with a mother ' s kiss His mother ' s own, no tenderer word My father spoke than this. No child have I to bear it on; Be thou its keeper; let it take From gifts well used, and duty done New beauty for thy sake. The fair ideals that out ran My halting footsteps, seek and find; The flawless symmetry of man The poise of heart and mind. Yet when did age transfer to youth The hard-earned lessons of today? Each life must learn the taste Each foot must feel its way. r: } K ' ■Dear town, for whom Stars shine, and What can my ( My winter to rs are born, irds sing, to morn A life T ' , voUW pure intent. President To Sierra ' s Student Body, Speaking for the Cabinet and our entire student government, I thank you for letting us serve Sierra. It has been a rev arding experience for all of us and one that we shall always remember. The Cabinet has not always agreed on topics of discussion, nor has the student body always agreed with its student government. Certainly this is as it should be. In order for a democracy to flourish, its members must constantly be concerned and active in its government. I am proud to say that I have repre- sented a school that is concerned about its government and has spoken out for what it believes. Our offices have been trying ones at times, but we have attempted to stand up for what we thought was best for the entire student body. Often times this has conflicted with the desires of individuals. But this is the way a democracy must function. I wish next year ' s Cabinet the very best and hope they are granted insight into the core of the problems they may face. These officers have the responsibility of approv- ing expenditures and budgets, planning assemblies, organizing all student body functions, and. represent- ing Sierra at other schools. moment one gets off the bus 41 ORACle CHERYL REINHARDT Editor-in-Chief Spurred on by cries of Hurry up, we have a deadline to meet!, the twenty-two members of the yearbook staff gallantly waded through the two hundred pages of copy, pictures, and headlines that compose this year ' s Oracle. It often seemed as if editor Cheryl Reinhardt was the only staff mem- ber who understood that unknown quantity grandly referred to as The Plan, but the others tried. The business staff tried handling staggering amounts of money; the copy staff tried to describe things that hadn ' t happened yet; the photographers tried to be everywhere at once; and the layout staff tried to outguess everybody else. Probably the most tried amid the frantic activity was Mr. Smith ' s patience. His often repeated phrase, I like your idea — do it over, was the embodiment of despair for 22 pairs of ears daily. In those last hectic days before the book went to press, however, even the most optimistic were amazed as the isolated components miraculously began to fall into place. Then, with solemn ceremony, the last stamp was slapped on the last envelope and the book was off to the printer. Our purpose as members of the Oracle staff has been to record as best we could this year of your high school life. As you review the year through these pages, we hope the memories you find are pleasant ones. The problems of publishing an edition of the Sword and Shield every two weeks are unique to the members of ML lOO ' s fourth estate, for in no other place on campus are students engaged in such activity as this. Gallons of paste and glue, reams of copy paper, and a hundred typewriter ribbons annually are not all that go into a school newspaper. The frantic frenzied hunt for the right word to describe that lost football game or the big question mark in the mind as to whether or not the issue will be full of holes — or even if it will appear on its regular Friday noon schedule — are all a vital part of every reporter and editor ' s life as a Spartan journalist. No one else can experience the relief of a dead- line past and a paper gone to press; but neither can anyone other than a reporter feel the satisfaction of seeing his story in print. Through a series of interviews each girl was rated on the basis of personality, poise, and scholarship. As Rose Princess, Sue appeared at various civic functions, including the Whittier Christmas Parade, a dinner at the Hacienda Country Club, and a Bridal Fashion Show at Hinshaw ' s Depart- ment Store. The high point of her reign came when she and six other girls from the Whittier high schools depicted a bridal party atop the prize winning Whittier float. Two weeks were spent in collecting clothes and toys for the new Fairview State Hospital for the mentally retarded; three car-loads of materials were sent to the hospital. The recipients expressed their gratitude to the entire student body for its generosity. A great deal of work was put in by the council members in organizing the Junior-Senior Prom. It was successful due to their efforts and the support of the junior and senior classes. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who helped to make this a successful year. The day commenced with a special assembly attended by students and alumni. Tension mounted as the candidates for queen were pre- sented one by one and reached a climax when Alicia Arredondo was crowned the 1962 Homecoming Queen. Throughout the day the Queen and her four prin- cesses carried out their official duties of greeting alumni and promoting spirit. That evening the royal court reigned over the La Mirada game and concluded the day ' s activities with the traditional homecoming dance. ' A Distant Bell, this year ' s winter play, rang out loud and clear to enthusiastic audiences for three eve- nings starting on November 3. The play, written by Katherine Morrill, told the sometimes happy, sometimes sad story of a woman and her three daughters and the trials and tribulations of their lives. The final scene, which brought the play to an almost tragic conclusion, showed how people can sometimes be drawn toward the abyss of human disaster when they are misunderstood by others. This year, a desire to learn and on intense competitive spirit have combined to produce an outstanding athlete who is well qualified for this honor. Although his athletic career began much the same js most athletes, it wasn ' t long before his ability began to stand out. In football he gained a long list of honors. In both his junior and senior years he was named to the All-District Team and was a unanimous All-Suburban League choice. As a senior, he was honored as the league ' s Lineman of the Year. To climax his football career at Sierra, he was chosen a member of the large school, AII-C.I.F. Football Team. This outstanding player also excels in wrestling. In his last two years at Sierra he was the Suburban League Champion in his weight division and both years advanced into the C.I.F. wrestling finals. It is seldom that an individual gains so many honors. Those who know him, however, realize that if any one person deserves these accolades, it is LARRY LOPEZ, Athlete of the Year, 1963. 178 The nine athletes pictured below were named the most outstanding players of the year in their particular sports by the coaching staff at Sierra. They received this distinction on the basis of their athletic, sportsmanship, and leadership abilities. Baseball: TIM YOUNG U. Certamly one reason we made it was the help and co-operation we received from many people on and off campus. As my last official duty, I would like to take this opportunity to thank them individually. Without the experienced guidance of our adviser, Mr. Richard B. Smith, this book could not hove existed. He patiently spent numerous hours of hard work in order to help complete this book of Spartan memories. My special gratitude goes to my staff, who have put in many hours of hard work. Judy Litten, my Assistant Editor, was second in command and helped the staff in many different ways. Copy Editor Judy Johns and the people who worked with her, Kathy Goble, Elizabeth Page, Dennis Borell, Mike Green, and Dave Stouffer, had one of the most difficult jobs in completing the book. With the artistic talents of Susan Neill, Layout Editor, and Sharon Watson, Art Editor, designs for the book were easily completed. This couldn ' t hove been done without help from Donna Daniels, Nancy Hall, Tom Cooper, Hal Gilbert, and Barb Scott. I would next like to thank Phyllis West, Sports Editor, and her staff, Donna Bauman, Gerri Fitzgerald, and Paul Sapienza, for doing a fabulous job in putting together the sports section. Where would we be without the help of our Head Photographer, Jim Henkel, and Photo Editor, Kathy Hubbling? They worked many extra hours with photographic assistance from Richard Freymond and Paul Johnson. Of course we couldn ' t possibly have done without our Business Manager, Carol Wright, who was assisted by Martha Reed. The two of them, working as a team, took charge of all the finances for the book. This was a gigantic job in itself. The administration and faculty both deserve recognition for all the work they have contributed in trying to aid the staff. Last, but not least, I would like to thank the off-cam.pus people for their help. Watson Studios and their photographers, Mr. Robert Watson, Mr. Paul Morris, Mr. William Fisher, and Mr. Orin Van Dyke, took many pictures for the book. The S. K. Smith Company was responsible for the covers, while the Taylor Publishing Company printed the book for us. I would also like to thank the Thomas Brothers Map Co. for letting us use their map of Whittier on the end-sheets of the book. The Whittier Public Library, for letting us use their picture of John. Greenleaf Whittier, should also be thanked. Thanks, also to the many businessmen who purchased advertising in the book this year. Finally, thanks to you, the Student Body, for making this book possible with all of your co-operation and participation in the many activities.
