I l ,-wr gf 'J ' ' -,, ' .-S .' 0-.,N Og In I848 the war between the United States and Mexico ended with California being transferred to the U.S. Everywhere land titles issued by the Spanish and Mexican governments came under dispute. ln I88I a U.S. land commission cut down a land claim granted by Mexico to Juan Crispin Perez in I833. By this ' act the Whittier area became public land. After that various people filed homestead claims to most of the Whittier Area, but by late I88l most of these 'claims came into the possession of John M. Thomas, a farmer from Indiana. On his land he built the first house in Whittier, a simple frame structure, which still stands at 522 E. Camilla Street. Mustard Ranch. as the Thomas Ranch was known because wild mustard grew in the spring as high as a man on horseback, became a southern California landmark. In I887, Aquilla H. Pickering, a member of the Society of Friends. bought the Thomas Ranch and together with John Painter and Jonathan Bailey, began to sell lots to Quakers who desired to form a colony in Cali- fornia. Since that time, many people of all faiths have come to Whittier. The brown hills have been subdivided. streets cut and houses of all sizes and descriptions have appeared, making Whittier one of the outstanding residential communities in the Southland.
