If fhese hills could only speak fo us, whaf a fale fhey could relafe abouf fhe fabulous changes fhey have seen. They could' recall fhe days when Indian hunfers visifecl fhem searching for small game. Then fhere was fhe day when fhe firsf whife men, brown robed friars, firsf came info fhe area as fhey looked for suifable places fo found fhe firsf missions. From fhaf fimle. on 'rhe hills became used fo seeing people of all sorfs. Almosf every week fheyfaw riders come info fhe area looking for sfray caffle or wifnessed weary fravelers frudging along fhe dusfy EI Camino Real on fheir way fo fhe liffle pueblo of Los Angeles. A Cerfainly fhey would menfion fhe day when fhe firsf seffler came fo sfay. l-low clearly fhey would recall when work was progressing on fhe dignified liffle ranch house fhaf was fo become known as fhe Thomas Ranch. Buf fhis was iusf a sfarf. lf seemed fhaf fhis one small beginning unleashed a whole flood of new sefflers. A group of Quakers arrived and sfaifed a liffle communify which fhey named affer a greaf poef oflfheir faifh. John Greenleaf Whiffier. As fhe years wenf by, fhe liffle communify began fo resemble a fown 'as vacanf lofs were filled up wifh buildings of all sorfs--churches, homes, schools. businesses, and civic and recreafion cenfers. The populafion doubled. re-doubled, and doubled again as people flocked 'ro fhe peaceful communify. And whaf abouf fhe hills? If was only a maffer of fime before fhe spread of civilizafion would climb fo fhe very heighfs of fheir brush covered cresfs. Today fhey wear ribbons of concrefe and clusfers of homes on fheir heads. Whaf would fhe hills say abouf whaf fhey have seen if fhey'could speak? Surely fhey would nof fry fo forecasf whaf marvelous fhings fhe fufure would have in sfore for fhem. Buf they would probably all agree fhaf fime has been kind fo fhe liffle communify. Surely, fhey would say, fhings have become Bigger and Beffer wifh every passing day. s I . l
