One of The lasT baffles was foughf in The river bed of The San Gabriel River lnow The Rio Hondo Riverl below The bluffs of presenT day Monfebello. There on January 8, I845. a combined U.S. force led by Commodore Roberf F. Sfoclcfon and Colonel Sfephen Kearney crossed The river from The easT To engage a Californian force led by Jose Maria Flores, which commanded The opposife bluffs. The To reTreaT Toward Los Angeles, where a final baTTle was foughf on January IOTh. Affer ThaT The Californians laid down Their arms and surrendered To Capfain John C. Fremonf and California finallybecame a U.S. Californians, were finally forced possession.
