'Lv From the time Columbus discovered the New World, the government of Spain had been interested in the new land mainly as a source of riches. When early explorations of North America revealed no riches. the Spanish government turned its interest to Central and South America. For over two centuries no attempt was made to settle Alta California. as the present state of California was then called. In the l760's Spain became aware that Russia and Britain might try to settle California. so it was decided that Alta California should be colonized. Qn March 24. I769, an expedition under Captain Gaspar de Portola left Baia California for the north In order to care for the religious needs of the settlers and to help civilize and Christianize the Indians. a group of Franciscan missionaries led by Fray Junipero Serra accompanied the group. In California these churchmen were to eventually form a chain of missions that stretched from San Diego in the south to Sonoma. north of San Francisco Bay. These missions. which were like small towns, composed most of the early settle- ments in California. The fourth mission to be founded was San Gabriel in I77l and was the first settlement in the Los Angeles area. From this mission in I78l. a small group of settlers who had traveled from Old Mexico, set out to .found a small pueblo that was to become one of the largest cities in North America-Los Angeles. It was the first of a great religious movement in this section that has continued unwealcened to the present day. Many great churches of all denominations stand as living proof of this tradition as expressed by the people of the greater Whittier area.
