Mya AWA I I I' ,rw Many years ago before the days of Columbus a book was written which became a best seller throughout the known world. The book The Deeds of Esplandian, told of an island a land of promise filled with the sweet perfume of wildflowers. Birds filled the sunny vales with sweet songs and life was a paradise of peace and plenty. This island paradise was ruled by an amazon queen named Califia. Long afterward when the Spanish explorers sailed the west coast of the new world they found a land so sunny and beautiful that it reminded them of the land ruled by Califia. To this land they gave the name of California. This beautiful land has known many rulers and peoples since its discovery. The bearded fur-hatted Russians who wanted to make a fur-trading center- the gay colorful Mexicans who feasted and danced in the streets and took their siestas in the afternoon- the ambitious men who made California a separate republic- and finally the practical responsible Americans who made California a land of industrial and agricultural magnitude. The golden land of California has all that was attributed to its namesake and more. Where else do barren desert and high mountains lie within a few hundred miles of each other? Where else can a vacationer go skiing, swimming, and hunting in the same day? What person would not fall in love with this land of sunlight after he has seen snow-capped mountains rising thous- ands of feet from a barren desert, or has looked a hundred feet down a sheer cliff at a frothing, sea? California, golden California-SUNNY CALIFORNIA, the theme of this yearbook, we are forever grateful to you for the beauty and enjoyment with which you have filled our lives. MR. EUGENE O. Sierra High School was only a diagram on a drawing board, t of the Whittier Union High School District began to look for capable and experienced people to organ- ize and direct the yet-unborn school. From El Rancho High School they chose a man of experience and intelligence, and on his shoulders they placed the responsibility of directing the new school. From Whittier High School they chose a woman with a special gift of understanding, and gave to her the iob of guiding all the girls of this new bastion of learning. lt was proven that they chose well, for in view of their excellent records, they were recently selected for higher positions. The man is now the Assistant Superintendent of the Whittier Union High 'd ttice of Pioneer High School, the latest addition to the district. When it was learned that they were gon g , f b th of these educators were friends of the student body. Yet there was an air of happiness, School District, and the woman has been chosen to head the gui ance o 'n to leave there was sadness around the Spartan Cam- pus, or o for we, the Student Body of Sierra High School, know that they have gone on to even greater things. So, in gratitude for the many selfless contributions they have made for our school, and for us as individuals, we gratefully dedicate this, the 1959 Oracle, to you, Mr. Eugene O. Wineinger, Assistant Superintendent of the Whittier Union High School District, and to you, Mrs. Madeline Sorensen, Vice-Prin- cipal of Pioneer High School. Senior Problems teaches the workings of the government at the local, state and national level. It also shows the student how to be wise in his role as a consumer, and to cope with the problems which may face him in marriage and family life. But whether we meet or whether we part lFor our ways are past our knowingl, A pledge from the h'eart to its fellow heart On the ways we all are going! Here's luck! For we know not where we are going. With a steady swing and on open brow We have tramped the ways together, But we're clasping hands at the crossroads now ln the Fiend's own night for weather, And whether we bleed or whether we smile In the leagues that lie before us The ways of life are many a mile And the dark of Fate is o'er us. Here's luck! And a cheer for the dark before us! You to the left and I to the right, For the ways of men must sever, And it well may befor a day and a night And it well may be forever! In the teeth of all winds blowing. -Richard Hovey Rf SE PF INCESS C W As the City of Whittier float pass- ed maiestically down Colorado Boulevard in the 1959 annual Tour- nament of Roses, Sierra High School Princess Donna Goetze smiled and waved at the crowd. This was the climax to an adventure for Donna which began with a slip of paper which informed her that she was being considered, along with 19 other girls, as a candidate for Sierra Rose Princess. When the judges se- lected seven finalists, Donna was among them, and shortly afterward, she was notified that she had been chosen to serve as one'of the five princesses. She then participated in a publicity campaign with represen- tatives of the other district schools, which included luncheons, speeches, newspaper and magazine publicity. Donna represented Sierra well at this activity, and carried the Spartan name to a position of even greater respect and pride. Donna Goetze, Rose Parade Princess A ni . f Ullllfllill The City of Whittier float carrying Donna and the princesses from the four other district high schools passes packed bleachers along the line of march. 1 X L ,Az'!w+ I A X - .
