He was born Ititi miles north of Charleston in the city of Barnwvll. South Carolina Moore is a 1073 graduate of the Universitv of South Caro ltna where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Business and a minor in Advertising. Moore enlisted in the US Navv in February 1975 as a Hull Technician, completed boot camp in San Diego. Ca. and he was assigned to USS ALBANY CCG-101. He reported to Offi- cer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island in 1976. subse- quently receiving orders to USS TACAMO IPG-92i, where he served as Engineer officer from May 1977 to August 1978. LCDR Moore then served aboard USS PETERSON IDD-9693 and USS MOUNT WHITNEY tLCC-201 as Navigation Offi- cer. He then reported to the Naval Safety Center in Norfolk. VA where he served until February 1984. Next he attended Main Propulsion Assistant School at NETC in Newport, prior to reporting aboard USS INCHON QLPH-121 where he was Main Propulsion Assistant until August 1985. He became Engineer Officer aboard USS WILLIAM V. PRATT CDDG-441 until November 1987. Prior to reporting to USS SIERRA QAD-181. Moore was the Material Officer for Commander Cruiser Destroyer Group Two Staff in Charleston. Moore has been awarded several Navy Awards including: Navy Commendation Medal with Gold Star, Sea Service Rib- bon. fsix awardsl, Navy Expeditionary Medal. Battle E. and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. LCDR Moore resides in Charleston with his wife Cansas. He has two children - Alison. age nine and Amanda, age seven. Lieutenant Commander Jeffrey Butts was born in Groton. ' 5-'JL I- ' LCDR J.M. Butts January 89-July 90 x,I Connecticutt and is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland. Upon graduation he attended the flrst ba- sic surface warlare officer course at Newport, Rhode Island prl- or to reporting to USS MACDONOUGH QDDG-391, homeport Charleston. South Carolina. After serving in a variety of billets, he was ordered to the pre-commissioning crew of USS NAS- SAU CLHA-43 as Assistant Combat Systems Officer. Later, Lieutenant Commander Butts was assigned to the Fleet Ocean Surveilance Center at CINCLANTFLT as an analyst and watch officer. Upon completion of Department Head School in Newport, Rhode Island. LCDR Butts reported to USS RICHARD I.. PAGE KFFG-Si as Weapons Officer and later received orders to the pre-commissioning team of USS IOWA CBB-61, where he served as Gunnery and, later, Assistant Operations Officer. Selected to attend the Naval Postgraduate School at Monterey, California, Lieutenant Commander Butts received his Master of Science degree in Intelligence and then reported to USS SAI- PAN tLHA-23 as Combat Systems Officer. LCDR Butts served as Executive Officer of USS SIERRA tAD18i prior to reporting to Mine Division 125 in Charleston, South Carolina. LCDR Butts is authorized to wear the Navy Commenda tion Medal. Navy Achievement Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation and various campaign and service medals. Lieutenant Commander Butts is married to the former Dianne Robinson, a native of Charleston, South Carolina. He and Dianne have three children: Kevin, Andria, and Travis

49' 'iii MMCMISWI D. Echols April '90-Present MMCMISWI M. Riley June '88-May '90 Command Master Chiefs Donald Ray Echols was born in Moultrie, GA on June 18, 1953. He attended Recruit Training Command, Orlando, FL In 1972 and Machinist's Mate 'A' School in 1972. Following graduation, Echols served on USS EUGENE A. GREENE QDDR-7111. USS PUTNAM QDD-7573 and USS WILLIAM C. LAWE QDD-7631. He left sea duty in April 1977 and attended the Instructor Training Course at Fleet Training Center, Norfolk, VA. He was then assigned to the staff of Damage Control School there. Returning to sea duty in May 1980 on board USS SEL- LERS, he was advanced to Chief Machinist's Mate and Senior Chlef Petty Officer prior to leaving USS SELLERS. Senior Chlef Echols was instrumental in the ship being awarded the Engineering 'E' and the Battle Efficiency 'E' ln August 1985, he attended the Senior Enlisted Acad- emy at Newport, R.l., then he was assigned to NAVSUR- FLANT Readiness Support Group. Charleston, S.C. While sta- tioned at RSG, he was frocked for Master Chief Petty Officer in 1987. Master Chief Echols returned to sea as Engineering Group Supervisor on USS BLAKELY QFF-10721 in late 1987 and also USS MAHAN QDDG-421 in 1988. Master Chlef Echols was transferred to USS SIERRA in April 1990, joining the ship in Gaeta, Italy as Command Mas' ter Chief. He is married to the former Vadene Helms of Lancaster, S.C. They have two daughters, Sara Courtney and Emily Rae. On May 2, 1990 MMCM fSWl Martin J. Riley departed USS SIERRA QAD-181 for the last time enroute to the states for his retirement from active naval service after 22 years. Master Chief Riley was formally retired on June 30, 1990. Martin J. Riley Jr. began his naval career at Recruit Training Command, San Diego, California, followed by Ma- chinist's Mate A School, graduating in November of 1968. After which he served aboard numerous naval vessels includ- ing the newly commissioned USS SAIPAN ILHA-21. While serving on SAIPAN from October 1977 to Novem- ber 1982 he was advanced to Chief Petty Officer and was as- signed as the Main Propulsion Division Leading Chlef Petty Officer. He next transferred to USS JULIUS QFFG-61 November 1982 where he was appointed Command Leading Chief and later advanced to Senior Chief Machinist's Mate. While stationed at NAVSURFLANT Readiness Support Group, his performance resulted in his being advanced to Mas- ter Chief Petty Officer. ln June of 1988 he transferred to USS SIERRA IAD- 18l where he served as Command Master Chief. During his 22 years of active naval service MMCM fSWl Riley received the following awards: Navy Commendation Medal. Navy Achievement Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy Good Conduct Medal, Navy Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
