Text from Pages 1 - 276 of the 1989 volume:

FATHER HUGH HINES A Saint of a Man saint can be defined as a holy person who is patient and kind. Although Fr. Hugh Hines is not up for canonization - at least not to our knowledge e- the same qualities portray the man who has been both a good administrator and a friend to Siena. He has helped the school grow and develop in many ways. There has been an increase in the number of applications and enrollment, enlarged phys- ical grounds, more educational programs, and increased national recognition. Not only has Fr. Hugh developed the school in these tangible aspects. but he has also helped incorporate the Franciscan tradition into every aspect of our lives at Siena. Fr. Hugh is a visible component at Siena. He can readibiy be seen walking around campus, talking to students. and keeping the vitaiity in his surroundings. Fr. Hugh has always had this open attitude even before he became president. Fr. Hugh taught religion at Siena as well as holding other administrative roles. Such roles included Resident Director, Director of Health Services, acting Chaplin and assistant to the president. This diverse background gave Fr. Hugh a well-rounded basis on which to lead the school. Fr. Hugh has also been involved with many community activities. He has made his presence greatly felt both in Siena. in the community, and the ripples of his success have grown nationwide as graduates go out into the world. Fr. Hugh's humor, personality, and exceiient leadership abilities have made Siena what it is today. May his successor continue his lead and have the vision to take Siena into the 2ist century. Thank you Fr. Hugh for all you have given Siena. We will miss you. Fr. Hugh w An academic leader Fr. They, of course, do deserve credit for their tremendous season. They brought pride and recognition to Loudonvilie. The name Saints, how ever, goes beyond the athletic department. There is a certain aura, a feeling that it brings about. What makes Siena different than any other campus? its the people here. There's a real sense of community. We rejoice together, pray together and mourn togethert There need not be a real occasion. If thereis nothing going on of any importance the people at Siena will find a reason to be together. There are those times when we gather as a large group: at mass, at games, dances, and parties. Then there are those times when the closeness of Siena is even more apparent. When someone you don't know says hello to you in passing. when you help someone with a tough course, or when you just listen to someone who wants to talk. That's when the spirit of Siena comes shining through. Like the real Saints, each one of us can give a little love to someone everyday in all we do. 0 ur theme this year is when the Saints come marching in. There is a community in which we reside and which we must help in any way we can. For different people this takes different forms. One of the main activities on campus is Big BrothertBig Sisters. This is a way of directly helping someone in need. The kids love having someone they can taik to and do things with. The Brothers and Sisters also get a great deal out of the experience. it's a chance to share their love and their time with someone who truly appreciates it. There are many other ways in which the students at Siena volunteer their time. Those who tutor, teach CCD, voiunteer in hospitals, adopt grandparents. and other forms of volunteer work truly share their God given gifts. Some give to others by giving gifts to the elderly nuns or needy chiidren at Christmas time, giving gifts of food, or donating money to a worthy cause. All of these are ways in which we spread the Siena spirit to the community. May that Spirit never diminish. E ven beyond our campus the charitable works Top: Ring side seats Above: Whitey at work. This year Siena has put itself on the map. Alright, so maybe it was because welve been blamed for contaminating the rest of the world, but at least were known. People may recall Siena as Oh, yeah, that school with the measles . How many of you have intro- duced yourself, said you go to Siena and have people take three steps back? Nice feeling isnit it? But alas, this too will pass but Siena is now known. it may have posed an inconvenience for some, but for most it was kind of amusing. There were exceptions, however, especially those who actually contracted the disease. To them those spots were no joke. it was also disheartening not to be able to watch our star basketball players in action. it was also quite interesting going to classes. Halt! Who goes there? Let me see your pink card! Did any- one teel alienated? it was almost getting to the point of big posters saying 'No admittance to Siena Students and on campus no admit- tance to those without their shots. Well, at least it made the year memorable. No longer will they refer to Siena as the measily little school in Loudonviile, NY. 8 - Opening Opening - 9 fsomeone asked you to name aii of the positive aspects of Siena at the top of the list may be things like the peopie, the parties and numerous other activities. The faculty and administration may be on the list but usually not the first people to come to mind. Think about it for a minute. The professors at Siena are pretty spe- cial people. Many of them are saints in their own right just for dedicating their lives to teaching. The teachers at Siena go out of their way to help their students. There is a sense that they really care. They are available for academic help but also for a lot more. Many teachers piay duai roles as coaches. mentors, or just friends. Next time you want to compiain about a lousy grade just stop and remem- ber all that the professors have given you. Thank them for being there and for preparing us for the future. We have received a great many gifts from God and from one another. There is also one thing that we did not receive this year to any great extent. Yes, it was snow. Quite a change from last winterts record 90 inches to this season's lack of precipi- tation, It can be taken as both a blessing and a curse. There was no major snow so no one had to dig their cars out too many times and it didntt reach artic temperatures often either. On the other hand, there were no extra days off on account of snow, the ski slopes were a little slow and there was little, if any, traying on the golf course. No matter what the weather condi- tions are, the fire at Siena stays a glow and shines for the world to see. I ooking back at this year we can remember many things that we have al' 12 . Left: Coach Mike Deane Below: Rick - up on top! In an effort to increase the difficulty of the basketball schedule, Siena began its season with three non league games with top ranked opponents. After a heartbreaking 87-85 loss to Bowling Green, the men rallied back for an exciting win over Big East contender, Pittsburgh. Billed early as the biggest win of Siena basketball history, the team gained national recognition. Coach Mike Deane stressed to the media not to expect too much from Siena's club. This proved futile because the win over Pitts- burgh immediately raised the expectations of the fans and media. The club then proved it was worthy of such high praise by storming through the NAC with only one loss. Although things were going well on the court, problems began to arrive off the court. On February 10 the NYS Board of Health announced that Siena was in the middle of a measles epidemic. This epidemic put the future of the season in jeopardy. The team would be unable to play anymore home games. Instead, all home games would be played on a neutral floor with no fans. Siena once again came into the spot light as word of the team playing without fans spread throughout the counrty. These condi- tions, however, did not stop the team as they went on to the NAC regular season. The Championship game of the NAC Tournament against Boston U. was televised on ESPN. The game was exciting and only decided in the last seconds giving Siena the victory and its first ever bid to the NCAA Tournament. School officials used this spotlight to announce the new name of Siena athletic teams - the Saints. Men's Basketball - 135 The joy of the bid was supressed slightly with the revelation that Siena would be playing thirteenth ranked Stanford in Greensboro, NC Five busioads of students made the 12 hour ride to support the Siena Saints. The game itself was tremendous. Marc Brown played the game of his life scoring over 30 points to lead the Saints to an incredible 80-78 victory over Stanford. Siena fans went crazy. Celebration broke out all over campus. Soon Siena became the toast of the basketball world and Greensboro community. Everyone soon became a Siena fan and could not get their hands on enough Siena paraphernalia. Although the fans were going wild, the team was tiring and was unable to earn a victory over Minnesota. The win over Stanford became the biggest victory in Siena history. The glory did not end there as several Siena players earned many individual honors. Jeff Robinson was named NAC player of the year and Eastern Basketball Honorable Mention. Marc Brown was named the NAC Post season MVP and Eastern Basketball Third team. Mike Deane was named NAC Coach of the year. Co-Captains Monty Henderson and Steve McCoy had banner Senior seasons leading the Saints to the NCAA Tournament for the first time. McCoy also broke several Siena records for career rebounds, consecutive games started, and most winning games played. Monty Henderson once again finished among the nation's leaders in shot blocking. With the success of the 1988-89 season, the team is looking with anticipaiton toward the 1989-90 season. 136 - Men's Basketball Opposite Top Left: Monty slams it home, Opposite Top Right: Jeff's taking it to the hoop.
