It marks Changes. Its so objective, so easily measured, yet so subjective; so fleeting one moment, so unmercifully long in passing the next. Seniors look back to freshman year. To them it seems like yesterday that they nervously guzzled beer at Orientation and struggled through Western Civ. Freshmen look ahead to senior year and it seems to them as if the routine of resumes and job interviews will never arrive. Time. It can be a friend or a foe. Who has not been saved from answering a question on un- read reading or from delivering an unprepared report by the sound of the bell. But, the time comes when we must answer the question, give the report, graduate from freshman to sopho- more to junior to senior year. The time comes when we must say goodbye to our friends and teachers and the way of life that we have come to know here. The time comes when we must move on, make new friends, explore new ways of life, when we must laugh and love and Cher- ish our memories of the good times, the bad times, the times that will never come again. .m It a i or A . l 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 i 3 g ; '$ i 'k t! ACTIVITIES 47 Siena represents, perhaps more than anything else, the spirit of com- munity. As is true of all communities which seek constant growth and development, Siena is dependent upon the infusion of new faces and fresh spirits each September. Beginning oneis college career is no easy task. The Freshman or Transfer student may at first be confronted with feelings of confusion and anxiety as the scramble for books, room numbers, and registration begins. However, accompanying these feelings is a sense of optimism, antici- pation, determination, and newly found freedoms. The beer flows . .. the bands play . . . and new friends meet. As the days pass by, the beer may give way to books, the music may fade away, but the friendships linger on. 48 49 The Junior Class kicked off their year with a weekend camping expedition on September 19 through the 21. Fighting off the chill with blankets, beer, and a campfire, the campers sought to relish the last warm days of fall. On Sunday, September 21, the Siena community opened its' grounds to the March of Dimes for their annual Family Affair. The campus took on a carnival atmosphere, in an attempt to raise money for the orga- nization. This day reflected Sienais dedication to the larger community of the Capital District. Continuing in the same vein of service and dedica- tion to the larger community, was the outpouring of response to the Red Cross Bloodmobile on September 30. 50 The Coffee House found a new home in the Campus Center, and experienced one of it's most successful sea- sons. It was Open Night on October 16, with the entertainment focused upon Siena's own talented per- formers. On October 17 through the 19, students celebrated the season with Fall Weekend. A rowdy square dance kicked off the festivities, with plenty of cider and foot- stomping. On Sunday, the Senior Class sponsored a windy trip up Lake George on the steam ship Ticonder- oga. The National Players brought their professional pro- duction of Shakepeare's The Tempest to Siena's stage on October 20, playing to a packed house. 51 A Very Special Birthday There was one event this year that was very special to our college in particular. In October we celebrated the 600th anniversary of the birth of our patron saint, St. Bernardine of Siena. Considered the greatest preacher of his time, St. Bernadine travelled through- out ltaly spreading devotion and love to God. To honor this great Franciscan saint, we hosted a gala celebration on October 21 and 22. Highlighted was an Academic Convocation awarding honorary doctorate degrees to the distinguished Rich- ard P. Lindstrom, Wood McCahill, and Msgr. George Higgins. Oth- er events included a performance by the Capital Chamber Artists and a festive liturgy celebrated by President Hugh Hines, OFM. These special days marked a proud link with the past in such a devoted man as Saint Bernardine of Siena. - Elizabeth L. Smith - 52 53 Something for Everyone . . . Speakers of both academic and political renown visited Seina's campus. The prestigious Niebuhr Lec- ture Series continued, with Dr. Asher Finkel appear- ing earlier in September, and Dr. Walter Brueggeman on October 29. In contrast to these presentations, Bella Abzug brought her unique brand of feminism and firey opinion to Serra Hall and an enthusiastic crowd. The Black and Latin Students Union continued to offer a varied social activitiy in a Disco Night in the Campus Center. Welcome Parents! l Parent's Weekend, one of the fall's main events, took a few new twists this year. On November 7, Stage III presented a dinner the- ater performance of Celebration to rave reviews. Those who preferred a more casual atmospehre could gobble popcorn and pretzels in the ARC at the traditional Beer and Banjo night. On Saturday, Saga catered a delicious dinner and, later, two bands played in the ARC, while parents and students danced the night away. Sunday morning brought a pancake breakfast and Parent's Masses. By Sunday afternoon, the parents had come and gone .. leaving many happy memories behind. Celebration! Contemporary musical theater came to Siena on November 6 through the 8 in the Stage II production of Celebration. An upbeat and innovative perfor- mance underscored the exhilarating direction and technical precision which have become the trade- marks of this organization's work. Staged as theater- in-the-round, Celebration is the story of the unbri- dled passions of youth and the smoldering desires of saturated old age, bound together by the question of one's overall perspective on life. Running clockwise on this page are the principals of the production: Mary Sylvester and Bill Bayba as the young strangers - torn apart and yet thrown together by their conflicting ideas on Iifes' intrinsic simplicity and its' demeaning demands; Keith Miner as the personification of wealth and greed and the frustrated hungers of wasted time, ultimately finding new life in the youth of others; and Dan Blanchfield as the wordly vagabond, tying together the spirits of both characters and audience, while pointing to the only approach to life for both young and old - that of a celebration! Ad the Winter was Upon Us . . . Winter came virtually overnight to the campus on No- vember 17, dumping over a foot of snow in a little more than twenty-four hours. When students woke the follow- ing morning, classes had been canceled, and a full day of frolic in the fresh powdery flurries was assured. As the semester rolled towards December, the Seniors began their count-down with a semi-formal cocktail party on November 14, and a somewhat less elegant class party in the Rat later on. A Winter Wonderland Winter Weekend was highlighted this year by the annual Semi-Formal. A cham- pagne hour was held in the Campus Cen- ter theater, followed by a delicious dinner in the Rat. Fr. Dennis provided music to dine by, before the party moved back up- stairs to an open-bar and the powerful mu- sic of The Whizz Kidds. The Campus Center was decorated in the spirit of Christmas and winter, with the theme of the evening being a Winter Wonderland. Photographers stood by, ready to capture the special moments for those attending, while couples crowded on-to the dance floor into the wee hours of the morning. 59 Integrated. . . ' Throughout the semester, Siena has traditionally provided an array of cultural events for both the student body and the surrounding community. This year, in an educational experience designed to reinforce such cultural activity an Integrated Humanities course was offered in hopes of com- bining both academic and artistic pursuit. The Little Afternoon Music Series continued this year as well, with the duo pianists the Paratore brothers appearing on September 14, Michael Em- ery, violinist, performing on October 12, and the Baroque Trio of Basel, Switzerland featured on November 16. On October 21, the Capitol Cham- ber Artists made a concert performance in the Chapel, the last such appearance before the build- ing was damaged by fire. T'was the Season . . . The Holiday Season is often one of contradictions here at Siena. Certainly the spirit of Advent is enhanced by the strong Franciscan spirit on campus, as well as by the anticipation of the end of the semester. However, with celebrations beginning approximately one week prior to final exams, the excitement and anticipation of the Holidays is sometimes muted by a preoccupation with upcom- ing finals. Nevertheless, before the studying enters it's most intensive period, everyone is bitten by the Christmas spirit. Residence halls are often elaborately decorated, trees of every shape and decor may be seen everywhere, and parties are the order of the weekend and evening. As early Christmases are held here at Siena, a grow- ing sense of home emerges. 61 The End in Sight ... It seems to come upon us faster than any other time of year, 7 and yet it only lasts for a week. Finals Week at Siena has a personality all of it's own. Whether your entire cum is riding on a two-hour exam, or if you suspect that the professor doesn't even read the final, a certain sense of anxious preparation is bound to surface at sometime. Seemingly endless hours spent alone with one's notebook, pouring over notes that are four months old; the sensation of being but a drop in the sea of students, as you scout out just the right table in the ARC; looking up to realize that you're the last one left for three rows in any direction, as the Clock ticks away; frantically calling home or contacting friends to make arrange- ments for a ride home . . . For after Final's Week, there is hardly a thought more frightening than spending Christmas Eve in Siena Hall. 62 2w 1W ; YB E N H 119$? Whether it be on a varsity, club, or intramural level, sports involve fun as well as dedication and hard work. Meanwhile, staying active and healthy is an integral part of everyonels life. Nearly as important as the players themselves are the coaches, managers, and the fans. The latter consist of families, alumni, cheering squad, and lastly the indomitable Tee Pee Rowdies. Without the support of all these people, success would certainly have been more difficult. This section of the yearbook is devoted soley to the athletic pursuits of the Siena community. The following pages contain only a small sampling of this facet of Siena life. Unfortunately, due to a problem of photos and deadlines, several teams are missing. Hopefully, these will be included in the supplement. K . .uuuuo .V nun . 70 VOLLEYBALL Siena's volleyball team had an excellent sea- son finishing with a record of 18 wins .. 8 losses prior to entering state competition. Though a member of Division III, Siena also faces two tough Division I teams e Syracuse and Colgate. At states the women made it into the semi-finals finishing within the top ten. This brought their overall record to an impressive 20 wins - 10 losses. Coach Sue Daggett attributed the suc- cessful season to a well-balanced team and some outstanding freshmen. Prospects for next year are quite good as everyone is returning. 1980 VOLLEYBALL ROSTER Bligh, Jacqueline Gallagher, Nancy Glover, Cheryl Hayden, Fran Lambert, Theresa Lane, Sandra Lorusso, Pamela Myers, Sandra OtConnor, Denise Sahut, Renee Taplin, Aileen Vincent, Kelli 71 WOMEN'S RUGBY Women's rugby is not new to Siena, the club was formed anew last spring and has grown ever since. The sport has two seasons, one beginning in September, the other in February. In fact, a recruiting party will soon be held for the spring season. Women's rugby is fast becoming a popular sport at colleges and universities. The Siena club has an outstanding potential to become one of the better teams. According to advisor CPT Brennen, Siena has the best-looking team on the eastern seaboard. It takes more than good looks to produce a successful squad. The team is young and aggressive and showed great spirit in their game against Colgate. They also participated in the Syracuse Upstate Rugby Tournament along with teams from Cortland and Brockport. This streak brings the lady Indians to a record of 11 wins - 3 losses. A member of Division II, Siena is ranked at the top in New York State by the Lady Widmer State poll. In the Combined Division I - II Lady Widmer poll, the women are 4th be- hind St. John's University, Syracuse University, and Queenis College. Coach Joe Hogan started the season with a more difficult schedule than usual and this tac- tic helped strengthen the team. The remainder of the season looks highly promising, though with a roster of only nine, a few injuries could do a lot of damage. Coach Hogan is, however, very optimistic and with his team's record e who wouldn't be? 74 nun w n nun u nun NH n z 0 o f L to R: C. Marshall, K. Sturgis, A. Fedullo, M. Donahue, V. Aromande, C. The pre- sent record stands at 10 wins and 5 losses with 11 games remaining in the season. At home in the ARC, the Indians have won all 8 of their games. The Siena Indians are led by Co-Captain : Freddy Danials, a senior out of Albany High and 1 Co-Captain Tom Babcock, a senior out of Mah- wah High, Mahwah, New Jersey. Scoring leaders for the 80-81 season include Kevin McGraw, a junior out of CBA in Albany and Dan Terwil- liger, a junior out of Niskayuna High. Leading rebounders are Terwilliger and Vernon As- quith, a junior out of Bishop Maginn High, Alba- ny. The Indians, and ECAC, Metro Division I team are led by head coach Bill Kirsch who has been at Siena for the last eight seasons. 80 Sitting L to r - N. Kirsch, V. Asquith, L. Fedullo, T. Sise, D. On the heels of their best Division I start ever, the Indians pulled out an 80-77 first-game win over Colgate. The next night, before a vocal crowd of 3,590, they held on for a 63-61 last- second victory over Eastern Michigan to take the title. Dan Terwilliger, who collected 43 points and 21 rebounds in two nights, was chosen most valuable player for the tournament. Kevin McGraw and Vernon Asquith were selected to the AlI-Tourney team. McGraw scored 36 points in two nights including a game-high 22 against Colgate. Asquith gave Siena the strength it needed in the center. He collected two big rebounds and a blocked shot in the closing sec- onds of the Eastern Michigan contest to pre- serve the Siena win. The Siena Invitational Tournament was first played in 1977 when Oklahoma City took the championship. The following year, Virginia Military Institute was champion. In the cham- pionship games of 1979 and 1980, Siena lost to St. Francis by six and the University of North Carolina-Wilmington by four, respectively, The win was a long time coming, but it was well worth it. 84 MEN'S RUGBY The Siena Ruggers had a reasonably success- ful fall season. According to CPT Brennan, Siena has one of the better teams in the State. The club team is characterized by its enthusiasm and dedication to what is quite commonly termed elegant violence. Topping off the season was the always exciting West Point game. The 4-4 tie was especially significant in light of last year's 15-12 loss to the Army. Since Rugby is also played in the spring, the Ruggers are impatient- ly waiting for the snow to melt and are looking forward to an even better season. 86 Row1:R.Swit, E. Ashworth, J. Sullivan, T. The club team, under Co-Captains Chuck Hoyt, Tim Lange, and Frank Bice, attributed its losses to a sluggish of- fense as well as a lack of home games. The sea- son was not without its bright spots, though: Dennis Buckley set a single game rushing record when the Indians rallied against N.Y. Maritime with a score of 36-2. Team members feel that their record does not accurately represent their potential, and are looking forward to a better season next year. Row 1: M. Crotty, L. Lucarelli, D. Buckley, M Campbell, J. The club travelled to Rochester to take on St. John Fisher. There, during a tackle play, captain Frank Bice was seriously injured. He spent the remain- der of the semester in the hospital. Though Frank was far away, Siena thought about him a great deal. As president of the class of '81, Frank was well known among the mem- bers of the Siena community. In an attempt to defray his medical expenses, his roommates helped initiate a series of fund-raising efforts. Soon, many tri-city high schools and organiza- tions began fund-raisers of their own. A great deal was raised and we only wish that it could have been more. WOMEN'S SOCCER The women's soccer club played several varsity teams this season as well as other club teams. Siena Sting, as the team is nicknamed, managed a 6-6 record for their second season of play, but the numbers do no present an accurate picture of the quality of play. As a club, the soccer team serves mainly as a source of enjoyment for its members, while varsity teams are much more structured and competitive. Everyone remained enthusiastic despite several injuires early in the season. Due to these mishaps, several players had to fill previously unfamiliar positions. With the help of Coach Charles Curto and the encouragement of Captain Karen Bulich, the women adjusted to their new positions well. Among the schools played were Manhattanville, Vassar, and Albany State. The club is losing only four of its thirty members to graduation so that the prospects for next season are bright. Row 1: C. They began by defeating Clarkson and RPI in a double dual meet. From there, they went on to win the next three dual meets for a record of 4 wins and 0 losses. Their invitational record is equally impressive. They captured the titles from the LeMoyne, Marist, and Albany State Invitationals, as well as the Capital District Invitational, defeating Albany State, Union, and RPI for the second consecutive year. The team's greatest achievement came in early November when the Indians returned from western New York, the victors of the New York State Cross Country Championship Meet, defeating Fredonia, last year's champs, by 2 points. Senior Tom Dalton remained undefeated in team meets for his third consecutive year. 92 1980 X-C ROSTER Name , Class , Allen, Pat 1 , '83 'X'Buckley, Chris ' '83 8 By , Doug, q '83W ;-, 'Cantwel'l, Dan? 1 '83 Castle, Paul - , : '81 ' Coughlin, Ricrh -r '82 Dalton, Tom - , - '81 r- Dean, Jim, ' ' 8 '83 lmoreg ' - y '83 ' JTD'nglas,-,Bi ' '83 Failbo, Vinceo , V '82 Ferguson, Scott '82 Gallo, Larry ' ' '83 George, Guy '81 Nagle, Brian; '83 Reilly, Bob 3 ; 8 . Despite their losing season, there was much more depth and experience on the team this year than there has ever been before. The team was also a very balanced one; everyone contributed to the team's play. The team was composed of sixteen players who were trained and coordinated by coach Joyce Bergman. The co-captains chosen by team members because of their leadership abili- ty and overall knowledge of the game were, June Gibbons, defensive sweeper and lone sen- ior on the team, and Jane Buratto, the team's leading scorer. The total goals scored by the offense this season was twenty, which is, coinci- dentaliy, the same number of goals which were scored against the team. The majority of the games were very close in score; in fact, the team was never defeated by more than two goals. The ultimate responsibility for prevention of a goal was the task of Fran Pellerito. The team has grown since its initiation as a varsity sport three years ago. The number of women on the team and the number of games played during the season has increased steadily each year. This year the team even hosted its own Invitational Tournament in which it re- ceived the second place trophy. The loss of only one senior enables the possible return of fifteen experienced players who have worked together as a team before which gives an indication of the winning potential of next year's team. Their only win came against Bard College while the tie game was played against Potsdam State. This young team, among whose thirty-one members more than half were freshmen 0r sophomores, was coached by James Djernes. Top scorer for the season Rob McKearney tallied 5 goals while players Tony Spina, Brian Ronan, and Mike Ozian performed well. Team work rated high on the list of this years priori- ties, and with a large number of returning play- ers, the men's soccer team looks forward to next season with determination. Bedard and C. Price, rounded out its fall season with a very satisfying overall record of 17 wins and 7 losses. A number of these games were won by a comfortable margin. The individual records are equally satisfying. R. Thompson finished the season with a batting average of .366, K. Hayner with .390, and J. Mar- tin with .400. C. Sohl tallied 3 home runs: Thompson and Hayner each had 2. Smith led the team with 163 put outs; Hayner contributed 54 assists. For the pitchers, M. LeRoy and T. Shepardson led with earned run averages of 1.94 and 1.69, respectively. The team is well set for its spring season. Row 1: T. Bedard, C. Smith; Row 2: C. Ott, K. Clemens, J. Howard, T. Shepardson, T.
